Arsenal now set to rival Liverpool for signing of £35m star who Rice loves

Arsenal are now expected to rival Liverpool for the signature of an “elite” player, who Declan Rice is a big fan of.

Gunners lay down marker with victory against Nottingham Forest

The Gunners suffered an early setback in the Premier League title race at Anfield before the international break, with Liverpool emerging as 1-0 victors, but they got right back on track against Nottingham Forest at the Emirates Stadium.

A Martin Zubimendi brace either side of Viktor Gyokeres’ third goal of the season ensured the north Londoners picked up all three points, sending Mikel Arteta’s side back to the top of the Premier League table.

As expected, Arteta’s side have looked particularly impressive from a defensive point of view up to this point, with Dominik Szoboszlai’s arguably unstoppable free-kick the only goal they have conceded in the opening four games.

Arsenal intensify interest in signing "special" gem ahead of Liverpool

He’s a future star…

However, there has now been a suggestion that Arteta remains keen on strengthening his backline even further, with a report from The Boot Room revealing Arsenal are now expected to rival Liverpool for the signature of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Arne Slot’s side are still the favourites to sign Guehi, despite missing out on a £35m deal during the summer transfer window, but there could now be stiff competition for the centre-back’s signature, with a whole host of Europe’s top clubs, including Chelsea, also keen.

Transfer expert Graeme Bailey adds: “He is a fantastic person and everyone who meets him relays that fact – I was told by one high ranking Premier League executive that signing him is one of the ‘least risky’ transfers that anyone could do.

"Elite" Guehi would provide incredible depth for Arteta

Arteta is already blessed with a number of top-quality options at centre-back, with William Saliba and Gabriel forming a formidable partnership, which led to the Gunners boasting the best defensive record in the Premier League last season.

Having also signed Cristhian Mosquera in the summer transfer window, there are doubts over whether signing another defender is necessary, but the Crystal Palace star clearly has the ability to be a success at the Emirates Stadium.

Lauded as an “elite” centre-back by writer Eddie Gibbs, the 25-year-old is now an established England international, picking up 25 caps, with Statman Dave recently singing him out for praise for his performance in the 5-0 victory against Serbia.

The Englishman, who Rice is a big fan of, scored his first goal for the Three Lions in the thrashing, while he has also made a flying start to the season at club level, particularly impressing in a 3-0 victory against Aston Villa.

That said, it could be very difficult for Guehi to displace Saliba or Gabriel in the starting XI, so a move to Anfield could make more sense, especially if Ibrahima Konate doesn’t sign a new contract.

'Love the atmosphere' – Colombia fans bring carnival energy, transform a dreary draw with Canada into a raucous football fiesta

Canada and Colombia played to a scoreless draw at Sports Illustrated Stadium, but on a weeknight in New Jersey, the score wasn't the point

HARRISON, N.J. – You could hear Sports Illustrated Stadium before you could see it. There were noisemakers, horns blaring, cacophonous sounds all around the train stop near the venue.

And then, you could smell it. Dozens of barbecues fired up simultaneously, all providing varieties of grilled meat. Every South American country has its own pre-match "asado." For Colombian fans, here, it was pinchos, skewers sold on the cheap to the thousands of fans that walked past heading to watch a soccer game.

The stadium itself was no less appealing, a sea of yellow, pulsing with the thud of feet on metal floors, and shifting as the wave went around the bowl every so often. It all made for a lovely occasion, Colombia playing de facto host as they faced off against Canada Tuesday night in what felt like far more than an international friendly to break up the grind of the European season.

The drab 0-0 final score, in truth, mattered little.

There are times when the United States' soccer credentials can be called into question. And rightly so. But here, on a brisk weeknight, some 30 minutes from the beating heart of Manhattan by rickety train, in an MLS stadium, there could be no queries. New Jersey, for a few hours, seemed something like Bogota on the rowdiest of weekend nights.

Tom Hindle Horns, beer and grilled meat

It all started some two hours before kick off. The 100-yard saunter from the train station to the stadium, which gradually reveals itself with every step, was littered with stalls and salespeople. Counterfeit kits were everywhere, priced to go. Business, for the most part, seemed pretty good.

Everything was layered with yellow, blue and red. Cars had flags spray-painted onto them. Banners flew every few paces or so. Every single gazebo, tent and canopy acknowledged that, in some way, this was Colombia's patch for the night.

Yet there was a convivial vibe to it all. Parents partying with friends, their kids kicking balls around in front of the parked car. One boy, clad entirely in Colombia gear, nutmegged his brother over and over again, taunting him as he did so.

Multiple generations made their way to the ground. There were fathers and sons, mothers and daughters and grandparents. This was, for all of its rowdiness, a friendly zone. We are told, so often, that soccer is a sport of the youth in the U.S.. This place made it feel welcomingly old.

Not that it made things any quieter. As the support was funneled towards the stadium, the volume only increased. A few children wore protective headphones as they marched with their families. Empty drinks cans were tossed into bins. One stumbling fan remarked in Spanglish that he might just "need another f*cking beer, hombre," as he dragged his way towards the entrance.

AdvertisementGetty'I'm gonna be raising my flag'

Of course, there was an game against opponents to be played. Canada seemingly didn't send an official fan group to New Jersey for the friendly. The stadium was dotted with tiny pockets of red here and there. But what fans did show up made good account of themselves.

A few traveled from Toronto.

"It's New York. Not a bad excuse for a vacation," one fan, wearing a Jonathan David Juventus kit, told GOAL.

Some locals were about too, and they promised to make some noise.

"I'm gonna be making noise near the corner flag. I'm gonna be raising my flag. I love the atmosphere," another fan said.

Jesse Marsch's team weren't so bad, either. may have lost to Australia four days before, but they are an otherwise transformed side under the American manager, who insisted prior to the fixture that his team had a point to prove against an opponent that was playing in a Copa America final 15 months ago – especially as the 2026 World Cup draws near.

"The point is that this is a different Canada, right?" Marsch said ahead of Tuesday's game. "This is a talented Canada. This is a team that doesn’t fear anyone right now. We still have to maintain, internally, real hunger and a drive to continue to improve and be our best."

They played like it in the early goings. Colombia pressure was inevitable, and the sheer noise of the bowl made the opening few minutes awkward. Yet Canada weathered it all the same. Colombia didn't get a shot off in the first half. And even if Canada didn't test Alvaro Montero for 25, there was a real mettle to their showing among a raucous, frenetic start.

Getty'I've never felt such a visitor'

Still, Colombia were always a threat. Luis Diaz, now of Bayern Munich, is their star man and captain, and the fans knew it. The stadium erupted every time the winger touched the ball. The concept of "anticipation" doesn't really have a noise. Colombia fans somehow breathed it life.

When he flamboyantly cushioned a 50-yard pass with his weaker foot, the stands purred. When he nutmegged a helpless fullback, there were screams.

"I've coached in this stadium a lot. I've never felt such a visitor as today, tonight – we expected that," Marsch said after full time.

And there were constant reminders throughout the evening that this was their night. Every Colombian call was contested. Every Canadian foul was protested. Half time continued their grip on the occasion.

DJ Pope, a highly-regarded Reggaeton producer and artist, popped up for 10 minutes of agreeable noise that fans seemed vaguely interested in – in stark contrast to the standard ambivalence of American fans in these kinds of things. There was singing and dancing. The sea of yellow filled in at the right bits, when the mic was pointed. They jumped when asked. The thuds had just about subsided when the second half kicked off.

Diaz really should have scored to open the period. All of the right pieces were there: the twist, the pass, the dart, the perfect ball, right into his path. But he poked wide, rolled onto the grass, and slammed the ground in frustration. It was his last act before being substituted from the action. The loudest noise of the night came from the sarcastic jeers after Canada had a goal ruled out.

Tom HindleNot about the result

Marsch's men grew into the game as the minutes wore on. Colombia rotated, and turned to some of their reserves. March responded by introducing a series of rising talents – not least the excellent Jacob Shaffelburg, who offered real pace and verve on the wing.

Both sides traded chances, and the game that had simmered started to bubble with life. Colombia's Felipe Roman dragged wide in stoppage time, blowing the best chance of the evening in the final minutes of the fixture.

A scoreless draw seemed fair, in the end. Neither side had quite done enough. Diaz had his half-chances. Marsch couldn't quite draw a clinical moment out of an attack that still looks a little hesitant in the absence of Alphonso Davies – who is still recovering from an ACL tear. Marsch spoke of strong individual performances after the game, and they will certainly take plenty of heart from this.

The soccer, then, reinforced where both sides are. Canada are an improving outfit, the most complete side in CONCACAF, but still missing a final piece that will see them crack into the elite. Colombia can threaten in numerous ways, but they, too, are a finishing touch away from being genuine contenders next year, where they could find themselves playing near this stadium again in the World Cup.

The perfect, lasting moment came in the dying embers of stoppage time. Colombia won a corner kick. Their fans rocked, pounded and shook the stadium. The anticipation rose. Centerbacks lumbered up into the box. All the pieces were in place. But the ball was overhit, and careened out of bounds.

Still, the noise remained. And even as the two teams marched off after what will go down as a drab draw, the noise echoed around a stadium that had little apparent clue that the whistle had blown. That sound, and the smells, will remain in the memory far longer than the scoreline.

-Red Bull Bragantino:

Cameron Green continues prolific run as Gloucestershire spring declaration surprise

Australian scores third hundred in five matches as Bancroft declares in arrears in bid to liven contest

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay25-May-2025Northamptonshire 469 (Zaib 159, Sales 81, Harrison 63) and 158 for 4 (Sales 49*) lead Gloucestershire 379 for 8 dec (Green 118*, Bancroft 60, Hammond 51, Harrison 4-94) by 248 runsAustralian international Cameron Green warmed up for the World Test Championship final with a superb unbeaten 118 to set up a bold Gloucestershire declaration against Northamptonshire on day three of this Rothesay County Championship match at Wantage Road. This was Green’s third century in a five-game stint for Gloucestershire as he returns after an eight-month lay-off following back surgery. After a scratchy start, the Western Australian all-rounder played beautifully, facing 185 balls and striking three sixes and eight fours and looked in excellent touch ahead of next month’s Test final at Lord’s. After eight knocks for Gloucestershire, he currently has an average of 73.67 with power to add in the second innings.Green’s innings helped take the visitors from a precarious overnight 156 for four to 379 for eight when opposition skipper Cameron Bancroft called time with Gloucestershire still 90 runs behind, leg-spinner Calvin Harrison finishing with figures of four for 94.In their second innings, James Sales hit his followed his first-innings 81 with an unbeaten 49 as Northamptonshire closed on 158 for four, leading by 248 to set up a fascinating final day.Earlier, after a brief rain delay, nightwatcher Matt Taylor (36) and Green both edged past the slips, while Harry Conway found plenty of movement back into the right handers and had two big lbw shouts turned down against fellow Australian Green.Runs soon started to flow though, the pair extending their partnership to 61. Taylor pulled Liam Guthrie behind square for six and targeted Harrison, smashing consecutive boundaries including a big hit over midwicket. He perished attempting a similar shot, Harrison running across to take the catch off a top edge.Northamptonshire quickly struck again when Luke Procter jagged one back into James Bracey, squaring him up as he edged low to Harrison at second slip.If Green was not timing the ball perfectly, he seemed content to occupy the crease and reduce the deficit, although he showed one moment of aggression when he pulled a Gus Miller short ball over forward square-leg for six.He found a willing partner in Graeme van Buuren (27), the pair posting a stand of 79 after lunch. By now Green was moving up through the gears, driving Guthrie down the ground for back-to-back boundaries to reach his half-century off 103 balls. He had a reprieve later in the same over when Guthrie shelled a return catch and was forced to leave the field as his knee landed on the ball in his follow through. Looking much more fluent, Green beautifully timed a clip off his legs square for four.At the other end, Conway had a close lbw shout turned down against van Buuren but persuaded the umpire to raise his finger when one kept low and struck him in front.Green greeted Guthrie’s return from the treatment table by swatting him for six over the old bowls pavilion. With the follow on saved, Green then played Harrison through the off-side to reach three figures.Gloucestershire lost an eighth wicket when Tom Price chopped onto his stumps against Harrison, but Green finished the afternoon session in style, depositing Saif Zaib over long-on on the stroke of tea at which point Bancroft declared, Zaman Akhter finishing unbeaten on 22.In reply Northamptonshire targeted quick runs but lost Procter early lbw, attempting to sweep Ollie Price.Ricardo Vasconcelos (27) started in brisk fashion swatting Tom Price over deep square into the neighbouring Wellingborough Road gardens for six and clubbing four boundaries before he was adjudged to have gloved an Akhter short ball to the keeper. Miller was next to go, lbw to Akhter.Debutant Aadi Sharma (24) dismissively pulled Akhter for six to get off the mark before taking consecutive boundaries off Archie Bailey, who finally claimed his wicket via an edge to slip.Sales started aggressively, cutting fiercely for four before Green put down a regulation slip catch off the bowling of Akhter. He moved into the forties shortly before the close by pulling Ollie Price through midwicket, finishing the day one away from a second half-century of the match. Sales resumed his big first innings partnership with Saif Zaib (22 not out), who also find runs all around the ground, the pair adding 58 for the fifth wicket.

John Turner, Toby Albert ease Hampshire to third win from three

Defending champions shot out for 119 to continue winless start to 2025 season

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay06-Jun-2025

John Turner claimed 3 for 28 as Gloucestershire crumbled•Dave Vokes/Hampshire Cricket

John Turner led an outstanding Hampshire Hawks bowling performance to set up a third straight victory to start their Men’s Vitality Blast campaign.Turner picked up three wickets before Chris Wood, Scott Currie and Benny Howell all snaffled two at under five runs an over to hold defending champions Gloucestershire to 119. Opener Toby Albert, on the back of 54 and 28 not out, dominated the chase with a personal best 73 as Hawks strode to the winning line with 30 balls to spare. Not since 2017 have Hampshire won their first three matches in a Blast season, while Gloucestershire have still never won a T20 match at Utilita Bowl.On the same pitch which produced over 700 runs in the double-header last week, Gloucestershire chose to set a target but never got to grips with the conditions. Plays and misses were more regular than seeing the ball come off the middle of the bat, especially in the powerplay – which returned just 37 runs and saw Turner dismiss Miles Hammond and Cam Bancroft, the latter to a stunning catch at short fine by James Fuller.Ollie Price was the only batter to pass 20, albeit scratchily, as the allrounder struggled to find anyone to form a partnership in his 42.For the visitor’s batting woes, the Hawks were sublime with the ball. They allowed just nine fours and a single six in the entire innings and applied constant pressure.Turner added one to his powerplay tally to return 3 for 28, Currie was unhittable for a second night in a row for his 2 for 19, while wily duo Wood and Howell were also cheap for their two scalps. The fielding was also exemplary. All 10 wickets were caught; four by Howell in the covers, which was Hampshire’s joint highest in the Blast.Chasing 119, Albert scooped Ajeet Singh Dale over the ropes in the second over. He copied and pasted the shot in the fifth over as Hawks found more successful ways to get out of moments of slow scoring. The second of the sixes came in a 20-run over, which eliminated any nerves in the chase.Albert had a third six split over the ropes on 29 before also being put down at mid-off next ball. But Jack Taylor didn’t make the same mistake when he held on to James Vince at extra cover.Tom Prest didn’t make the most of getting a life dropped at extra cover, hammering the ball to deep square. But Albert refused to allow things to wobble controllably. He reached his fifth T20 half-century with his fourth maximum, and even though Joe Weatherley edged behind, Albert strode past his previous T20 high of 66.There was still time for a huge Dewald Brevis six before Albert closed the game out with a pulled four.

Martin must drop Aasgaard to start "powerful" star in new Rangers formation

Glasgow Rangers return to action in the Europa League this evening as they travel away from Ibrox for their second match of the league phase.

The Light Blues were beaten 1-0 last week at Ibrox, in a game that could have ended by a greater margin of defeat, but they did win in their last Scottish Premiership game.

Russell Martin’s side beat Livingston 2-1 away from home in the league on Sunday, thanks to a stoppage-time winner from substitute Max Aarons.

One of the players who should be dropped from the starting line-up that featured on Sunday is attacking midfielder Thelo Aasgaard, who did not do enough to warrant keeping his place.

Why Rangers should drop Thelo Aasgaard

The Norway international was signed on a permanent deal from Luton Town in the summer transfer window to provide an attacking threat from the middle of the park.

So far, though, the 23-year-old whiz has failed to deliver a single goal or assist in seven matches in all competitions, per Sofascore, which shows that he has offered very little at the top end of the pitch.

Aasgaard did not create a single chance, register any shots on target, or complete any dribbles in 73 minutes on the pitch against Livingston on Sunday, per Sofascore, which is why Martin should ruthlessly ditch him from the XI for tonight’s trip to Sturm Graz.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

For several reasons, including Aasgaard’s disappointing performances and Mohamed Diomande’s suspension, Martin should trial a new 4-4-2 formation by unleashing Youssef Chermiti over the Norwegian talent.

Why Martin should change his Rangers formation

Rangers have lost their last four European matches this season by an aggregate score of 12-2, which shows that what they have been doing on the European stage has not been good enough.

One issue that the Gers have had in their last two games, in particular, is that their centre-forward has looked isolated and too easily marked out of the game. It was an issue for Chermiti against Genk and for Bojan Miovski against Livingston.

As you can see in the table above, both strikers were dominated on the ground and in the air in those matches, winning one foul and taking two shots in 170 minutes between them.

This is why Martin should switch to a 4-4-2 from the regular 4-3-3 for this clash with Sturm Graz to get Miovski and the summer signing from Everton in the team to occupy the opposition’s defenders, hopefully increasing their chances of winning duels and retaining possession for the away side.

Chermiti, who was described as “powerful” by writer Kai Watson, has not scored a competitive goal since he left Sporting to join Everton in the summer of 2023, which suggests that he is not a striker who is full of confidence at the moment.

Therefore, playing him alongside a more experienced and proven goalscorer like Miovski could make a lot of sense to take some of the pressure off his shoulders, both in terms of duels and mentally.

The Macedonia international proved that he can score goals on a regular basis during his time with Aberdeen, as shown in the graphic above, and playing him alongside another forward could help to get him back to his best.

Rangers have simply not been good enough in Europe this season, as evidenced by their results in their last four games, and that is why Martin should get creative and test out a new formation in this evening’s game.

Outshining Antman: Rangers loanee is attracting "major European interest"

Rangers may regret letting go of this star who is currently outperforming Oliver Antman.

Given how poor the performances have been in Europe and how badly their strikers have fared individually, pairing Miovski and Chermiti could be an interesting and effective solution to their problems in and out of possession.

Martin has Rangers "Boy Wonder" who could be the next Ryan Kent

Glasgow Rangers have endured a horrendous start to the 2025/26 campaign, failing to win any of their first five matches in the Scottish Premiership.

The Light Blues were also knocked out of the Champions League by a 9-1 defeat to Club Brugge on aggregate, which has left Russell Martin under plenty of pressure early on in his Ibrox career.

There have been some positives to take away from the first couple of months of the campaign, though, including the signing of winger Djeidi Gassama from Sheffield Wednesday.

The French forward arrived from the EFL Championship side for a fee of £2.2m, and he has proven to be an instant success on the flank at Ibrox.

Gassama has produced four goals and one assist in 12 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish giants to date, including four goals in six Champions League qualifiers.

The 22-year-old star is yet to get off the mark in the Premiership, though, which means that the Gers are still looking for their next Ryan Kent at Ibrox.

Why Rangers need to find their next Ryan Kent

The last time that the Light Blues lifted the Scottish Premiership title was with Steven Gerrard in the dugout in the 2020/21 campaign, and Kent was an influential part of that side.

Signed from Liverpool, the English winger emerged as a key player for Rangers for many years on the left wing, providing goals and assists on a fairly regular basis for the most part.

His contributions to the last Premiership title the club won were particularly eye-catching, though, as the forward delivered an outstanding number of goals and assists for his side.

As you can see in the table above, Kent was one of the most productive wingers in the Premiership at scoring goals, creating goals, dribbling past opposition players, and getting touches in the opposition’s box.

These statistics show that Gerrard was able to rely on the ex-Liverpool attacker to deliver consistent quality in the final third, without being a one-dimensional threat, because he could go down the outside to provide assists or cut inside to score goals.

Kent then went on to finish his career at Rangers with a return of 33 goals and 56 assists in 218 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, which shows that he also had longevity at Ibrox.

The Light Blues have won one trophy, the League Cup under Philippe Clement in 2023, in the two full seasons since the club released him in the summer of 2023, illustrating how much they have missed his wizardry on the left flank.

Now, though, Martin may have his own version of Kent already at the club and waiting for his chance to really break through, and it is not Gassama.

Whilst the French star has shown flashes in the Champions League, his failure to provide any goals in five appearances in the Premiership so far is a bit of a concern.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast’s In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

Meanwhile, Rangers have a teenage sensation who has scored a goal in the league this season and has the potential to develop into the club’s next Kent, and his name is Findlay Curtis.

Why Findlay Curtis could be the next Ryan Kent for Rangers

Martin must provide the 18-year-old left-sided attacker with more opportunities to shine at Ibrox in the coming weeks and months because the youngster has shown enough in his limited minutes to suggest that he has serious potential.

Curtis showed great promise during his brief time with the B team. He delivered four goals and three assists in eight appearances at that level before making the step up to the first-team, per Transfermarkt.

Those numbers for the B team were Kent-esque, as he provided quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals from the left flank, and he has shown flashes of translating that output over to the senior side.

“The Boy Wonder”, as described by Premier Sports, scored his first goal for the first-team in a Champions League qualifying clash with Panathinaikos, and the run and strike was one that Kent would have been proud of.

Unfortunately, though, the 18-year-old star has not been given a consistent run of matches to showcase his quality on the pitch on the left flank for the Gers since that fantastic goal in the first match of the season.

As you can see in the table above, the two games against the Greek side are the only two matches in which he has played more than 45 minutes. They are also the only two outings that he started.

Curtis has scored one goal in 35 minutes of action in the Premiership, netting a crucial equaliser away at St Mirren, as he has only been rewarded with three short cameos off the bench by Martin.

Considering that Rangers have failed to win any of their five Premiership games and that they have failed to score in three of their last four games, it seems bizarre that the youngster has not been afforded more of an opportunity to shine.

The teenage star’s form at B team and first-team level suggests that he has the potential to be a Ryan Kent-esque figure on the left flank, scoring and assisting goals on a regular basis.

Rangers must rue losing their own homegrown Bukayo Saka for £0

Rangers lost a talented young player this summer and he is already being compared to Bukayo Saka.

This is why Martin must bring Curtis into the starting XI in the upcoming matches to see if he can deliver consistent quality as a regular starter, given that he has already scored three goals in just 221 minutes of football, per Sofascore, this season.

He's going nowhere! Koln boss dismisses hype surrounding 'very promising' Said El Mala amid Bayern Munich and Man City links

Koln sporting director Thomas Kessler has moved to calm the hype surrounding rising star Said El Mala, following reports of interest from Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and several Premier League clubs. El Mala has committed his future to Koln by signing a contract until 2030 and the director insists he will not be sold any time soon by the Bundesliga side.

Interest for Mala from different parts of Europe

El Mala has been strongly linked with a move to Bayern, with head scout Nils Schmadtke reportedly informing Koln of the Bavarians' interest in the winger. However, Koln are said to have taken a firm stance on the matter, making it clear that they will not accept an offer below their club-record sale of €50 million (£44m/$58m). Earlier in the summer, Premier League side Brighton reportedly submitted a €20m (£17m/$23m) bid, which was rejected by Koln. Chelsea are also said to be monitoring the player’s situation, while Bayern’s domestic rivals Borussia Dortmund are expected to rival them for El Mala’s signature, with Bayern currently considered the frontrunners.

In an interview with , Koln sporting director Kessler explained that the club extended El Mala’s contract in the summer until 2030 after successful negotiations.

“We had a long meeting with him and his representatives in the summer and extended his contract, which runs until 2029, by another year until 2030," he said. “With this, we have made a clear statement that we see our future with him and are very happy that Said is with us.”

He added: "His first appearances were very promising. However, it shouldn't be forgotten that the match against Dortmund at the weekend was only his second start in the Bundesliga. Expectations in Cologne can be immense, also due to the media environment."

El Mala earns Kompany praise and eyes Podolski's number

El Mala joined Koln from Viktoria Koln and spent the entire 2024–25 season out on loan before breaking into the first team. In his debut Bundesliga season, El Mala has played a key role in Koln’s strong start to the 2025–26 campaign, scoring three goals and providing one assist to help the club rise to sixth in the table.

El Mala’s quick feet, decision-making, and ability to drive play through midfield have not only earned him praise in Germany but also attracted attention from Europe’s top clubs. Despite his tall frame, his acceleration and agility allow him to change direction rapidly, making him a difficult opponent for defenders, particularly in one-on-one situations. Operating on the right side of Lukas Kwasniok’s 3-4-3 system, El Mala often drifts inside to find space between the lines while allowing wingback Jakub Kaminski to make overlapping runs to deliver crosses. His movement, timing, and technical skill make him a key figure in Koln’s attack. During counterattacks, he uses his blistering pace to run behind defenders and exploit open spaces.

El Mala’s rapid rise has drawn comparisons to German legend Lukas Podolski, and the youngster is reportedly eyeing the latter's iconic number 10 shirt, which has remained vacant since 2012. His versatility also earned praise from Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany, who says he admires the winger’s dynamic style but urged caution given his limited experience.

As for El Mala, he will aim to gain as much experience as possible this season before evaluating his options at the end of the campaign.

Newcastle now want to beat Liverpool to "unique" ace as fresh discount emerges

Eyeing some revenge on Liverpool after the Alexander Isak saga in the summer, Newcastle United now reportedly want to beat the Reds to one impressive defender in 2026.

Newcastle transfer targets heading into January window

Newcastle have some unfinished business in the transfer market. They were forced to rush through late business in the summer after facing several rejections from their top targets and then losing Isak. In the end, they had to settle for Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa, having initially targeted the likes of Hugo Ekitike and Joao Pedro.

So far, however, it seems as though they saved their best option for last. Woltemade has been a revelation. The German has scored three goals in four Premier League games and is proven to be worth every penny that Newcastle paid out to make him their record signing.

Aside from Woltemade, though, there’s work to be done in Eddie Howe’s side. Only Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers have scored less goals than the Magpies, with their new signing scoring half of their six Premier League goals. That’s something that they simply must solve.

The return of Wissa and his long-awaited debut next month should go a long way, but when AFCON arrives, Newcastle are likely to be without their summer arrival once again. And that’s when PIF could turn back towards the transfer market.

Rumours have already suggested that their interest in Alexander Sorloth could be reignited this winter, as he seeks a starting place away from Atletico Madrid. The former Crystal Palace forward is certainly the type of player that would turn a blunt attack sharp in January.

Meanwhile, away from what should be their top priority, the Magpies have also reportedly set their sights on some Liverpool revenge.

Newcastle now eyeing Lukeba move

As reported by Caught Offside, PIF and Newcastle have now set their sights on signing Castello Lukeba from RB Leipzig. The impressive central defender is already wanted by Liverpool, but the Magpies could finally take some revenge on those at Anfield by stealing a player they may see as a replacement for Ibrahima Konate.

What should also be music to Newcastle’s ears is Lukeba’s fresh discount. Although the Frenchman has a release clause worth as much as €90m (£78m), reports are now suggesting that Leipzig would accept closer to €60m (£52m) to sell their defender in the summer.

That would be a bargain deal for a player of both his quality and potential. At just 22 years old, Lukeba has earned praise from across the Bundesliga and from the likes of analyst Ben Mattinson, who praised his “unique” profile.

In an ageing backline, Lukeba would provide Newcastle with the perfect partner for Malick Thiaw in a duo that would dominate St James’ Park for years to come.
