Tottenham plan January talks for £160k-a-week Man City star after Frank request

Tottenham added much-needed quality to their squad in certain areas, but there are a few key targets that Spurs’ recruitment team missed out on.

Lilywhites boss Thomas Frank was backed by the arrivals of Kevin Danso, Mathys Tel, Kota Takai, Mohammed Kudus, Joao Palhinha, Xavi Simons and Randal Kolo Muani before Monday’s 7pm deadline, but partly due to complications with their locally trained quota, some were forced to miss out on their 22-man Champions League squad for the league phase.

Both Tel and Takai won’t be playing Champions League football for Spurs this season, at least until they’re allowed to amend their selections past the league phase, if Frank’s side do indeed make it that far.

Nevertheless, whilst Tel and Takai will feel hard done by as absentees from Europe, both men are likely to play a key role in the Premier League.

A high-ranking recruitment team of chairman Daniel Levy — who’s now resigned after a shock announcement — CEO Vinai Vinkatesham, technical director Johan Lange and unofficial advisor Fabio Paratici eventually managed to navigate what was a notoriously tricky window, with plenty of bumps along the way.

Tottenham were involved in two of the most dramatic transfer soap operas of the summer, and ultimately felt a devastating effect from both of them.

Morgan Gibbs-White was on the verge of joining Spurs for around £60 million before Nottingham Forest blocked the deal, threatened legal action and convinced the 25-year-old to sign a club-record contract – humiliating Levy in the process – while Arsenal sensationally hijacked their rivals for Eberechi Eze at the eleventh hour in very public fashion.

Eventually, Frank got his hands on a much-needed playmaker to replace the injured James Maddison by signing Simons from RB Leipzig for £52 million – mounting a hijack of their own on Chelsea and restoring some pride.

In the final hours of the window, Tottenham also sealed an “un-Spurs-like” straight loan deal for PSG striker Randal Kolo Muani, perhaps in reaction to Dominic Solanke’s latest injury, but it is worth nothing that the Frenchman can also play out wide.

In terms of their other transfer pursuits, Spurs were targeting a left-winger and centre-back in the final weeks of the window (Sky Sports), but to no avail.

Manuel Akanji, before his move from Man City to Inter Milan, and Brentford captain Nathan Collins were among the names linked with moves to N17 before the deadline, but neither came through the door.

Nathan Collins in action for Brentford

The same can be said for Akanji’s former teammate, Nathan Ake.

Tottenham plan Nathan Ake talks in January after Thomas Frank request

Tottenham reportedly held discussions over a late summer swoop for Ake, but the £160,000-per-week centre-back ultimately stayed at Eastlands despite his struggle for game time ahead of Rayan Ait-Nouri and Josko Gvardiol.

Manchester City's Nathan Ake

Now, as per CaughtOffside, it is believed that Spurs are planning to reopen talks for Ake in January, as Frank wants to add more experience to his squad.

Their interest in the Netherlands international stems from wanting an alternative to Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie on the left, with Ake versatile enough and capable of playing both roles.

City value Ake at a minimum £15 million with just two years left on his contract, which could be seen as great value for a prestigious player who Virgil van Dijk called “underrated”.

Ake also played an under the radar role in helping the Sky Blues win their historic 2023 treble, with Pep Guardiola calling him a “proper defender”.

Ponting: Shreyas 'understands game situations better than ever before'

“He’s a lot more confident in himself now than he was, and that comes with experience,” says Ricky Ponting of Shreyas Iyer

Jaffer: Shreyas is currently India’s best six-hitter

Punjab Kings (PBKS) coach Ricky Ponting is impressed with Shreyas Iyer’s evolution as a captain, saying that he is responding to pressure better after having led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to the IPL title last season.Ponting has seen that evolution from close quarters, having also worked with Iyer during his stint at Delhi Capitals (DC). Iyer and Ponting had led DC to the playoffs from 2019 to 2021, and even the final in 2020. Their reunion as captain and coach at PBKS has turned out to be sweet so far, with the team well-placed for a playoffs spot at the moment.”He’s a lot more confident in himself now than he was, and that comes with experience,” Ponting said in his post-match press conference after PBKS defeated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Chepauk. “I mean, he won the IPL last year as a captain, so when you’ve done that and you’ve got that experience behind you and you believe and trust in your own instincts, I think that’s the biggest thing with captaincy, especially in a T20 game when everything around you is happening so fast.Related

Hat-trickster Chahal is still making batters look silly

Stats – Chahal's second IPL hat-trick extends CSK's woes at home

“You know, fours and sixes are flying everywhere. His ability to stay calm on the field, although he might not have been that calm tonight when we were a couple of overs late getting through the overs, but just his maturity, I think, and that experience.”That maturity shone through when he matched his premier spinner, Yuzvendra Chahal, up with MS Dhoni – who continues to struggle against this variety of bowling – despite the presence of spin-hitter Shivam Dube at the other end. After having Dhoni hole out for 11 off four balls, Chahal went onto bag a hat-trick in that 19th over of CSK’s innings to spin the game PBKS’ way.Iyer then helmed PBKS’ chase with 72 off 41 balls, hitting five fours and four sixes. He was on 28 off 23 balls at one point but turned up the tempo to bring up his fifty off just 32 balls.”He’s a more mature player now, I think he understands the game and game situations probably better than ever before, and I think that was showcased there tonight, to be able to play the way that he did,” Ponting said of Iyer. “You know, he’ll be disappointed with himself that he didn’t hit the winning runs, he didn’t get his team across the line, because I know how much he prides himself on being the man that’s there at the end to win games. But look, I love working with him, he talks with all the players, all the players love working with him.”The way he communicates with them, whether it’s during the game or at practice or back at the team hotel… we’ve managed to create a really good environment that everybody seems to be really happy in and the boys are playing some good cricket in. So, all in all, it was another good performance from us tonight.”2:33

Breaking down PBKS’ choice of bowlers against CSK

Not too long ago, Iyer was vulnerable to fast bowlers targeting him with short balls. In this IPL, he’s found a way to put those bowlers away, thanks to a technical tweak. In all, Iyer has scored 86 runs off 44 short or short-of-a-good-length deliveries while being dismissed three times this season.”I’ve had nothing to do with that,” Ponting said. “You guys will see how his stance has evolved. He’s opened his stance up a little bit. He’s getting his right eye around more to the release point of the ball. And with his shoulders being open, he’s being able to create some more access to the ball when the ball is back in towards his body. So that’s stuff that he’s all worked out himself.”We’re still working on it pretty much every day. There’re little things that he needs to do because it is such a drastic move that he’s done. He’s got to make sure that everything is in the right position and all his movements are syncing up really well.

“I think the one thing in our favour is we had a four- or five-day camp up in Dharamshala before this season started. Everyone went there except for a couple of the overseas guys. So our Indian guys will have a good understanding of what the conditions will be like up there”Ricky Ponting on PBKS’s three “home” games in Dharamsala

“But, I mean, some of the innings he’s played this tournament so far have been as good as anyone else’s. I mean, there’s been a lot of hundreds made, but Shreyas’ first game when he made 97, that’s as good an innings as I’ve seen in the tournament.”Former India coach Ravi Shastri also recently spoke of the technical adjustment Iyer had made to handle the short ball better.”He was very side on, was back and back, very much leg side. The fact that he’s prepared to go back and across now and with a very upright stance and the pick up,” Shastri noted on . “While he’s moving back, the bat’s being picked up as well when he’s going back and across.”That allows him to play both sides of the wicket. If they [fast bowlers] bang it in short, he can pull and hook. And if there’s any room outside the off stump, he can cut as well. So that opens up the game for him rather than being too leg side where the rib cage was being targeted and then there was no escape.”2:05

Jaffer – Prabhsimran not throwing it away post-powerplay was good to watch

PBKS next head to Dharamsala, their second home, where they will play three of their remaining four league-stage fixtures. The team has lost the last four games they have played at the venue across two seasons, but Ponting backed them to remedy that home record in this IPL.”I mean, it’s still our home ground, right? It’s our home ground,” Ponting said. “We should know the conditions better than anybody else. We should be able to play the conditions better than anybody else.”We’ve got a very long travel day tomorrow, and then we’ve got two training days before our next game. So, we’ll have a chance to look at the conditions and work them out. I think the one thing in our favour is we had a four- or five-day camp up in Dharamshala before this season started. Everyone went there except for a couple of the overseas guys. So our Indian guys will have a good understanding of what the conditions will be like up there.”I know it’s a slightly different time of year now, but I think we’ve got a pretty good idea of what the conditions will be like.”

Man Utd and INEOS now submit late "improved" offer to sign "superb" star

After their late victory against Burnley exposed their problems for all to see once again, Manchester United have reportedly submitted an “improved” offer to sign a major upgrade.

Man Utd eyeing late Onana upgrade

When Andre Onana came flying out of position in an attempt to punch clear against Grimsby in midweek, only to hand the League Two side their second goal on a plate, Ruben Amorim could only watch on as a similar story unfolded. Meanwhile, Altay Bayindir hasn’t been a lot more encouraging, given that his mistake handed Arsenal their winning goal on the opening day.

Simply put, whether it’s been Bayindir or Onana, Manchester United’s goalkeeping department has not been good enough for some time. And INEOS are still attempting to find a solution as Monday’s deadline approaches.

With less than 48 hours left until the transfer window slams shut, fresh reports have indicated that Emiliano Martinez has emerged as an option. The Aston Villa goalkeeper has been linked with a move away from the Midlands all summer and could now finally get a departure courtesy of those at Old Trafford.

Whilst Martinez is less mistake-prone than Onana, last season’s numbers suggest that he wouldn’t be the major upgrade that Amorim requires. The similar save percentage between the two makes for particularly concerning reading and the last thing United need is another liability between the sticks.

Moreover, it’s worth noting that Martinez is already 32 years old. If Amorim is to lead a successful project at Old Trafford then he needs a consistent No.1 who will be at the centre of his side for years to come and Martinez cannot guarantee that. Instead, INEOS would be best to turn to a shot-stopper that has been on their radar all summer long.

Man Utd submit "improved" Lammens offer

According to Mike McGrath, Manchester United have now submitted an “improved” offer to sign Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp and a medical could take place on Sunday if the goalkeeper agrees to a move.

Senne Lammens for Royal Antwerp.

Aston Villa have also asked about the shot-stopper and would set off a domino effect resulting in Martinez joining United if they hijacked the Red Devils’ move for Lammens.

Lammens has been the name on United’s list for most of the summer and it’s clear to see why. Praised for a “superb” season by scout Jacek Kulig at the end of the last campaign, the Belgian is still just 23 years old and represents the young, rising star that would suit this stage of Amorim’s project.

Video: Replay angle of Sunderland goal vs Aston Villa looks bad for Watkins

Aston Villa came away from their encounter with Sunderland with their third point of the season, albeit they will feel a major sense of frustration after adding to their winless run in the Premier League.

Despite Reinildo’s dismissal on 33 minutes, the visitors took until midway through the second half to break the deadlock courtesy of a sweet Matty Cash strike that deceived Robin Roefs.

However, Sunderland weren’t to be denied after Wilson Isidor latched onto a weighted Granit Xhaka header to fire home in smart fashion, and the Black Cats skipper praised their fight against a man advantage: “Of course the red card changed the plans we created during the week, but in the end I believe the one point is much more than deserved.

With the Villans’ run without a win extending to six matches, supporters will be feeling irate, and they are unlikely to experience a lift in their mood amid Ollie Watkins’ role in the Black Cats securing a point against Emery’s men.

Ollie Watkins' role in Sunderland's equaliser against Aston Villa

Post-match, Emery admitted that his side were ‘lazy sometimes defensively’ against Sunderland, and it is hard to disagree when watching the hosts’ equaliser back with the benefit of hindsight.

Watkins wasn’t the only one culpable as Emery’s side shipped a decisive Isidor effort, but the England international was caught short as Xhaka’s unchallenged header morphed into an assist despite the Aston Villa striker and several other teammates having plenty of time to contest for the ball.

Ultimately, a lapse in concentration that managed to infiltrate several players has left the Villans with a point, which they will view as an opportunity missed due to holding a man advantage for the majority of Sunday’s encounter.

Nevertheless, Sunderland racked up a better Expected Goals total (1.05) than the away side (0.71) and also took on more shots, heightening the cause for concern at the club after yet another unconvincing performance on the road.

Watkins could hold key to Aston Villa revival

Undoubtedly, Aston Villa are lacking inspiration in the forward areas and need someone to step up and take responsibility, which has left the door ajar for Watkins to become a leading light through the middle following his exploits last season.

Six appearances and no goals so far in 2025/26 represents an unconvincing return for the Three Lions international. Regardless, form is temporary and class is permanent, as shown in his performances across 2024/25.

Conseguimos virar. Os jogadores estão de parabéns – concluiu Luxemburgo.

ALEXIS SÁNCHEZ

Quem falou do Alexis Sánchez? Será que foi falado internamente? Coisas do futebol.

Bennett, Williams, lower order help Zimbabwe nose ahead despite Mehidy five-for

Zimbabwe nosed ahead of Bangladesh after the second day’s play of the first Test in Sylhet with half-centuries from Brian Bennett and Sean Williams. Their lower order and tail also resisted to add 80 runs for the last four wickets that got them a lead of 82. They finished the day by breaking Bangladesh’s opening stand, and the hosts are still 25 runs behind.Bangladesh’s solace came in the form of Mehidy Hasan Miraz’s first five-wicket haul at home in nearly two-and-a-half years. He finished with 5 for 52 after speedster Nahid Rana picked up three wickets, including those of the openers. Zimbabwe strung together small partnerships after the opening stand of 69, often dominating periods of play.Bangladesh lost Shadman Islam in the evening for 4 in the fourth over, when a superb Blessing Muzarabani delivery had him edging to second slip. His opening partner Mahmudul Hasan Joy got a reprieve on 6 in the following over when wicketkeeper Nyasha Mayavo dropped a regulation chance to his right.Mahmudul finished the day unbeaten on 28, while Mominul Haque was on 15 when play was called off at 5.33pm.Rana earlier gave Bangladesh their first breakthrough when he banged in a bouncer towards Ben Curran’s chest. The left-hand opener only managed to tap it to short leg where Mominul completed the catch diving forward. It ended Zimbabwe’s impressive opening stand that lasted 16.5 overs.Rana then bowled a fuller delivery to get rid of Bennett, the other opener. Bennett was piercing the off-side field regularly, hitting eight of his ten boundaries in the range between backward point and cover. But when he looked to cut another ball square, it led to his downfall as he edged one behind on 57.Mehidy Hasan Miraz returned 5 for 52 but Zimbabwe still managed an 82-run lead•AFP/Getty Images

Hasan Mahmud joined in the act with a peach of an inswinger against No. 3 Nick Welch, who was bowled through the gate for 2. Captain Craig Ervine and Williams, Zimbabwe’s most experienced pair, steadied things for the next hour. They added 41 runs in 15 overs, before Rana had Ervine caught behind for 8.It was another short ball that reared up high on Ervine, who couldn’t get his bat out of the way. The ball brushed the face of his bat and he was caught behind by Jaker Ali. Williams forged another promising stand, this time with Wessly Madhevere, in the course of which Williams reached his fourth Test fifty. He did that in style too, sweeping Taijul Islam for a six and a four to reach the landmark. The 48-run partnership however ended when Madhevere played on to a Khaled Ahmed delivery, on 24. Williams too couldn’t kick on, mistiming a straight hit against Mehidy, caught by a tumbling Mahmudul running back from mid-off. Williams bent down in disbelief as he looked very well set, having scored 59 off 108 balls with the help of six fours and two sixes.Despite all their frontline batters back in the pavilion, Zimbabwe continued to fight. Mayavo made an enterprising 35 off 54 balls, including five fours, but he fell shortly after tea when Mehidy trapped him lbw. Wellington Masakadza played out 42 balls for his 6, and became Mehidy’s third victim, caught at cover. The tall pair of Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava then took on the Bangladesh bowlers in a 36-run ninth-wicket stand. Muzarabani struck two fours and a massive six, over long-on, during his 17 off 16. Ngarava was unbeaten on 28 off 44 balls, including a lovely straight hit for a six off Mehidy. The offspinner finished things off when he had Muzarabani stumped and Victor Nyauchi caught in the covers, to complete his five-for.

Ruben Amorim's sack fears allayed! Sir Jim Ratcliffe insists beleaguered Man Utd boss won't be axed in 'knee-jerk reaction' as INEOS chief gives manager THREE YEARS to prove himself

Manchester United part-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has massively eased the pressure on under-fire head coach Ruben Amorim, revealing he has three years to get things right at Old Trafford. The news comes in the wake of a hugely disappointing start to the Premier League season, with the 20-time title winners languishing in 10th place.

  • Massive boost for United boss Amorim

Man Utd finished in a lowly 15th place last season, lost the Europa League final to Tottenham and performances this season have led many to believe the Portuguese boss would be let go. But Amorim has been given a major boost after an update from Ratcliffe. The INEOS chief told podcast: "He has not had the best of seasons. Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years. That's where I would be. The press, sometimes I don't understand. They want overnight success. They think it's a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it's all going to be roses tomorrow. You can't run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week."

And asked what would happen if the Glazers told him to sack Amorim, Ratcliffe added: "It's not going to happen. That probably sums it up. We're local and they're the other side of the pond. That's a long way away to try and manage a football club as big as complex as Manchester United. We're here with feet on the ground. They get a bad rap…but they are really nice people and they are really passionate about the club."

Shocker of a season so far

Amorim's start to this season compounded the woes of his difficult first year, placing him under enormous pressure. After a disappointing 15th-place finish last term expectations for significant improvement were high. However, the season began with a shocking EFL Cup exit to League Two side Grimsby Town, a historic low point for the club. In the Premier League, United's inconsistency continues, and after their first seven matches, the team sit 10th. His preference for a back-three system and inconsistent results have reportedly even caused concern among the players.

  • Ratcliffe defends sweeping club cuts

Ratcliffe also discussed the wide-ranging, swingeing cuts made at the club in recent months, which have included 450 jobs being axed and the ending of staff perks. He said: "The costs were just too high. There are some fantastic people at Man Utd, but there was also a level of mediocrity and it had become bloated. I got a lot of flak for the free lunches, but no-one's ever given me a free lunch. The biggest correlation, like it or not, between results and any external factor – is profitability. The more cash you have got, the better squad you can build. So a lot of what we have done in the first year is spend an awful lot of time putting the club on a sustainable, healthy footing. We're not seeing all the benefits of the restructuring that we've done in this set of financial results and we were not in the Champions League. Those numbers will get better. Manchester United will become the most profitable football club in the world, in my view, and from that will stem, I hope, a long-term, sustainable, high-level of football."

More reason for United to be cheerful

News of the support from Ratcliffe comes hot on the heels of the much-needed victory over Sunderland in the league, but there remains plenty of work for Amorim to do. One win over a newly-promoted side won't convince the watching fans in the Stretford End, but beat champions Liverpool after the international break and opinions will definitely start to change.

Casemiro reveals his name has been spelled WRONG his entire career as Man Utd midfielder explains why he never corrected the 'mistake I'll carry forever'

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro has revealed that his name has been spelled incorrectly since his early days at Sao Paulo and he never changed it out of superstition. The Brazilian explained how a one-time printing error led to a career-long identity that stuck with him across Real Madrid, Brazil and Manchester United.

Casemiro, whose real name is Carlos Henrique Jose Francisco Venancio Casimiro revealed that the misspelling of his name began during one of his early matches for Sao Paulo. The club accidentally printed “Casemiro” on his shirt instead of “Casimiro.” After delivering a standout performance, the midfielder decided not to correct it.

Speaking to , he said: "For everyone, I will always be Casemiro… It's all Sao Paulo's fault. It all started when I played one of my first matches for Sao Paulo, the club where I went through the ranks, from the youth team to the first team [from 2002 to 2013]. They accidentally wrote my name with an 'e' on the shirt. I played very well.

"I’m a very superstitious person. I told the club: ‘There’s no need to change it — things are going well.’ It was a one-match mistake, and now I’ll carry it with me forever."

The spelling stuck ever since, becoming part of his footballing identity through Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Brazil.

From Real Madrid dominance to a Manchester United leader

After a glittering spell at Los Blancos, Casemiro joined United in 2022, quickly becoming a fan favourite for his leadership and experience. While his second season drew criticism for a dip in form, he’s since regained rhythm as part of Ruben Amorim’s system, anchoring United’s midfield in the Premier League this term. His revival comes amid rumours linking him with a Saudi Pro League move, but Amorim reportedly sees him as vital to Red Devil’s rebuild. The veteran’s recent consistency has once again made him one of United’s most dependable figures.

The 33-year-old continues to play a key role for both club and country. Backed by Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti, he could take over the Selecao captaincy if Neymar is sidelined for the 2026 World Cup. The midfielder has been named in Brazil’s squad for their upcoming friendlies against South Korea and Japan on October 10 and 14. After the international break, Casemiro will return to England as United prepare for a fierce Premier League clash against Liverpool.

Maresca must drop Chelsea dud who was as bad as Chalobah vs Bayern

Well, that was not the way Chelsea would have wanted to kickstart their European adventure.

After being out of the Champions League for over two years, the Blues were given a rough welcome back by Bayern Munich.

Enzo Maresca’s side found themselves down 2-0 within 27 minutes, and while Cole Palmer halved the deficit in the 29th minute, the Germans eventually ran out deserved 3-1 winners.

There were a couple of players who did themselves proud, but more who let the fans and manager down, including one starter who was even worse than Trevoh Chalobah.

Chalobah's disappointing display

Unlike some of his teammates, last night was not Chalobah’s first experience of the Champions League.

In fact, it was his tenth appearance in the competition, with his last being the quarter-final against Real Madrid in April 2022.

However, you’d never have guessed that, as instead of providing a calm presence behind his midfield, the Englishman was all over the place for much of the game.

Moreover, it was the 26-year-old who opened the scoring for the hosts when he poked home a cross from Michael Olise, a cross that Tosin Adarabioyo probably should have cleared.

The once-capped international’s statistics also made for some ugly reading, as in 96 minutes of action, he failed to make a single tackle, was dribbled past once, lost 50% of his ground duels, misplaced 50% of his long balls and won just 50% of his aerial duels.

It was enough for football.london’s Bobby Vincent to award him an 8/10 match rating at full-time, and describe his evening as something of a ‘nightmare.’

However, while Chalobah did score an own goal, one of his teammates was just as bad against Bayern, and therefore has to be dropped for the game against Manchester United on Saturday.

The Chelsea star who has to be dropped

Now there are a few other players who could be argued to be dropped for the game against United off the back of their performance last night, like Adarabioyo, Enzo Fernández and even Joao Pedro.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, in this instance, the player who disappointed us, and seemingly much of the fanbase, the most was Pedro Neto.

The Portuguese international started on the left and, unlike Palmer on the opposite flank, offered practically nothing throughout his time on the pitch.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers star was a ghost for almost all of the game, and when he did occasionally get involved in an attacking phase of play, he’d make a mistake.

It might sound overly harsh, but it’s an opinion shared by Vincent, who also awarded him a 4/10 match rating, writing that he ‘struggled’ and was ‘unable to make any sort of impact when Chelsea were attacking.’

Unsurprisingly, his statistics more than back up this appraisal of his performance.

In 68 minutes of inaction, the 25-year-old amassed a paltry combined expected assist and goals figure of just 0.04, took just 25 touches – 22 fewer than Robert Sanchez – completed just 11 passes, played one key pass, misplaced 100% of his crosses, failed in 50% of his dribbles, lost the ball nine times and was dribbled past twice.

Ultimately, while Chalobah will get the criticism for scoring the own goal, Neto was just as bad, if not worse, last night.

Therefore, he has to be dropped from the squad for Saturday’s game against United.
