BT Sport chooses London derby and Merseyside derby as top picks

The top London derby clash between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea is just one of the many unmissable Barclays Premier League football games to be shown by BT Sport in the first third of the season – the first time anyone other than Sky has had any of the top pick games.

Former Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas will be hoping his Tottenham side can defeat his former mentor Jose Mourinho, who is back in the hotseat for the Blues.

BT executives were today thrilled after securing a series of big-club clashes. BT Sport will also show one of the most famous Premier League rivalries, as Everton play host to Liverpool in the celebrated Merseyside derby.

In addition, BT Sport has chosen two games involving champions Manchester United. Most notably, Tottenham Hotspur against Manchester United at White Hart Lane. And the Premier League champions home fixture against newly-promoted Crystal Palace.

Another top pick match scheduled on BT Sport is Newcastle v Liverpool at St James’ Park.

BT Sport will also be showing the match between former champions Manchester City, at home to European hopefuls Everton. And Arsenal fans will only have to wait until the second week of the season to enjoy a potentially tricky away game at Fulham live on BT Sport.

Simon Green, director of BT Sport, said: “We are thrilled that BT Sport viewers will be able to enjoy these top-of-the-table matches free with BT broadband.

“This is the first time in Premier League history that top pick matches have been shown anywhere other than on Sky, but Sky TV customers can easily add BT Sport by calling us and if they have BT broadband they can get it for free.

“We have only used five of our top picks, which means that BT Sport will have another 13 throughout the remainder of the season, so our viewers have many more excellent Premier League games to come.

“In the first 13 Premier League rounds until December, we will show the biggest clubs at least twice including Tottenham taking on serious title contenders in both matches, against Manchester United and Chelsea.

“We have Manchester United twice, Manchester City twice, Arsenal twice, Chelsea twice, Everton twice and Liverpool three times.”

BT Sport’s first game of the season is Liverpool versus Stoke City at Anfield at 12.45pm on August 17. Former Liverpool and Stoke striker Michael Owen will be there in his first Premier League outing as a co-commentator for BT Sport.

On September 14, BT Sport will screen their first look at the current champions, when new Manchester United boss David Moyes plays host to Crystal Palace, led by their colourful manager Ian Holloway. Eagles fans will be keen to enjoy all the excitement of a huge Old Trafford clash now they are back in the top flight.

Tottenham boss Andre Villas-Boas will be playing host to his former colleague at Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan, Jose Mourinho, on September 28, as both Portuguese managers launch serious bids for the top four, if not the title. Much may depend on the appearance of BT Sport ambassador Gareth Bale, who has become the hottest transfer target in the Premier League.

Three weeks later, Newcastle United are at home to Liverpool at St James’ Park. They will be looking to avenge a 6-0 thrashing dished out by the Reds in the corresponding fixture last season. Newcastle fans will be looking for any evidence that their new Director of Football Joe Kinnear has been the man to help Alan Pardew return them to the top half of the table.

BT Sport has two engrossing games in November. The Merseyside derby, at Goodison Park, will be the first taste of the memorable encounter for new Toffees boss Roberto Martinez on November 23.

And the following weekend, Tottenham Hotspur take on Manchester United at White Hart Lane, which ended in a 1-1 draw last term, courtesy of an injury time Clint Dempsey equaliser. The match will be moved to an early kick-off on Sunday, December 1, if Tottenham have reached the group stages of the Europa League.

BT Sport will show 38 exclusively live football matches from the Barclays Premier League, including 18 of the ‘top picks’ from August 2013 for three seasons. The channels will also show live FA Cup, UEFA Europa League, top tier live football from Scotland, Germany, Italy, France, Brazil, Australia and the USA, plus action from the FA Women’s Super League and 30 live matches from the Football Conference.

£9million price tag slapped on Liverpool target

Simon Mignolet can leave Sunderland this summer for £9million, according to Sky Sports.

The Belgian international is looking to move to a top Premier League club this summer, and wants to raise his profile ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Mignolet, after reportedly having a £7million bid rejected. The Reds could look at Mignolet as a replacement for Pepe Reina, who has been repeatedly linked with a move to Barcelona.

Mignolet was Sunderland’s Player of the Season this year, after keeping 11 clean sheets for the Black Cats, who finished just three points above the relegation zone.

The 25-year-old has just two years left on his contract, and Sunderland know that his value will decrease if he enters his final season. Despite their reluctance to sell, manager Paolo Di Canio knows that club won’t get as much money next season if they keep hold of the star keeper.

The Reds have also been linked with a move for Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, who was under a lot of transfer speculation from Manchester United and Arsenal in January, before deciding to stay with the Potters.

But Sunderland have told Liverpool that Mignolet is available, if they meet their £9million valuation for the goalkeeper. Brendan Rodgers will be hoping to secure the deal before Liverpool’s pre-season tour of Asia and Australia.

Do you think Mignolet is the right man for Liverpool? Is £9million a fair price tag?

Derby-day win continues Millwall revival

The Championship must be one of the most unpredictable leagues in the world…

Millwall epitomise this. Look at us the week before, there seemed to be no hope after the humiliation at the hands of Derby County, now two wins in a week have pushed the Lions up the table, and maybe they can start to look up, rather than down…

We had the win against top of the league Blackpool on Tuesday night, but the arguably “bigger” game was going to be away at Charlton on Saturday.

This game was always going to take on slightly more significance since Crystal Palace take their one year tour of the Premier League, but this game is only a rivalry by geographical sense.

But there is no real rivalry of hatred. The hatred only comes one way and that’s from The Valley end. Charlton can’t stand Millwall and it shows. Whereas Millwalll just see Charlton as something to laugh at and three points…

It was the same case yet again, as a deflected Scott McDonald goal saw the Lions claim three points..

Games recently against Charlton haven’t been the most prettiest affairs, and neither was this one. The first half saw barely a shot on target. The second half opened up a lot more with Millwall have the majority of chances, Charlton not registering a major shot on target until the last fifteen minutes of the game.

The game for me highlighted three things. How bad Charlton are. I know they had vital players missing, but if they play like that this season it’ll be trips to Oldham and Port Vale next year.

Also how good some of the football was at times from the Lions. From the highlights you’ll see a late Scott Malone chance that hit the side netting, the build-up play to that was scintillating to watch. Maybe Lomas is getting somewhere where Jackett massively failed, a passing team.

Also, Lomas spoke last week about how he needed to include real Millwall players, I don’t know why these players weren’t starting before, but they’re now in. Jimmy Abdou and Paul Robinson have been two of the best players in the revival of form. They might not be the best players but they bring real balance into the team, unlike the likes of Shittu…

Saturdays game see the Lions host Leeds United, now this is a “rivalry” that has more hostility compared to Charlton. Another chance for the Lions to continue the good form and the push up the table under Steve Lomas.

La Liga star rules out Arsenal switch

Barcelona midfielder Alex Song has scrapped claims that he could re-join Arsenal in January, according to reports from The Metro.

The Cameroonian midfielder has been strongly linked with a return to the Premier League in recent months, with the Gunners and Manchester United being mooted as potential destinations.

Despite having only completed a big move to the Nou Camp last year, Song has been consistently linked with a switch away from the Catalan giants after failing to establish himself as an important first-team player.

Sergio Busquets is seen as Barca’s main holding midfielder, while Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas are preferred in the more advanced roles.

As a result, Song has been an infrequent starter, and has even been deployed at centre-back occasionally.

However, the 26-year-old says that he is happy in Spain and that he is not looking to make a return to Arsenal.

“I am happy at Barcelona,” Song said.

“I play in one of the best leagues in the world, everybody treats me very well, and there are some of the best players in the world here.

“You don’t know what might happen in the future, but I still have a few years left on my contract here.”

Everton gaffer delighted with striker’s debut

Roberto Martinez was delighted with Lacina Traore’s Everton debut, and hopes there is plenty more to come from the Ivorian forward in the future, reports talkSPORT.

The on-loan Monaco forward didn’t take long to get off the mark for the Toffees, scoring inside three minutes of his debut as Everton reached the FA Cup quarter finals by beating Swansea 3-1.

Martinez pipped West Ham to the signing of the 23-year-old during the January transfer window, and could not hide his excitement following his debut performance.

“For Lacina Traore to play 60 minutes was a real success for us. He’s been working really hard behind the scenes and for us to get 60 minutes was the target,” Martinez said.

“For him to be able to play against a team like Swansea was a real nightmare for a striker coming into our league. I thought he coped with the instructions for the team off the ball really well.

“And he then scored within two minutes of his new career at Everton so it’s a beautiful sign for the future.”

Traore was replaced with Steven Naismith, who went on to score and win a penalty for Everton before being taken off with concussion.

Martinez revealed that he hoped the Scot would be fit enough to take part in the week’s training, despite obvious concern at the time of the incident.

“He’s OK, we’re going to check him in the next 24 hours. He had a bit of delayed concussion when he had the knock,” he added.

“He was OK but then all of a sudden he became a bit dizzy and he couldn’t remember much of what was happening and at that point we couldn’t take any risks.

“Obviously we’ll keep him in observation for the next 24 hours but we hope he’ll be fine and he can join the group for next week’s training.”

If there was one game that summed up his Tottenham tenure, it was last night…

Nothing encapsulated a farcical few months for Tottenham any better than last night’s festivities under the lights at White Hart Lane. It had been such a drama filled day for those in and around the club that it was perhaps easy to forget that there was a Premier League game last night at all.

Off-field uncertainty and the brutal undermining of his position on a near daily basis has dominated Tim Sherwood’s tenure. The news that the Englishman would likely be leaving his position in the summer hardly came as a huge surprise, but the manner of it left a bitter taste in the mouths of many. Whatever you think of a Sherwood as a manager, his treatment whilst in charge of the club has been pretty disgraceful.

As much as he tried to bat away the sympathisers it was difficult not to feel sorry for a man that looked broken even after leading his side to a romping 5-1 victory over relegation threatened Sunderland:

“I can’t comment about my employment – you’ll have to ask my employers,’” he said.

“I don’t know whether it (speculation) does anyone any favours. We’ve just got to get on with it. There has been an opportunity to manage this great club and I’ve done well. I think my win percentage is higher than any Tottenham manager.”

“I don’t want anyone to feel sorry for me and it’s been a great opportunity.”

Even after what appeared to be a despondent farewell speech it was still uncertainty that dominated the mood last night. The club were quick to write off the stories as ‘speculation’ and there doesn’t seem to be any definitive decision on Sherwood’s future as yet. He continues to be a man precariously placed on the edge of the footballing precipice.

The off field antics aside, it was actually the 90 minutes at White Hart Lane last night that truly summed up everything about Sherwood’s reign at Spurs.

We had it all. There was remonstrating with the fourth official, fans and basically anyone else that would listen to Sherwood’s bursts of fiery passion. He may be tactically misguided but the drive and determination was still there for all to see last night.

The performance was typically Spurs-like; a farcically gifted opener for Sunderland followed by 50 odd minutes of drab monotony, alarm bells ringing once more. This wasn’t a game for the purist by any means, but Spurs certainly did offer fans a bit of respite from week after week of disappointment in the second half. Christian Eriksen again showing why he was the coup of the summer’s transfer window and why Spurs should be building their side around him for years to come.

It wouldn’t have been a Sherwood victory without a couple of goals from his adoptive son Emmanuel Adebayor, complete with the usual salute.

5-1 seems emphatic, but some were left unconvinced by a performance that at times lacked a certain degree of conviction. Both Paulinho and Chadli looked abject, Lennon largely anonymous and both wing backs well out of their depth at this level.

Even in victory Sherwood’s sides struggle to win everyone over.

You can lump me in with the rest that have supposedly conspired against Sherwood, but last night was not just symptomatic of his tenure, more so Spurs over the course of the whole season.

There has yet to be a game where the whole side has clicked, two or three players maximum at a time have carried Spurs over the line and this has got to be a worry going forward.

An evening dominated by passion and drama; even Sherwood’s staunchest critics would have left the game last night having at least seen the man go out with a bang.

Nothing more than a folly for some greater grand design at Spurs, it is difficult not to be sympathetic towards the departing Englishman after last night.

Twitter reacts to Celtic manager’s resignation

In a brief statement earlier today, Neil Lennon announced that he had left Celtic after four years as manager.  The 42-year old Northern Irishman led the club to three Scottish Premier League titles and two Scottish Cup successes in his time at Parkhead.

Lennon’s representative Martin Reilly stressed that his client “has nothing lined up” and that “he just feels now is the time to move on to the next challenge.” However, the forty two year old is believed to have been concerned by the budget at his disposal to strengthen the squad.

After the news broke, numerous Celtic fans took to Twitter to pay tribute to Lennon.

Others have already begun to speculate over the Northern Irishman’s next managerial post.

However, some have already begun to cast doubts over Lennon’s managerial capabilities.

In any case, it will be interesting to not only see where Lennon ends up but also who ends up replacing him at Celtic. At the time of writing, Henrik Larsson and David Moyes are two names being strongly linked with the post.

SIX ‘out-of-the-box’ signings for Everton

Apart from battling for the domestic league and trophies next season, Everton will also be involved the Europa League as well. This will mean they need a bigger squad in order to maintain everyone’s fitness with their increase of games should they advance into the deeper rounds.

Having already made two signings with the acquisition of Romelu Lukaku and Muhamed Besic, Roberto Martinez may still need to bolster his squad with a few more instant impact signings if he is to bring some success to the club.

With this in mind, here are SIX players who can skip the adaptation stage and make give the manager some immediate results…

Nani

Name: Nani

Age: 27

Position: Winger (Right, Left)

Nationality: Portugal

Club: Manchester United

Price: £10 – £15 million

Nani’s future at Manchester United is still uncertain after falling down the pecking order in recent years. He is a player that can change the complete pace of the game at times and may disappear completely in some. A move to Everton could give him a second chance of proving himself in the English Premier League.

With only 11 league appearances last season, he is surely in search for some regular first team football. Despite that, he played all three of Portugal’s World Cup games, netting one in the process as many can see that his quality is still there if he is given the opportunity.

Javier Hernandez

Name: Javier Hernandez

Age: 26

Position: Striker

Nationality: Mexico

Club: Manchester United

Price: £13 – £16 million

With only six starts and 18 substitute appearances the previous season, Javier Hernandez has been unhappy out his lack of first team football throughout the previous season. Despite this, he still managed four goals and three assist as he is now out to prove his worth to Louis van Gaal.

Roberto Martinez is said to be interest in bringing the Mexican over and could use the allure of Europa League football to do so. Hernandez has always been seen as a great goal scorer and a switch to Everton wouldn’t change that.

Memphis Depay

Name: Memphis Depay

Age: 20

Position: Left Wing

Nationality: Netherlands

Club: PSV Eindhoven

Price: £10 – £15 million

Memphis Depay could be a real possibility if Tottenham Hotspur are looking to add some extra pace down the flanks. His World Cup performance has caught the eye of many other clubs as well with Louis van Gaal also previously being linked to bring the Dutch star to Old Trafford.

Almost still quite young, he has already proven himself on the world stage and could find a switch to the English Premier League to be a good career move. Despite the physicality of the English came, any club will be boosted by his quickness and creativity down the left wing.

Ron Vlaar

Name: Ron Vlaar

Age: 29

Position: Centre-back

Nationality: Netherlands

Club: Aston Villa

Price: £5 – £8 million

Ron Vlaar made himself a top defensive target with his very impressive displays at the World Cup for the Netherlands. With squad depth something Roberto Martinez will need to think about when he leads his team into the Europa League, the addition of the Dutch centre-back can sure up his squad’s defence.

Having joined Aston Villa back in 2012, he will be ready for the new campaign without needing to cope with any major adaptations due to the fact that he will have already faced many of his opponents over the years. Martinez may need to hurry on an offer because it is believed that Louis van Gaal wants him at Manchester United as well.

James Milner

Name: James Milner

Age: 28

Position: Right Midfield

Nationality: England

Club: Manchester City

Price: £10 – £15 million

James Milner is seen as a tireless midfielder who always gives his all for his club and could become a great asset, much like how Gareth Barry made the switch from Manchester City. Every time he was given a chance to prove himself, he manages to impress everyone.

With only 12 starts and 19 substitute appearances, he managed to score one goal and provide another three. Roberto Martinez will need the likes of the England star in order to add a greater sense of depth into his side as they prepare for next season. The Toffees should be able to offer him a starting berth as everyone will still have another chance to impress their boss.

Loic Remy

Name: Loic Remy

Age: 27

Position: Striker

Nationality: France

Club: Queens Park Rangers

Price: £13 – £18 million

Loic Remy saw his move to Liverpool get cancelled and is now back at Queens Park Rangers despite stating his intentions of playing in Europe. Everton could offer him exactly that because they could also be in search of another top striker despite recently signing Romelu Lukaku.

He managed to net 14 goals in 24 starts for Newcastle United last season while on loan, meaning he has already proven himself in the English league. If he joins Everton, it would mean that he could be given the chance to play as their starting forward, both domestically as well as in the Europa League.

F3 World Tour – Interview with British Freestyler Andrew Henderson

The London leg of the F3 World Tour took place on Wednesday, and as you would expect when the top 16 freestylers come together, the skills that they displayed were incredible.

In a world where doing three ‘around-the-worlds’ in one go is the norm, we had a chat with British contender and current leader Andrew Henderson before the competition.

Q – How and when did Football Freestyle begin for you?

Andrew – I started Freestyle in 2006 after seeing videos online of some guys doing tricks and I was kinda blown away. Like ‘this has got to be fake’! And then I just kind of fell in love with it. I thought it was so cool that these guys could do all these crazy tricks and they hadn’t been taught by anyone. They didn’t need a coach, they didn’t need any special facilities, didn’t need a team around them, and they didn’t need a training ground or stadium – only a ball. I found so much passion in that, because i’d played so many different sports – both team and individual – but none where there was so much freedom that Freestyle Football provided.

Q – What was the first trick that you managed to nail down that got your Freestyle juices flowing?

Andrew – The first trick that I landed was the regular keepy-uppys to build the fundamentals, but after that an ‘around-the-world’. And now actually I hold the world record for that which is kinda funny.

Q – Were you any good on the football pitch?

Andrew – I don’t mean to blow my own trumpet – but yes. I think that if I put any where near as much effort into football as I have with freestyle then I think I would have done pretty good. When I was younger, yeah I was a good player.

Q – How do you think Freestyle compares to standard football?

Andrew – Freestyle is so different from football and now it’s a sport in it’s own right. The only similarity is that we use a football and it’s a sport. Freestyle is more than just a sport – it’s an art-form, and I consider it as football but an extreme version. There are all these crazy skills, and you might see Neymar or Cristiano Ronaldo balance the ball on their head or their neck, but you’re not going to see them balance the ball on the side of their head, flick it up, do a backflip, do five times ‘around-the-world’, along with the music on a stage. You’re not going to see that – and that’s what I love about Freestyle.

Q – Would what be your one tip to a young footballer who wanted to become a Football Freestyler?

Andrew – Advice that I would give to a young footballer is – all you need is a ball. Don’t be afraid to get involved and ask questions online, even to the top guys. Just yesterday myself and Gautier Fayolle (fellow top 16 freestyler in the world) we posted a picture on Instagram and sat down for an hour or two answering questions. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice.

Q – Do you find it difficult to stand out from the other competitors?

Andrew – It’s difficult to stand out from the guys for a lot of people, but it’s all about being creative. The ball is a tool to express yourself. I have an athletic/aggressive style – I’m jumping high, running and sliding. Whereas other guys like Gautier are using the music more like a dance, and he’s taking inspiration from the likes of Charlie Chaplin whereas maybe i’ll take inspiration from the likes of Bruce Lee.

Q – Are you looking forward to the home crowd tonight?

Andrew – Having the F3 World Tour here in London, with it being my home crowd here to support me, the pressure is on. I’m not feeling it now but I know when I’m up on stage and I see people I know in the crowd it’ll be interesting, but i’ll think it will motivate me. I won the last leg in Beijing and I had a few supporters there but nothing like they’ll be tonight – we’ll see.

Q – You got off to the perfect start -as you said – in Beijing. Is that the minimum you’re after tonight?

Andrew – Absolutely. The minimum I want here is to finish first. I’m going for the win 100% and if I’ve got to beat the hardest guys in my path then so be it. I’m not thinking about second place one bit.

It wasn’t to be for Andrew as he came up against eventual 3rd place PWG representing The Philippines in the 1st round and lost 2 votes to 1. He spoke briefly of his disappointment after the battle.

Watch Andrew’s defeat in the video below and make your own mind up.

//www.youtube.com/embed/cwJcdPsLXXI

Andrew – I’m not the type of guy who makes excuses but I tried hiding it but the last few days I’ve had a cold, and travelling around so much has taken it’s toll. I didn’t show 100% of my ability today but hats off to Philip (PWG), he’s an awesome freestyler. I’m confident that I have the tricks in my arsenal to win these competitions but you can’t have it your way every time.

The competition was eventually won by Colombian ‘Boyka’ as he beat ‘Charly’ from Argentina in the final battle (video below). Some incredible skills and although it wasn’t the result that Andrew wanted, he’s still very much in with a shout of taking the title with one stage left to play.
