Celtic suffer blow ahead of Aberdeen as Odsonne Edouard not likely to feature

Celtic were unable to rectify their mistakes made against Rangers at the weekend after AC Milan handed them another loss on home soil. The Hoops were brushed aside by the feisty Italians, who rode out a 3-1 victory in their recent Europa League clash.

That’s now two losses on the bounce for Neil Lennon’s side, who haven’t registered such form since July. It appears that their Old Firm defeat has unsettled things and they will now shift attention to Aberdeen in hopes to regain some form. A poor display against Milan will see Lennon return to the drawing board, but he’ll have a tough decision to make when selecting his attackers.

Odsonne Edouard has been out of action after testing positive for Covid-19. According to the Glasgow Times, he is back in training but still not fully recovered and is a doubt ahead of Celtic’s next league match on Sunday.

Edouard a big miss for Celtic

The 22-year-old tallied an astonishing 21 goals and 12 assists in 27 Premiership appearances last season, playing a huge part in the Hoops’ ninth consecutive title. He is continuing his run of good form into the current campaign, already boasting four goals in seven games (via Transfermarkt).

Had Edouard been available against Rangers, it could have been a completely different game. Instead, Steven Gerrard’s men were victorious and extend their lead over their bitter rivals at the top of the table.

Lennon opted for a strike partnership between Mohamed Elyounoussi and Patryk Klimala at the weekend, who were both dropped in favour of Leigh Griffiths in a lone No.9 role last night. Neither of these approaches were successful, which puts a huge strain on the manager going into the Aberdeen fixture.

Elyounoussi pulled one goal back against AC Milan, which could earn him a start on Sunday, but after a poor display from Griffiths, it’s likely he will be demoted to the bench. Celtic would hugely benefit from Edouard’s influence right now and it’ll be euphoria on camp when he does finally returns to the action.

Profit Players: Stephen Ward proved to be a snip at just £567,000 for Burnley

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

On the eve of their return to the Premier League six years ago, Burnley added to their defensive ranks with an experienced yet cut-price acquisition. Stephen Ward, who already had three seasons in the top flight with Wolves, joined from Molineux for a knockdown fee of just £567,000 (as per TransferMarkt).

Initially the move didn’t go to well for the 50-cap Republic of Ireland international, who started just seven league games in an injury-hit campaign as the Clarets were relegated at the end of the 2014/15 season – the second time that Ward had suffered that fate, having also been in the Wolves side that finished bottom of the Premier League three years previously.

However, he managed to carve out a more regular place in Sean Dyche’s first team the following season, starting 23 Championship games as Burnley made an immediate return to the top flight. The Irish left-back showed his strengths in both a defensive an attacking sense during that campaign, averaging 2.2 interceptions per game as well as providing four assists.

After his abortive first year at Turf Moor, Ward made up for lost time when the Clarets were back in the Premier League in 2016/17, starting all but one match and posting impressive match averages of 1.9 successful tackles and two interceptions. August 2017 was a month to remember for him, as he scored in an opening day win at then-champions Chelsea and signed a new deal at Turf Moor.

Ward started 28 league games that season as Burnley finished seventh to qualify for the Europa League, giving him a first foray into European football since playing in the Intertoto Cup for Bohemians in his homeland as a teenager.

However, the Clarets failed to make the group stage and the Irishman lost his place in the side to Charlie Taylor during 2018/19, making just three league appearances all season. He ended his five-year association with the club last summer when he joined Stoke, where he has struggled for game-time in recent months.

Ward left Burnley after making 113 appearances for the club – considering that he cost them a mere £567,000, that works out at a very economical £5,017.70 per game, a bargain for a player who for three years was a firm favourite of Dyche and who helped the Clarets to qualify for Europe.

Sheffield United: Oliver McBurnie models new home kit in latest Instagram post

With the season coming to an end, fans are now eagerly waiting for the 2020/21 campaign. Sheffield United supporters will be very excited for it to start following their return to the Premier League last season which saw them finish in the top ten.

One of the players who has helped them achieve this position in the division is Oliver McBurnie, who signed last summer from Swansea City for £17.19 million, per Transfermarkt. The Scottish international scored six goals for the Blades, which made him the joint-top goal scorer at the club, per WhoScored.

It looks like he won’t be going anywhere in the summer and his latest Instagram post proves that whilst also giving Blades supporters something else to smile about as they wait for football to return.

The forward posted a

/CDbj9b-pMEt/?igshid=1kcnsruv82h31″>picture of himself in the new Sheffield United home kit for the 2020/21 season, supported with the caption: ‘Doing up model🤣 what we thinking about the new kit???’

The new home shirt, made by Adidas, looks very nice, with the standard red and white stripes, but instead of it the stripes starting at the shoulders, the new update sees the shoulders completely white, with the stripes starting from the chest down.

The simple change seems to have gone down well, with many commenting on McBurnie’s post to suggest that they enjoy the new design, whilst those who have not seen it yet should like what they see. Hopefully McBurnie will get even better next season and if he can improve on his goal tally and possibly reach ten goals, then it will be a very successful campaign for the 24 year-old.

Blades fans, what are your thoughts on the new kit? Let us know down below!

Tottenham Hotspur: Pundit urges Spurs to send teenager star on loan next season

Noel Whelan has suggested Tottenham Hotspur should send Troy Parrott on loan next season, in an exclusive with Football Insider.

The former Leeds United forward feels Parrott is currently being wasted at Spurs as he has sat on the sidelines for the majority of the season so far.

Appearing on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, Charlton assistant manager Johnnie Jackson recently revealed the Addicks were keen to sign the youngster on loan back in January, and added he will not be short of suitors as the transfer window approaches.

The 18-year-old has made just four appearances for Jose Mourinho’s side, averaging merely five minutes per game in the Premier League up until now.

Whelan has urged the Lilywhites to sort out a loan for the Irishman if they cannot guarantee him substantial game time, as the club are in danger of hindering his development as a player on-and-off the pitch.

Speaking to assistant editor Russell Edge, the pundit insisted “he hasn’t been given a chance and he needs football, he needs to go out there on loan, he needs to be playing at a very good, decent standard and learning about himself and his game.

“He needs a full season at a club. If he’s not going to be playing at Tottenham, he needs a full season to bed himself in, have a pre-season with them and know where he’s going to be for the duration of that campaign.

“He’s got an amazing bit of talent, not just for Tottenham’s benefit but for the national side as well. They’re going to want somebody that’s going to be filling in to that position, someone that’s going to be playing regular football to get the best out of him.

“If he’s not going to be used by Jose Mourinho then he’s got to be put out on loan, given that chance to progress in his future and in his game and make him a man, because right now that’s the only way he’s going to find out about himself as a person and as a player.

“By going through these ecstatic times when he’s had a great game and scored a goal but also find out about his character where he’s had a bad game, missed some chances and lost – how can he bounce back? It’s all part of a process to become the complete player.”

As it stands, it is hard to argue with Whelan here, as on the face of it sending Parrott out on loan would surely benefit Spurs in the future.

The teenager has trained regularly with the first team, meaning he has missed out on valuable minutes with the U23 squad as a result. However, he has still managed to score 6 goals and create 1 assist in only 4 games in the UEFA Youth League at the time of writing.

Reports suggest the Tottenham hierarchy expects big things from the Irish international in the years ahead, but he needs to be playing more consistently if he is to achieve his full potential. A spell at a lower league club could give him the experience he needs to come back and challenge for a spot in the senior squad.

Tottenham Hotspur: Monaco interested in Serge Aurier; good news for Jose Mourinho

Tottenham Hotspur have a lack of options at right-back at the moment.

Although Serge Aurier is available for Tottenham, Spurs could be in a sticky situation if he picks up an injury. Both Japhet Tanganga, who has become known for his versatility, and Juan Foyth are currently out injured. Meanwhile, Kyle Walker-Peters will finish the rest of the season with Southampton.

According to Sky Sports, AS Monaco are interested in signing Spurs defender Aurier this summer, which could be good news for Jose Mourinho.

Plagued by problems on and off the pitch, it is safe to say this season couldn’t get much worse for Spurs, and Aurier has hardly done himself any favours so far.

Indeed, the Ivorian angered the club’s hierarchy after breaking the government guidelines during the nationwide lockdown. This isn’t the first time he has been at the centre of attention for all of the wrong reasons.

For whatever reason, Aurier seems to find himself embroiled in controversy at every opportunity. His career has been dotted with high-profile incidents right from the start.

In fact, his lawyers had to plead with the Home Office to let him into the country before Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League tie with Arsenal in November 2016 after he was given a suspended two-month sentence in France for assaulting a police officer.

To make matters worse, his performances on the pitch have left a lot to be desired. At times he has been a total liability this season, making a string of mistakes and errors, and Mourinho has turned to scouting Norwich City’s Max Aarons as a result.

Although Aurier is the club’s first-choice right-back, this has led to an imbalance between the defence and attack on the flank. While the 27-year-old has earned a higher WhoScored rating than his Norwich counterpart, his conduct has come under increasing scrutiny.

As well as fixtures and TV Channels. There are also options on where to watch you can also open a legal stream right there with broadcasters such as SKy Sports, BT Sports, Amazon Prime and YouTube.

Mourinho has never coped well with disruptive influences in the dressing room, as he binned Bastian Schweinsteiger during his time in charge of Manchester United. Therefore, Monaco’s interest in the £14m-valued defender presents the Spurs manager with the perfect opportunity to get rid of the controversial figure.

As it stands, Mourinho could sell Aurier to reinvest the funds in Aarons instead.

Sunderland fans react to Keith Downie post about Josh Maja

Loads of Sunderland fans have been reacting to a tweet from Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie, who delivered a great big “I told you so” after watching the second series of Netflix’s Sunderland ‘Til I Die.

While most of the chat following the release of series two on Wednesday has been centred around Charlie Methven’s hilarious attempts to turn the Stadium of Light into a rave, Downie was more interested in the events surrounding the exit of Josh Maja.

The reporter clearly feels he took some unfair stick when the youngster was still at the club, taking to Twitter to state he got “slaughtered” for suggesting Maja wanted to leave Wearside.

Maja has bagged nine goals and three assists in 31 Bordeaux appearances since his exit, while his replacement Will Grigg has managed eight goals and the same number of assists in 49 showings for the Black Cats.

You can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below, where one supporter said it was “stupid” from the club while another was just annoyed Downie was reminding him of Maja’s exit in the early hours of the morning…

Newcastle fans react to former ace Kevin Mbabu’s display

After signing Kevin Mbabu as a 17-year-old back in 2013, Newcastle didn’t really get to see the defender truly flourish and develop at St James’ Park.

He spent the majority of his time on Tyneside with the club’s U23s, and only made five first-team appearances. After then spending a season on loan back home in Switzerland with BSC Young Boys, the Magpies allowed him to join them on a permanent basis in the summer of 2017, and his career has gone uphill since then.

Spot the fact from the fib: Are these Premier League records true or false?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

After playing 100 games for the Swiss side, Mbabu earned a move to Bundesliga outfit VfL Wolfsburg, and on Saturday afternoon, put in an impressive display against Augsburg.

As per Sofascore, his 8.0 match rating was the highest of any player on the pitch, winning a mammoth 14 of his 18 total duels, completing seven of his nine attempted dribbles, and having 105 touches – all of them being the highest on the day.

And after seeing his display, Newcastle fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on their former ace.

Some Newcastle fans bemoaned the fact that former manager Rafa Benitez made a “mistake” in failing to give Mbabu a proper chance and let him go.

As is always the case in football, there are just certain youngsters who either fall through the net, or don’t realise their actual potential until they go somewhere else.

And that’s certainly what’s happened with Mbabu. The Swiss ace has come into his own in recent seasons with Young Boys and now Wolfsburg, and naturally, Newcastle fans look back at their decision to sell him with a sense of regret.

Leicester aren’t giving Marc Albrighton a fair chance this season

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Usurped by a younger model.

That’s the position that Marc Albrighton finds himself in at Leicester City right now.

Albrighton was an integral part of the Leicester City side that won the title back in 2015/16 starting all 38 games (via Transfermarkt). However, he’s been missing out on all the fun of the latest Foxes ‘fairy-tale’ as he’s been reduced to just six appearances so far this term in the league and only one start.

He’s found his place in the side held blocked by Harvey Barnes so far, but does Albrighton have a realistic chance of knocking him out of his spot at some point in the future?

On the chalkboard

It’s a really fascinating one because neither man really dominates the other to such an extent that it’s clear and obvious who should be taking the starting role, taking a look at their stats from this season so far.

In fact it’s so close that the only area that you can give someone a ‘solid’ lead to is Barnes when it comes to his number of shots per game, which will come naturally from playing more minutes (644 to 183 in the league, via WhoScored) and thus having more chances.

At the end of the day it’s really unfair to think that someone who is producing at almost the same rate as Barnes has found himself reduced to the role of a substitute, because he is really nipping at the heels of Barnes to push him for that place in the starting eleven.

With Leicester on such a good run of form at the moment, it’s unlikely that the 21-year-old is going to drop out of the side (if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it), so it’s going to have to take either a big slump in form from Barnes or a devastating injury to give him his place back.

But if you consider the fact Leicester have the league’s top scorer, Jamie Vardy, in their ranks, would they really lose too much of a goal threat by bringing in Albrighton? Arguably not. They may even create more as despite regularly coming off the bench, the £9m-rated winger averages more key passes per game.

On that evidence, there is a reason to suggest he’s being harshly treated by Brendan Rodgers. But that’s the way the cookie seems to crumble. If a less experienced pro is doing well, he tends to get the nod – especially at Leicester.

Sunderland should offer a chance to Ethan Robson due to a variety of factors

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Loan Watch series, which takes a closer look at those players who are aiming to galvanise their careers away from the spotlight of their parent club.

Sunderland have struggled for form since Phil Parkinson took over and a big factor has been the decline in the performance of the midfield.

Jack Ross attempted to strengthen that area of the squad with the signing of George Dobson last summer, but the team looks bereft of leadership in the middle since Lee Cattermole left, and that should cause concern for the new boss.

Neither Dobson nor Max Power have offered enough to the side, and looking at their stats it is little surprise that the Black Cats have struggled for goals in the last few weeks.

The pair have failed to produce a single assist this term, while only Power has scored in the league and the team is struggling as a result.

Watch Sunderland Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Sunderland have scored more than one goal in just one game under Parkinson, and the most recent match against Gillingham suggests there is unlikely to be an improvement any time soon.

They registered just five shots all game – none on target – and though it is an area the club could look to improve upon in January with new recruits, another option they should consider is Ethan Robson.

The 23-year-old has had a taste of first-team action previously at the Stadium of Light, but his 14 appearances mean he is still inexperienced, and therefore he could take some time to adjust to playing regularly.

[ad_pod ]

However, he seems to be enjoying life out on loan at Grimsby currently, and the goalscoring aspect of his game could be of huge benefit to Parkinson.

Robson has scored three goals in seven league games from midfield and if he can add to the creative threat he poses – with just one assist so far – then he would provide an attacking threat from deep that the side lacks.

He is, therefore, a useful option for Parkinson, and since his loan is up in January he could slot into the side and allow funds to be focused on other areas of the squad.

Former Grimsby manager Michael Jolley stated that he has had a “terrific” impact since arriving at Blundell Park, and if Parkinson allows him the same freedom and offers the same encouragement then he could begin to flourish in the north-east.

Tottenham’s scouting of Everton Soares doesn’t fit with Pochettino’s usual thinking

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Tottenham are interested in Gremio’s Everton Soares, according to Sky Sports News.

What’s the word?

Spurs are seemingly keen to add to their attacking threat and have recently been linked with Bruno Fernandes, whilst keeping an eye on the Brazilian.

Chief scout Steve Hitchen has travelled to South America to watch the player in action in the Copa Libertadores semi-final, after he previosuly impressed in the Brazilian Serie A, and also for the national team.

He was part of Tite’s squad which lifted the Copa America during the summer, featuring in every match and even proving pivotal in the final against Peru, with a goal and an assist.

It is little surprise that he has attracted Spurs’ attention, but with Arsenal also reportedly interested it makes the likelihood of a transfer more complicated, particularly as his contract expires in 2023 – and therefore his club is not in a position where they have to consider a sale.

Bad news for Lucas Moura

The Gunners’ interest means Everton’s price could sky-rocket, and considering he is rated at £36m by Transfermarkt, it may not be a deal which makes much sense for Spurs, either from a financial perspective or otherwise.

Tottenham already have numerous forward options to choose from and although Christian Eriksen could depart in January, there is a chance that Everton would suffer from a lack of game time.

Check out a hilarious FIFA Forefiet Challenge with a Watford Ladies pro in the video below…

That is what is currently happening to his compatriot, Lucas Moura.

Pochettino doesn’t seem to favour the 27-year-old, starting him only three times in the league this term and dropping him for the Champions League final, yet the Gremio man seems to offer similar attributes.

Both possess pace and an ability to take on defenders, with Everton averaging 3.1 successful dribbles per game this campaign – and that came at a poorer standard, which means he would likely have a lot to do to win Pochettino’s trust.

Lucas, by comparison, has been poor this season. He has only one assist in seven games and averaged 0.7 key passes, which explains why Pochettino believes he doesn’t offer enough.

With Erik Lamela and Son Heung-min impressing on both flanks against Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday also, there is no real need for Spurs to make another wide addition, and certainly not a player who has averaged just 0.2 successful crosses per game this year.
