Razzaq says he's out of the ICL

Abdul Razzaq, the Pakistan allrounder, says he has been released from his contract with the ICL

Abdul Razzaq: “I am available and willing to play for Pakistan.”•ICL

Abdul Razzaq, the Pakistan allrounder, says he has been released from his contract with the ICL. The news could not be confirmed with the ICL, which on Wednesday released 50-odd players from their contracts, but, if true, Razzaq would qualify for the amnesty announced by the PCB.”I have been released from my contract with the ICL,” Razzaq told Cricinfo. “I am available and willing to play for Pakistan.”It won’t be that simple: Unlike other boards that have announced an umbrella amnesty for players quitting the ICL by May 31, the PCB said it would consider selecting players on a case-by-case basis. “While permitting such players to play cricket, PCB will decide on case-to-case basis the penalties to be imposed and the time period for which they will remain banned,” the PCB said.Though the BCCI has put in place a ‘cooling off’ period of a year – whereby an ex-ICL player will only be eligible to represent India after a year away from the ICL – the PCB in effect, has left the door open for players to return sooner. The stance adopted by the PCB is understandable, given how badly it was affected by the ban on ICL players. Nineteen players from Pakistan signed up with the league, nearly half of whom, can conceivably represent Pakistan still. The defection took away nearly the entire bench strength of the national side. Key among them are the likes of Razzaq and Mohammad Yousuf, and even players such as Imran Nazir, who could well be part of a Pakistan line-up in one of the three formats of the game. The move by various national boards to offer amnesty to the ICL players was prompted by the BCCI’s offer to ICL’s Indian players that was made on April 29. Since then, the Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, New Zealand and South Africa boards have proceeded similarly.

Collingwood calls for 'brave' campaign

England have rediscovered that winning habit, as the Ashes begin to loom, so too does the invidious nature of Collingwood’s three-week tenancy

England captains have been two-a-penny in the past few months, but if Paul Collingwood looked a little nervous as he faced the media on the eve of his return to the role, it was not because he has taken over a sinking ship in the manner of his immediate predecessors, Andrew Strauss and Kevin Pietersen. Quite the opposite in fact. For the first time in a long time, England have rediscovered that winning habit, and as the Ashes begin to loom, so too does the invidious nature of Collingwood’s three-week tenancy. On his watch, England’s precious momentum could conceivably be boosted by a glorious maiden triumph in a major global event. More likely, however, it stands to be dented by another ignominious failure to match the skills and chutzpah of the more established limited-overs nations.Collingwood was at the helm in South Africa two years ago, when England’s only victory in five attempts came against the underdogs of Zimbabwe. With Andrew Strauss stepping aside to let his harder-hitting colleagues take centre stage, Colly’s back in the hot seat, and to judge by these early impressions, he’s finding it hard to inject his words with the right measure of confidence.”We’ve got to be brave to win a tournament like this,” Collingwood told reporters at Lord’s. “We have to have the belief that we can win as a team, but we also have to have belief in our own ability in the middle. Twenty20 cricket is not an exact science, so you have to think on your feet in the middle. Sometimes it only takes one person, and we’ve got a lot of matchwinners, so I really do believe we can surprise a few people. I’m not going to say we are going to win it, but we have to believe we can win it.”Ever since England’s near-miss at the 1992 World Cup, their one-day cricket has struggled to cope with the national preference for the five-day version, and in this summer of all summers the disparity seems even more stark than ever – no other national captain, for instance, would have to field questions on the eve of such a prestigious competition about a star player’s fitness for a still-distant Test series – as Collingwood did of Andrew Flintoff.”Freddie is a world-class player, simple as that,” said Collingwood. “He’ll be coming back into the England side, and he’ll be welcomed back because we’ll need him 100% come the Ashes. But right now we’re concentrating on a major World Cup tournament. If we go all the way and win it, it’s certainly going to give us some major confidence, but this is a one-off. The Ashes is something we’ve been building up to for a long time now. The next three weeks shouldn’t affect the way we approach that.”It shouldn’t affect anything … but as Collingwood’s demeanour suggested, it just might. “A lot of our momentum comes from results, because when you’re winning things are very easy,” he said. “It’s [difficult] when the losses come along, and we will have losses in this kind of tournament, that’s the nature of Twenty20 cricket. But what we’ve got is a strong team ethos, and it’s not just me that has to drive that, we’ll have to filter that team ethos through to the new guys. They know what is expected of them and the England team.”For the second time in two Twenty20 tournaments, England’s clutch of new boys could make the difference between success and failure. In 2007, the selectors took a punt on the likes of Darren Maddy, Jeremy Snape, Chris Schofield and James Kirtley – men who had performed with aplomb in the domestic Twenty20 Cup, but who, to a greater or lesser degree, had been found out at the highest level. Sure enough, the experiment failed. This time, however, Collingwood has far more faith in the men at his disposal. Of the two uncapped members of the original squad, one – Graham Napier – has just returned from an educational stint with the IPL, while the other – Eoin Morgan – justified his call-up with an exceptionally inventive innings of 161 for Middlesex at Kent in the Friends Provident Trophy earlier this month. Despite the innate fatalism that tends to accompany English one-day campaigns, there are genuine reasons why the story could be different this time.”You look at Ravi Bopara at the top of the order, he’s going to be crucial for us, and Stuart Broad and Jimmy Anderson have developed as bowlers,” said Collingwood. “We have players who are in crucial positions who have gained a lot of international experience since 2007 and I think they’re better players now.”There are obviously concerns when you meet up as a team that the new guys will not be brought into the side as well as they could be,” he said. “This time around that isn’t a concern, because I think we have a really strong culture in the side, and the guys get on really well. The boys have got the skills and are very confident, and we just want to take that out into the middle.”Whether the brave talk translates into brave deeds, however, remains to be seen. A fear-free Dutch team, bolstered by the IPL star Dirk Nannes and Essex’s uncompromising allrounder, Ryan ten Doeschate, await in the tournament opener, and then it’s over to Pakistan, beaten finalists in 2007, and a side who are just glad to be back on the international stage after the horrors of Lahore.”Playing at home could be an added pressure but we’re not taking it like that,” said Collingwood. “We’ve got an advantage in many ways, we know what the wickets are all about here, and we’re very excited about playing in front of our own crowds. No England cricket team has won an ICC tournament before so we have a three-week period here for us as a team to hopefully put that right.”

Atlético-GO bate a Chapecoense de virada na Arena Condá e respira

MatériaMais Notícias

O Atlético-GO está vivo no Brasileirão.

No entanto, o time cansou e viu o Atlético-GO crescer na partida.

Northerns romp to second successive win

A round-up of the second round of matches of the 2008-09 Logan Cup

Cricinfo staff05-Apr-2009All-round efforts from Raymond Price and Graeme Cremer helped Northerns crush Westerns by 269 runs at the Alexandra Sports Club. Half centuries by in-form Cremer (74) and captain Elton Chigumbura (53) saw Northerns score 300 after electing to bat. Cremer was in a valiant mood, hitting 10 boundaries during his 96-ball stay. Admire Manyumwa then tore into the batsmen during Westerns’ reply, picking up 5 for 15 as they folded for 158. Despite having Northerns tottering on the brink of collapse at 96 for 7 during the second innings, Westerns failed to capitalize as gritty knocks from Chigumbura (94) and Price (77) lifted Northerns to 267. Chigumbura’s 160-ball innings comprised 12 boundaries and three sixes. There was no way back for Westerns, while chasing 410, after losing six wickets in the afternoon session on day three. Ray Price completed the formalities in the 72nd over, ending with 6 for 69 with Cremer providing good support with 4 for 36.Centrals and Easterns had to be content with split points after their clash at the Old Hararians. Easterns were expected to remain in the runs against a Centrals side that was beaten within three days by Northerns in the previous round. But it was a disappointing effort from Easterns in the first innings, after they chose to bat. It was largely Forster Mutizwa’s composed 60 that pushed them to 255. But a five-for from Douglas Hondo ensured the lead stayed with Easterns. Apart from opener Bothwell Chapungu, who scored 85, hitting 13 fours and a six, none of the batsmen looked confident as Centrals ended three runs short. Brighton Muguchi’s 5 for 115 during Easterns’ second-innings looked to have swung the momentum towards Centrals, but a 111-run stand for the eighth wicket between Mutizwa (52) and Timycen Maruma (66) helped Easterns declare on 331. The target of 335 proved to be too tall an ask for Centrals who finally finished on 176 for 4, anchored by Malcolm Waller’s patient 68.

Lahore casts IPL shadow in New Zealand

Tuesday’s terror attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore has heightened anxiety among the New Zealand players over touring India for next month’s IPL

Sidharth Monga in Wellington04-Mar-2009Fletcher warns against playing in IndiaDuncan Fletcher has cautioned England’s players against playing the IPL, saying some types of terrorist attacks can be carried out more easily in India than Pakistan.”The traffic is often so bad in the big [Indian] cities where a lot of the cricket is played that the coach can move along only slowly at times, which turns it into a sitting duck for terrorists,” he wrote in his column. “There’s nothing stopping a tuk-tuk pulling up alongside and detonating a bomb. “If I were one of the England guys who signed up for the IPL, I would be concerned.” Several leading England players, including Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff, have signed lucrative contracts to play in this season’s IPL, which is scheduled to start next month.Tuesday’s terror attack on the Sri Lankan team in Lahore has led to a heightened anxiety among the New Zealand players over touring India for next month’s IPL, with eight players expected to feature in the tournament which runs from April 10-May 24. Their concerns over playing in India existed, it turns out, even before last night’s incident.New Zealand allrounder Jacob Oram said the events in Pakistan have only worsened the state. “Definitely after what happened in Mumbai late last year, and what happened last night, it keeps raising questions,” said Oram, who is part of the Chennai Super Kings squad in the IPL along with Stephen Fleming.”Before that I wouldn’t have had any worries. Now, though, questions have got to be asked. Heath Mills [the New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association chief] and the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations [FICA] are looking into security measures. Last year the IPL was amazing, with all the fanfare, but now reality has hit hard.”Heath Mills told Cricinfo that the New Zealand players were more concerned about the security measures and that he had received calls from a couple of them even before the Lahore attack, enquiring about the security arrangements in the IPL.”Our players don’t have any direct dealings with the BCCI or the IPL,” Mills said. “The most important thing right now would be for the BCCI and IPL to deal with players directly, and also with FICA. That will give them a reassurance about the security situation.”FICA and the NZCPA are likely to play an important role in any decision regarding the IPL. Although the NZCPA and New Zealand Cricket (NZC) can only make recommendations, it is unlikely the players will take individual calls.”We back our player association and NZC to make the decision,” Oram said. “NZC have been great so far whenever we have toured dicey countries. They have left it up to players. That decision is made with friends and family and wives in mind. Until a tour like that comes around, I wouldn’t be sticking my neck out. But I will be thinking twice.”He said it was a relief, though, that NZC was looking into the Pakistan tour – scheduled for later this year. “That takes a decision out of a player’s hand,” he said. “That’s always tough when an individual has to take his decision. So you can see which individual has said yes or no, and it can isolate guys and set them aside from others. For NZC to say no straightaway, with the backing of NZCPA, puts us out of focus.”The IPL has definitely opened financial doors that you can only dream of. But I am married now. It would take a lot for me to turn a blind eye to what’s going on. I know the player associations around the world are looking into the security arrangement. I read that Lalit Modi had got the security beefed up. If that’s the case, and if I am assured about the security, I won’t say no just yet. If it gets worse, you have got to take a look at it.”Aaron Klee, Jesse Ryder’s manager, said though touring India was not quite the same as touring Pakistan, there were a few concerns about the batsman turning out for the Bangalore Royal Challengers.”I haven’t spoken to Jesse as yet, but for me personally, I am pretty relaxed at this moment,” Klee said. “But I wouldn’t be just jumping on the plane to India since I will be sitting with the players’ association people and the New Zealand Cricket officials to understand the scene better.”

Kirmani questions Dhoni's keeping technique

Kirmani said Dhoni lacked the “copybook basics” of a keeper and said the flaws were not attracting attention because the Indian team has been in top form in recent months

Syed Kirmani, the former Indian wicketkeeper, has criticised the wicketkeeping technique of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. He said Dhoni lacked the “copybook basics” of a wicketkeeper and said the flaws were not attracting attention because the Indian team has been in top form in recent months.”He is improving with every match, though he is not technically sound behind the wicket.” quoted Kirmani as saying. “He doesn’t have the copybook basics of a wicketkeeper.Dhoni does not have the natural instincts of an athlete, which is very important for a wicketkeeper.”Kirmani, 59, played 88 Tests for India in a 12-year career that started in 1976 and is one of India’s greatest wicketkeepers. He was also concerned about Dhoni’s long-term future as a wicketkeeper. “No player remains the same after four years. The agility and reflex of a player diminishes with age,” said Kirmani. “The body and muscles start wearing out. And Dhoni is playing all three forms of the game round the year.”Kirmani said that at 27, it was too late for Dhoni to modify his technique. “These things have to be done at the grassroot level. Not only Dhoni, I can’t change the technique of a Parthiv Patel or a Dinesh Karthik.”This is not the first time Kirmani has found fault with Dhoni’s keeping technique. In 2006, he had questioned Dhoni’s tendency to stand on his heels while waiting for the ball instead of being on his toes.
