The Verdict: Good squad addition

It can be easy to turn your nose up at the thought of Leeds signing a Championship player, but Swift is in a rich vein of form and he could provide Marcelo Bielsa with greater squad depth.

His aforementioned goal and assist contribution is highly impressive and could give the Whites an added threat in the final third, something they have perhaps lacked this season with 2020/21 top scorer Patrick Bamford being laid low with injury. Also, at the age 26, the Reading maestro still has time to improve even further.

Much like Leeds-linked winger Lewis O’Brien, Swift might not necessarily come in as a key player straight away but he could be a handy addition in January, being described as ‘fantastic’ by Veljko Paunovic recently.

Steven Gerrard is intent on reuniting with Rangers left-back Borna Barisic at Aston Villa, according to The Mirror (via Daily Record).

The lowdown

According to WhoScored, the 29-year-old has been Rangers’ fourth-best performer this season, averaging a rating of 7.16/10.

He has 2.3 chances per 90 minutes in the Scottish Premiership, second only to full-back colleague James Tavernier (3.9) at Ibrox. He exceeds every Aston Villa player for that metric, with Douglas Luiz leading the way in the Midlands with 1.6 key passes per game.

Croatia team-mate Josip Brekalo has hailed Barisic’s performances as ‘excellent’, describing him as a ‘high-quality player’.

He isn’t the only Gers player with whom Villa have been linked since Gerrard took over, with Glen Kamara also reported to be a target if the 41-year-old chooses to raid his former club.

The Mirror claimed (via Daily Record) that Gerrard would like to improve upon his existing options at left-back.

The Wanderers in Johannesburg has lost its fixtures from England’s tour later this year following the suspension of its international status after a dispute between the Gauteng Cricket Board (GCB) and Cricket South Africa (CSA).The GCB had levelled allegations of mismanagement of the 2009 IPL at CSA chief executive Gerald Majola, the BCCI and the tournament organisers soon after the league ended. Speaking in an interview with Radio Prague International, Czech football pundit Jiri Hosek has dropped an enticing claim involving West Ham-linked billionaire Daniel Kretinsky.

Kretinsky’s personal fortune is said to be more than £3 billion and so it isn’t infeasible to believe that West Ham could see a cash injection for transfers if talks succeed.

Speaking to Radio Prague, Czech source and football pundit Hosek has made an enticing claim as he backs this big news out of West Ham – going on to say that fans should be ‘relaxed’ about the billionaire’s reputation as an owner.

“There are some very dramatic stories being told behind the curtains about his involvement in choosing the line-up, the coaches and discussing the team’s tactics,” he explained.

“West Ham fans should be very relaxed about the reputation of Daniel Křetinský, if we are talking about this in comparison with the recent acquisition of Newcastle United by the Saudi Royal Fund.

“There is a very transparent record of Mr Křetínský’s fortune, so we can say that he is not one of these dodgy Central and Eastern European tycoons whose sources of money we can’t track.

“This is perhaps an optimistic note for West Ham United fans.”

The Verdict: More good news…

Club investments or part ownership from relatively unknown overseas parties will always arguably strike a degree of uncertainty, so this claim on Kretinsky’s background should indeed come as a positive for Irons supporters.

Even if the 46-year-old doesn’t go on to buy a majority stake in the club and take over from GSB, Kretinsky’s cash injection would be one major benefit as manager David Moyes aims to maintain his side’s fight at the very top level.

The Czech pundit’s claims should come as particularly good news for Irons supporters given the chaos currently unfolding on Tyneside, with Unai Emery raising questions over their new owners’ direction when snubbing the club this week, via The Chronicle.

Fonseca first established himself as a top-class manager during a hugely prosperous three-year spell at Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk.

Between 2016 and 2019, the 48-year-old claimed three successive league titles and three successive domestic cups, earning him a move to Serie A outfit AS Roma.

The highly regarded tactician transformed the capital club into a genuine force in European competition once again during his time at the helm, overseeing an exciting and entertaining style of play at the Stadio Olimpico.

Speaking to Tifo Football, The Athletic’s James Horncastle declared: “I’d put them with Atalanta and Sassuolo as the league’s entertainers,” while Alex Stewart described his style as “exciting.”

In fact, despite their Europa League exit last season at the semi-final stage, Portuguese journalist Alex Goncalves still backed Fonseca to enjoy a big career.

He tweeted: “It’s a bad result for Paulo Fonseca today, a 6-2 defeat to Manchester United. His managerial CV is exceptional, & his managerial ability matches it, but his time at Roma may be coming to an end. A talented manager who plays stylish football likely to be available this summer.”
