Badrinath makes 29th first-class century

A round-up of the fifth round of Ranji Trophy’s Group B matches on December 1, 2012

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Dec-2012
ScorecardIgnored for the ongoing Test series against England, S Badrinath made his 29th first-class century as Tamil Nadu ended on 235 for 3 against Vidarbha in Nagpur. Arun Karthik and Abhinav Mukund got starts but were dismissed by Shrikant Wagh. Badrinath and Dinesh Karthik then put on 133 for the third wicket to build the innings. Dinesh Karthik made 49 off 147 deliveries before he was caught behind but India Under-19 allrounder Baba Aparajith ensured Tamil Nadu finished only three down. Badrinath faced 190 balls for his unbeaten 101 and hit 14 fours and a six.
ScorecardAnkit Rajpoot, 18, playing only his second first-class game, took four wickets to help Uttar Pradesh dismiss Baroda for 254 on a Green Park pitch with lots of grass on it. Suresh Raina asked Baroda to bat and the visitors lost their openers with just nine on the board. When Rajpoot had Rakesh Solanki edging to the slip cordon, Baroda were struggling at 83 for 4. Ambati Rayudu and Kedar Devdhar added 104 to steady the innings but Rajpoot broke the stand by having the Baroda captain caught behind for 85. Devdhar under-edged a googly from Piyush Chawla to the wicketkeeper and the innings soon ended on 254. The UP openers batted out six overs without any damage.
ScorecardOdisha’s fairytale run continued when they had Maharashtra seven down for 264 in Sambalpur. Medium-pacer Basant Mohanty hardly gave anything away, and had figures of 22-13-35-2. Five other Odisha bowlers picked up a wicket each. Wasted starts were the story of the day for Maharashtra, with two batsmen, Harshad Khadiwale and Chirag Khurana, going in their forties, and Ankit Bawne falling for 51. Kedar Jadhav, who had made 327 against UP earlier, motored to 33 off 33 before being dismissed. Maharashtra were 139 for 5 when Jadhav fell but Bawne and Khurana helped stage a recovery.
ScorecardFast bowler Parvinder Awana took three wickets as Delhi reduced neighbours Haryana to 219 for 6 in Lahli, near Rohtak. The Lahli pitch has acquired a reputation for being a batsman’s nightmare but the surface for this game was bare without any grass. Rahul Dewan and Nitin Saini (45) put on 69 for the first wicket before Awana struck. Sunny Singh and Abhimanyu Khod did cause much damage. Awana did, with the second new ball, taking out Sachin Rana and Amit Mishra leg-before. No. 5 batsman Rahul Dalal remained unbeaten on 42.

In-form Durham finished their campaign with a fifth win in six games after beating Sussex by five wickets with a day to spare. Michael Richardson struck 58 and Ben Stokes a quickfire 45 as Durham chased down their victory target of 165 after dismissing Sussex for 180 in their second innings.Despite their superb form at the end of the season, Durham had to settle for a sixth-placed finish in Division One after a miserable start to the campaign which saw them fail to win any of their first 10 matches. Sussex, meanwhile, remain 10 points ahead of them and will hang on to the fourth-place prize money unless Nottinghamshire win tomorrow.Durham skipper Paul Collingwood, who took over the four-day captaincy in mid-season, hailed the spirit in his side: “I couldn’t have asked for anything more in the second half of the season. We were in a dire situation but the players have shown a lot of pride and determination. Every single one of them has made a crucial contribution at some point.”Durham seamer Chris Rushworth took the last four Sussex wickets in the morning to achieve career-best figures for the third time this season, finishing with 5 for 38. Luke Wells failed to add to his overnight 51, falling to the 16th ball of the day when he edged Stokes to Phil Mustard, who claimed his 500th first-class victim. Rushworth did the rest, swinging the ball both ways to claim two lbw verdicts and a gully catch before last man Monty Panesar lobbed a catch to mid-on.Durham needed 165 to win and Mark Stoneman got them off to a fluent start, but Keaton Jennings made only one before fending a steeply-rising ball from Lewis Hatchett to second slip. Hatchett also skidded one through Stoneman’s back-foot defensive shot to bowl him for 24 before Stokes emerged at 34 for 2 and immediately cracked him for three fours.Stokes made 45 off 49 balls before lifting Panesar to long-on, then Richardson took over. He pulled Hatchett for his fifth four to reach 50 off 123 balls just before Dale Benkenstein was bowled by Panesar with 27 needed. The target was down to 15 when Hatchett straightened one off the pitch to have Richardson lbw, but previous captain Mustard easily picked off the remaining runs in partnership with his successor Collingwood.”We had a bit of a chuckle as we came off,” Collingwood said. “Phil has been magnificent and the struggle in the first half of the season was not down to his captaincy. It was a blip and it was a shock to us all, but I think the future is very bright.”

Durham profit from Surrey gamble

Surrey’s bold decision at the toss of their key match against one of their biggest relegation rivals may prove a turning point in their battle to remain in Division One

Cricket often rewards those who are prepared to gamble at crucial times, but Surrey’s bold decision at the toss of their key match against one of their biggest relegation rivals may prove a turning point in their battle to remain in Division One. Choosing to bat first in bowler-friendly conditions, the scoreboard would suggest it backfired spectacularly to hand Durham a considerable advantage.Dismissed for only 129 in 48.3 overs on a wicket that was damp enough for groundstaff to be still mopping up minutes before the start, the decision to bat suggested a major error of judgement. Yet after losing four wickets in reply, it took an undefeated 61-run stand between Paul Collingwood and Dale Benkenstein to restore Durham’s authority before the close.Surrey, lying just 15 points ahead of bottom-placed Durham at the start of the game, will need to mount an early recovery, even on a ground where the average first innings total this summer has been 153.”We looked carefully at the games that have been played here this year and they’ve been low-scoring affairs,” Chris Adams, Surrey’s director of cricket, explained.”The two innings of the game that have looked the hardest to bat have been the first and the fourth. It was a brave move when pretty much everything about the wicket is saying bowl first but if you look at the results here the fourth innings has been hellish to bat in. It was a case of which innings we wanted to take on, the first or the fourth, and the general consensus in the side was ‘let’s be brave’ rather than take on the fourth innings.”Bold it may have been but from the moment Durham’s potent seam attack began to make inroads, it became clear Surrey were unlikely to profit from their gamble. Already three down in the final over before lunch, their cause was not helped by the untimely run out of Jason Roy, as Mark Stoneman threw down the stumps from square leg.Ben Stokes, Durham’s allrounder, underlined his progress as a bowler this summer since being given more responsibility and bowled with pace, generated swing, and demonstrated his highly effective yorker to finish with 4 for 40. Chris Rushworth, another who has benefitted from more opportunities, was not far behind with 3 for 36 to take his tally to 22 Championship victims in his fifth match.Beginning their reply on a wicket that remained difficult to overcome, Durham lost Stoneman before tea when he picked out midwicket and then lost three wickets in 10 overs immediately after the interval. That included the dismissal of Keaton Jennings, a left-handed batsman making a good impression on his Championship debut.A former captain of South Africa’s Under-19 side and son of the former South Africa coach Ray Jennings, Keaton qualifies through his Sunderland-born mother and showed a discipline and application ideal for such conditions. He batted for an hour and a half for his 23 before being run out from slip looking to steal a quick single. At 58 for 4, it was by no means certain Durham would secure a lead but Collingwood and Benkenstein used all their experience of such situations to guide their side within sight of a lead. By the close, batting was looking easier after a day of sunshine and they had high hopes for pushing on for a big lead.”We’ve got them out for a low total and hopefully these two at the crease can kick on and get a big lead,” Stokes said. “They have got us out of a tricky situation there, after losing three wickets very quickly, so for them to dig in and stick it out like they did was fantastic for us. The pitch has got a bit better since this morning, so hopefully that will also be in our favour.”That was certainly the view of David Hughes, the former Lancashire captain turned pitch inspector, who was alerted by the number of wickets falling and inspected at tea. He reported back what most in the ground suspected, that good bowling had exploited seamer-friendly conditions to provide Durham with a platform for victory.

Ashraf downs Derbyshire

18-Jun-2012
ScorecardMoin Ashraf was the star of the show as Yorkshire claimed their second Friends Life t20 victory against a Derbyshire side who lost for the first time in the North Group.Ashraf, the 20-year-old pace bowler, took 4 for 18 in a 41-run victory under the Derby floodlights after Gary Ballance had launched a late onslaught with an unbeaten 47 off 35 balls to lift Yorkshire to 150 for 5.Former Yorkshire spinner David Wainwright had bowled superbly to take 2 for 14 but Ballance struck three sixes as 32 came from the last two overs and the Falcons crumbled to 109 with Rich Pyrah claiming three for 21.After the teams observed a minute’s silence in memory of Surrey batsman Tom Maynard, Yorkshire’s innings started well, stalling briefly when Wainwright came into the attack before finishing with a flourish as Ballance finally found his range to take the total past 150.Although Phil Jacques went cheaply, Andrew Gale was looking dangerous until Wainwright removed his former skipper with his second ball when the opener got under a drive and was caught at deep mid off for 39 off 26 balls.Wainwright landed another body blow two balls later when he found some sharp turn to have South African batsman David Miller caught at slip and Yorkshire’s scoring rate dipped dramatically with only 39 coming from eight overs.Joe Root was caught behind for 36 trying to reverse sweep Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and when Pyrah was bowled off his pads, the visitors were 107 for 5 in the 17th over. Ballance had struggled to get the ball away but after swinging Rana for the first six of the innings, he pulled Mark Turner for two more as 17 came off the penultimate over.Rana bowled Ballance with a no-ball that gave Yorkshire a free hit from the final delivery and Ballance took advantage by hitting his third four to give his side a competitive total.Derbyshire’s chase was starting to gain momentum when Mitchell Starc removed his fellow Australian Usman Khawaja when a top-edged pull ended in the gloves of Gerard Brophy and Ashraf trapped Wes Durston lbw in the next over.Ashraf then bowled Wayne Madsen with another straight and full ball and the force was with Yorkshire when a drive was deflected into the stumps to run out Dan Redfern. With the asking rate climbing to above nine an over, Ross Whiteley was bowled swinging wildly at Pyrah who yorked Chesney Hughes and had Tom Poynton caught at long off before Ashraf cleaned up the tail.

Worcs take slender lead after Jones' six

It is never wise to pronounce judgment on the performance of one batting line-up, however dismal, until their opponents have responded. Yet Worcestershire’s dismissal for 130, giving them an advantage of 12, made Nottinghamshire’s paltry effort look no better.Poor returns from their top order undermined them almost at every turn last year, undoing their hopes of defending the County Championship title they had won in 2010, which left their supporters disappointed even if it confirmed to others that their victory had somewhat overstated their quality. The winter arrivals of Michael Lumb, experienced and yet still hungry, and the prodigiously talented James Taylor, captain of the England Lions, were supposed to put that right and in time they might. Yet evidence of that was not obviously visible after Worcestershire won the toss and put them in, the loss of opener Alex Hales to the fourth ball of the day setting in train an array of poorly judged strokes, interspersed with a few decent balls, that led them to a total only one run better than their worst of 2011.It was not what Chris Read, the Nottinghamshire captain, had in mind when he boldly announced that he had the best Nottinghamshire batting line-up since 2005, when they won the title under the leadership of Stephen Fleming, the New Zealand captain, and three batsmen — Jason Gallian, David Hussey and Darren Bicknell — each scored more than 1100 runs.Conditions were plainly not easy. Yet on a cloudy, chilly morning that had been preceded by two days of rain, nobody can have expected anything different and in the event Lumb and Taylor were merely new names in an otherwise entirely familiar script. In defence of Lumb, whose last memory of Trent Bridge was a double hundred here for Hampshire in 2009 (albeit August), the ball that undid him was not at all bad, David Lucas, the Worcestershire debutant who began his career here, drawing him forward to defend against a ball that left him very late. But Taylor, perhaps, might consider on reflection that he could have been more patient. Arriving at 17 for 2, he dispatched his sixth ball to the fence past point but, trying the same shot again, could only find the fielder there two balls later.Taylor was one of six victims for Richard Jones, at 26 the junior member of Worcestershire’s seam attack. The tireless Alan Richardson, who will be 37 next month, may have lost one fellow warhorse with the retirement of Matt Mason but 33-year-old Lucas is another who thrives on cold April mornings.Jones was the chief beneficiary of Nottinghamshire’s carelessness, finishing with 6 for 32.Nottinghamshire’s embarrassment could have been deeper. Neil Edwards, given the nod to open ahead of Karl Turner, was unlucky, well forward when victim of an lbw decision that would probably not have been given only a short time ago, but otherwise only Paul Franks, with 16 seasons’ experience of playing on these wickets, emerged from the wreckage with his head held high, finishing unbeaten on 51.It was an opportunity for Worcestershire, who lost their first six matches last year, to register some early defiance after again being installed as relegation favourites. Yet their batting proved scarcely less fragile, even if, in their case, the wickets were more down to good bowling. The Australian Michael Klinger, shaped up neatly for a while on debut, suggesting he might provide an innings to stand out. But he fell for 29 and Worcestershire seldom looked good thereafter for anything more than a slender lead as Ben Phillips, who struggled to make an impact last season, justified his selection for the place made available by the injury to Darren Pattinson by taking his first three Championship wickets for Nottinghamshire.
