Essex and Surrey claim narrow wins

A round-up of all the action from the Clydesdale Bank 40

21-May-2010Essex beat Holland by just one run as the hosts came close to causing a huge Clydesdale Bank 40 upset in Amstelveen. Set 219 runs to win, the Dutch finished on 217 for 6 as Eric Szwarczynski provided the bedrock of their brave chase. Despite seeing Nick Statham (five) and Michael Dighton (nine) depart cheaply to leave the hosts 37 for two, the South Africa-born right-hander remained unflappable as he fashioned a recovery.A Chris Schofield half-century guided Surrey to a two-wicket win over Glamorgan in their Group A game under the Swalec Stadium floodlights. Surrey were set 224 to win but looked in trouble until Schofield and Gareth Batty rescued their side from 126 for 6 in the 26th over with a 53-run partnership.

Romano: Spurs close in on Amrabat

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the signing of Sofyan Amrabat this January transfer window…

What’s the word?

Italian journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano delivered a fresh update on Spurs’ pursuit of the Fiorentina midfielder, who is currently excelling for Morocco at the Africa Cup of Nations, very early on Wednesday morning.

He said:

“Sofyan Amrabat to Tottenham, advanced but not a done deal yet. [Antonio] Conte and [Fabio] Paratici both want him – he’s also doing great at AFCON.

“But Spurs are waiting to complete [Tanguy] Ndombele deal [to Paris Saint-Germain] before Amrabat (loan with buy option). Player side, not a problem: he only wants Spurs.”

Closing in

At the moment, this would be the Lilywhites’ first signing this month as a swoop for Adama Traore continues to rumble on without much success.

It appears as if Conte’s attentions have quickly turned to sorting out the engine room because you don’t make the likes of Ndombele, Dele Alli and Giovani Lo Celso all available for an exit if you’re not going to try and reinforce such a key position, especially with less than five days of the window remaining.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/tottenham-hotspur-thfc-spurs-transfer-rumours-gossip-conte-paratici-levy-updates” title=”Read the latest Spurs news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

Amrabat isn’t a signing that is going to thrill much of the Spurs fanbase but if the Italian head coach wants him, then he must be backed.

The 25-year-old midfielder has been restricted to only 211 minutes in the Serie A this season but has featured in three full 90-minute games for his country in Group C and the round of 16 at AFCON.

Conte has lacked someone capable of driving the ball forward from midfield and he could well find that in Amrabat. Of the 39 players to have attempted 150 or more dribbles since the start of the 2019/20 campaign,  only one player (Ismael Bennacer, 79.6%) has managed a better dribble success rate than the Viola enforcer (70.3%), per WhoScored.

That is also above every single one of Spurs’ current central options with Oliver Skipp leading the way on 66.7% and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg not too far behind on 62.2%. Ndombele – who is supposed to be the ideal fit for the role – sits down at 55%, which is rather telling.

He is also solid at delivering long balls and is aggressive in the tackle, so whilst his lack of game time is a worry, there are certainly credentials there that make him fit for Conte, who must be absolutely delighted that a deal is very close. to happening.

Somewhat of a perfect signing for the Spurs boss, the north London outfit are in for one busy few days ahead of Monday’s deadline.

The controversy surrounding Shoaib Malik, the former Pakistan captain, appears to have moved a step closer to resolution on Wednesday with the announcement that he had filed for divorce from Ayesha Siddiqui, whom he had married seven years ago, and her family saying they would withdraw a police complaint filed against him. This paves the way for Malik to go ahead with his marriage to Sania Mirza, the Indian tennis player, in Hyderabad next week. The announcement – which followed five days of negotiations – was made at a press conference at Ayesha’s house and attended by representatives of the Mirza and Siddiqui families, though the three principals were absent. Shafi, Sania’s uncle, said the complaint against Malik would be withdrawn – an application has already been filed with the police – and in turn he would pay Ayesha maintenance under Islamic law.”I am very happy about it”, Ayesha’s mother said. “All community leaders have come to him (Shoaib) to do the settlement and he has done it. Finally justice has been done to my daughter.”On Monday, Hyderabad police said they had registered a complaint of cheating, harassment and intimidation filed by Ayesha against Malik.Malik admitted, at a public appearance the same day, that he had married Ayesha but claimed it was done on the phone, he had never met his wife and that the photographs sent to him did not match the person who later claimed to be his wife.

NUFC: Magpies keen on Milenkovic

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are now plotting a move to sign the central defender to bolster their squad this month.

The report claims that it will take £32m for the Italian side to part ways with him, whilst Southampton’s Jan Bednarek is also mentioned as an option.

Vidic 2.0

Eddie Howe could find his own Nemanja Vidic in a deal to sign the Serbian colossus, as the Serie A beast has previously been compared to his compatriot.

In reaction to those comparisons, Milenkovic said: “It is magnificent to be compared to the likes of Vidic and I have to stay humble with both feet firmly on the ground.

“Vidic was one hell of a player while I am in the fledgeling stage of my career and hence I have to keep working hard in order to climb that mountain. Krstajic’s praise means so much because it’s an impetus to keep improving.”

Pol Lirola previously lauded the defender’s talents as “extraordinary” and his statistics in Italy back up that claim as he has consistently impressed.

In the Serie A this season, he has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.13. He has won an excellent 71% of his duels overall in the division, making 3.1 tackles and interceptions per game along with 3.2 clearances – as per SofaScore.

This shows that he has the ability to perform consistently to a high standard at the top level. Therefore, he could improve Newcastle’s defence and hand them a greater chance of keeping clean sheets and picking up points in the Premier League, aiding their bid to avoid relegation.

At the age of 24, he also has plenty of time left to develop and progress further as a player. This means that he could fulfil his potential and become the new Vidic and end his career as a Premier League icon by delivering the goods over the course of a number of years at Newcastle.

Therefore, Howe must ensure that the club are able to match the £32m price tag Fiorentina have placed on his head to get a deal done in the coming days. The comparisons to Vidic and his performance data in the Serie A suggest that he could be a strong addition to the team and they must work hard to bring him to St. James’ Park.

West Ham trying to negotiate Barbosa deal

Speaking to Give Me Sport, journalist Pete O’Rourke has shared some transfer news out of West Ham United involving Flamengo striker Gabriel Barbosa.

The Lowdown: Sky Sports break news…

Earlier this January, Sky Sports were the first to break news on West Ham’s attempts to sign Barbosa with reporter Dharmesh Sheth even claiming the player was eager on a move to England.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Manager David Moyes has earmarked the signing of a striker as one of his transfer priorities before January 31, coming over a year after they sold club record signing Sebastien Haller to Ajax.

Jamaica international Michail Antonio, as things stand, remains Moyes’ only natural senior frontman with O’Rourke now sharing an update as they remain in negotiations for Barbosa.

The Latest: West Ham attempting negotiations…

According to his information, West Ham are currently attempting to negotiate a loan deal with the option to make his move permanent – but the Brazil striker’s club are holding firm.

“They’re still in and around Gabigol but the problem is Flamengo would prefer a straight-up sale for the Brazilian striker,” he said to GMS.

“West Ham are trying to negotiate a loan deal with an option to buy and so far Flamengo are not interested in that, so it’s a bit of a stalemate at the minute.”

The Verdict: Get it done?

The 25-year-old scored a phenomenal 29 goals over 2021 in all competitions, adding to his impressive career tally of 129, and we believe West Ham could be striking a prolific signing if they can agree a move.

As both clubs continue to lock horns in talks, concessions and compromises must be made as manager Moyes seeks to finally end his side’s long, drawn out search for an alternative frontman.

Former Premier League boss Alex McLeish believes Barbosa could be worth it, telling Football Insider the Brazilian has ‘ticks all the boxes’ to be a success in east London.

As the January deadline looms, the Irons and recruitment chief Rob Newman may have to speed up their discussions.

Alan Myers reveals Everton transfer update

Everton have now made three signings during the first two weeks of the January transfer window, securing deals for Nathan Patterson, Vitaliy Mykolenko and Anwar El Ghazi, but will the club bring in any further reinforcements in the remainder of the month?

What’s the word?

Journalist Alan Myers has taken to his Twitter replies to reveal his thoughts on the possibility of more signings at Goodison Park during January after an Everton fan asked him whether they will see more players coming into the club after the confirmation of El Ghazi’s loan move on Thursday evening.

Myers simply responded: “Don’t know but would guess one or two”

With a right-back, a left-back and a winger secured, Rafael Benitez still has plenty of time to add more players in key positions where the Toffees have been struggling over the first half of the season.

Fans will be buzzing

Everton fans have had to endure an abysmal first half of the season, with the Merseyside club only taking five wins from 18 games so far, and many fans have made no secret of their disgruntlement at what they have experienced so far under Benitez.

The owner Farhad Moshiri and his reckless spending habits have been causing consternation at the club too, which has left them in an delicate situation regarding Financial Fair Play that’s set to hinder their ability to spend money without selling players first.

With protests having been planned, some supporters booing the manager and players at Goodison Park, as well as some leaving after conceding early in the first half of games, many Toffees fans have made it clear that they’re not happy and want change at the club.

Therefore. adding new players with fresh legs and fresh perspective could help to put the club in good stead to get results, climb the table and win over an unhappy fan base.

Benitez will be hoping that his new signings can showcase some of the improvements they can make in their clash with Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday, with El Ghazi available to start and Patterson and Mykolenko possibly both being settled in, having each had the best part of two weeks as Everton players.

If they can make an early impact, Myers’ suggestion that the inbound January business may not be done yet could have the Goodison Park faithful buzzing with excitement.
