West Ham a contender for Kondogbia

West Ham United have joined the race to sign Atletico Madrid midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, according to reports in Spain.

The lowdown

Kondogbia, 29, joined Atletico from Valencia less than 18 months ago for a fee of £13.5million (which remains his estimated Transfermarkt value).

He has just over two years left on the £107,000-per-week contract he signed on his arrival at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Kondogbia, who’s started four of the last six games following his return from a muscle injury, is predominantly a defensive midfielder but he can also operate as a centre-back.

A summer transfer ‘revolution’ could apparently take place at Atletico as a result of their disappointing title defence. They currently sit fourth in La Liga, a full 15 points behind pace-setting city rivals Real Madrid.

The latest

Diego Simeone is reportedly reluctant to let Kondogbia leave, but interested clubs are queuing up.

‘The siren songs have already begun’ from the Premier League, with West Ham one of the most recent additions to the ‘list of candidates’.

Reigning champions Manchester City are also interested as they scout potential replacements for Fernandinho.

The verdict

Kondogbia could potentially serve as a replacement for Declan Rice, should he leave the London Stadium in the summer.

Indeed, transfer insider Dean Jones believes that Rice will be ‘gettable’ in the upcoming transfer window and says he’s ‘willing to consider his options’.

Alternatively, David Moyes may view him as a competitor for Rice and Tomas Soucek in the middle of the park, and as potential cover at centre-back. From that point of view, the signing would significantly boost West Ham’s squad depth.

The Central African has already shown how good he can be against PL opposition, having ‘absolutely devoured’ the Manchester United midfield in the Champions League Round of 16 (in the words of La Liga TV presenter Phil Kitromilides).

In other news, The Athletic have broken a big West Ham story.

Wakely and Sales guide Northants home

Northamptonshire moved back into contention for promotion in the County Championship by upsetting the odds with a four-wicket win against Worcestershire at New Road

31-Jul-2010
ScorecardNorthamptonshire moved back into contention for promotion in the County Championship by upsetting the odds with a four-wicket win against Worcestershire at New Road.Successfully chasing 223 on the third afternoon, they completed an outstanding recovery after trailing by 129 runs on an unpredictable pitch. Having bowled out the home side for 93 in their second innings – the third lowest total in the Championship this summer – they sealed their sixth victory of the season after a mature performance by Alex Wakely. The former England Under-19 batsman made a crucial 68 with 12 boundaries, and after losing three wickets in quick succession, Northamptonshire eased over the line with two fours from David Murphy in the second over after tea. Wakely, at 21, is still making his way in the first-class game but he was not lacking in composure after beginning his innings when Richard Jones pounced from cover to run out Ben Howgego for the second time in the match.Initially watchful in a valuable stand of 45 with Stephen Peters, he successfully resisted the main challenge from Matt Mason and Alan Richardson. The veteran seamers were again a handful in helpful conditions, but Peters made an important 37 before jabbing the fifth ball of Richardson’s second spell to Daryl Mitchell at second slip. The match then took a decisive turn as David Sales bounced back from a first-ball dismissal on the previous day. Gradually finding his timing to hit eight boundaries, the former captain made 46 from 67 balls until he was lbw to a full-length delivery from Mason. This could have been a damaging blow for a side missing a number of senior batsmen but Newton more than proved he was up to the task. Born in Somerset and brought up in East Anglia, he completed a productive debut with scores of 23 and 33.Although there was some turn to help Worcestershire, Shakib Al Hasan was unable to make an impact when bowling 10 overs for 35 runs. Instead it was off-spinner Moeen Ali who removed Wakely with a catch at short leg by Alexei Kervezee. There were still some alarms before the job was completed. Like Howgego, Andrew Hall was run out for a second time and Newton brushed a catch behind the wicket in the following over from James Cameron.Earlier, Northamptonshire kept their target within reasonable bounds by mopping up Worcestershire’s last two wickets for the addition of 21 runs. Hall (two for 10) claimed a 35th birthday success when Mason, attempting to pull, edged to the wicketkeeper after driving a six off James Middlebrook.Even then, the former Essex off-spinner had conceded only 23 runs when Jones became his third victim, leg-before wicket to the second ball of his 10th over.

Spurs eye £60m star dubbed "Conte’s talisman"

Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a move for Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni, according to reports from The Athletic…

What’s the story?

They claimed that Spurs are interested in bringing in a new left-sided centre-back in the summer transfer window, with the 22-year-old featuring highly on their shortlist of targets.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-martinez-dybala-spence-conte-2” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

The Italy international is a familiar name to Antonio Conte, having worked under the current Spurs manager in the pair’s time at the San Siro, when Bastoni really emerged on the scene.

Spurs’ new Vertonghen

Tall, strong, comfortable on the ball and left-footed?

Spurs fans will have fond memories of Jan Vertonghen, their former centre-back who very much fit that description during his time in north London.

The Belgian became a fan favourite following his move from Ajax several years ago, and while the club have brought in the likes of Cristian Romero to bring some added power to their defence, they still haven’t found a natural replacement for Vertonghen…until now, perhaps.

Bastoni is very much in that mould of the former Spurs man, with talent scout Jacek Kulig claiming that the 22-year-old is a “complete, dominant and elegant” defender, while adding last summer: “Fantastic young centre-back with some superb ball skills. Perfect to play in a three-man defence. Antonio Conte’s talisman.”

The Italian attempts 70.9 passes per game, which puts him in the top 5% of centre-backs in Serie A, while he also boasts a score of 94 out of 99 for defending intensity, i.e. how active he is in his defensive approach.

Indeed, Bastoni seems to share a very fond relationship with Conte from their time at Inter, and that should translate well should the pair reunite at Spurs.

A piece from The Athletic revealed: “When Conte arrived at Inter in 2019, Bastoni was a 20-year-old who had not yet played for the first team having spent the previous season out on loan at Parma. But Conte wanted to build with Bastoni, so he was in the Inter squad for the 2019-20 season, and Bastoni was thrilled. It did not take long for him to say that Conte was ‘the Messi of coaches’, praising his ‘exceptional football ideas’.”

Valued at £60m by CIES, the Italian could be the perfect heir to Vertonghen at Spurs.

Man Utd: Luckhurst drops Paul Pogba update

Manchester United correspondent Samuel Luckhurst has dropped a worrying update on Paul Pogba ahead of the trip to Leeds United tomorrow afternoon.

The Lowdown: Pogba’s contract situation

Described as a ‘very important’ player by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Frenchman has just a few months remaining on his Old Trafford deal.

He has recently returned from a long period out with a hamstring injury and scored his first goal of the season against Burnley.

The midfielder came off the bench in the win over Brighton last time out to set up Bruno Fernandes’ late second goal, but off the field, things still are a concern.

The Latest: Luckhurst’s update on Pogba

Luckhurst, chief writer for The Manchester Evening News, provided an update on Pogba in a story on Thursday morning.

He revealed from sources close to the 28-year-old that the midfielder’s contract situation remains the same despite positive talks with Ralf Rangnick.

Luckhurst said that ‘there is still no inclination for the midfielder to commit to United at the 11th hour’, with Pogba into the final four months of his contract.

The Verdict: A worry

Pogba is closer to leaving the club for nothing with each passing day, and knowing the Red Devils are not nearing fresh terms can only be a worry.

He is valued at £49.5m by Transfermarkt, so United could lose out on millions on a player for whom they paid £89m back in 2016 if he walks away on a free transfer over the summer.

Clubs from outside of England can actually secure a pre-contract agreement right now due to his contract situation, but hopefully he will pen new terms at Old Trafford before the end of June, given how productive he can be when on form and free of injury.

Rangers handed triple injury boost

Rangers boss Gio van Bronckhorst has been handed a major injury relief at Ibrox over some of his first-team players…

What’s the latest?

Three Gers players were missing from the squad for the 1-1 draw with Dundee United in the Premiership on Sunday and are all set for swift returns.

The club Tweeted: “Jon McLaughlin misses today with a virus whilst Aaron Ramsey and Leon Balogun have minor knocks. All three players will return to the group during the week.”

Delight

Van Bronckhorst will surely be delighted by this news as he has been handed a triple boost ahead of the second-leg clash with Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League on Thursday.

Firstly, he will be pleased to have his second-choice goalkeeper back in the squad. McLaughlin being available will mean that Allan McGregor has a capable deputy in case he picks up an injury or is sent off on Thursday night, rather than the Dutch head coach potentially being forced to dip into his third-choice in a huge European clash.

He will also be buzzing to have Ramsey available due to his quality and experience. The Welshman is yet to start a Europa League or Premiership match but has proven throughout his career that he has the ability to produce at the top level.

In 371 matches for Arsenal, he provided 130 goals and assists in all competitions. He then moved on to Juventus, where he managed six goals and six assists in 70 outings for the Italian giants – playing in the Champions League for both clubs.

This shows the quality that he can potentially bring to the table and that is why van Bronckhorst will be keen to have him available on Thursday.

Finally, he will be over the moon to have Balogun back in training and in contention to face Dortmund. The Nigeria international has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.25 in the Europa League this season and only Alfredo Morelos (7.27) has averaged a higher score.

This suggests that he has been one of the club’s best players in the competition and having him back would be a huge boost to the side. He has proven that he can put in excellent performances on a regular basis in Europe and his strong defending could be key to Rangers maintaining or extending their two-goal lead in the tie to progress through to the next round.

England embark on Operation Whitewash

For the first time in a long time, Australia are being threatened with the prospect of a 5-0 whitewash, and must rely on their inner mongrel to salvage some dignity from a series in which they have been comfortably outplayed

The Preview by Andrew Miller29-Jun-2010Match factsKeeping their eye on the ball. England are determined not to let Australia reclaim any momentum in this series•Getty Images

June 30, 2010, The Oval
Start time 1pm (12.00GMT)Big pictureIn the end, it was close. So, so close. But thanks to Tim Bresnan’s selective slogging in the desperate closing overs at Old Trafford, England avoided their old-school trick of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory over Australia, and turned a jittery 2-1 scoreline into an unequivocally imposing 3-0 walkover. For the first time in a long time, Australia are being threatened with the prospect of a 5-0 whitewash, and must rely on their inner mongrel to salvage some dignity from a series in which they have been comfortably outplayed.Sporting contests often come down to the finest of margins – just ask England’s footballers, who will gripe for evermore about the goal that wasn’t in Bloemfontein. But in both of Sunday’s matches, the most memorable passage of play was also the most misleading. Until their dramatic collapse of six wickets for 18, England were cruising to their most crushing win of the campaign so far, and the fact that they held their nerve in spite of the late jitters actually said more about the spirit of their side than a seven-wicket stroll ever could have done. That’s not to say that further victories are a foregone conclusion – far from it. The spirit that Doug Bollinger and Shaun Tait summoned in adversity was stunning to behold, and gave England a timely reminder of the qualities required to play for a champion side. An Australian team with Ricky Ponting at the helm, no matter how quiet his current form may be, has a direct link to the country’s recent golden era, and as such, it retains an aura that England’s own prospective worldbeaters have yet to acquire. Now the series moves south to London, and it just so happens that the last two games, The Oval and Lord’s, were the scenes of Australia’s defeats in last summer’s Ashes. Whether that inspires either side to greater deeds is a moot point, but Ponting for one will not be lacking for incentives to get one over the old enemy. A dead rubber it may be in theory, but with a seminal winter in prospect, the tug-of-war over the bragging rights is only just getting started.Form guide (last five completed matches)England WWWWW
Australia LLLWLWatch out for…Shaun Tait’s return to 50-over action was unmissable. He hadn’t featured in the format since February 2009, but from the moment he detonated Craig Kieswetter’s middle stump in the first over of the run-chase, England had no option but to treat his missiles with utter respect. Ricky Ponting used him brilliantly, in shockingly quick two-over bursts, and each of his three wickets came in the first over of a new spell. He could be wild and woolly, and some his wides barely touched the cut strip, but when he got it right, his 95mph pace was too hot to handle.Kevin Pietersen has been subdued without looking out of form in the series to date. Some of his strokeplay has been out of this world, but scores of 29, 33 and 25 speak of a job half done. In many respects that is a testament to England’s dominance – KP has been a second-fiddle in most of his innings to date, to Eoin Morgan at the Rose Bowl and Andrew Strauss at Old Trafford – but it goes without saying, he’ll not want the series to drift by without putting in a command performance.Team newsShaun Marsh had been touted for a call-up to inject some new life into a misfiring batting line-up, but the signs are that Australia intend to stick to the men who’ve got them into this pickle in the first place. The new-look bowling attack did everything that was asked of it at Old Trafford, so no changes there either.Australia (possible) 1 Shane Watson, 2 Tim Paine (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Cameron White, 6 Michael Hussey, 7 James Hopes, 8 Steven Smith, 9 Shaun Tait, 10 Ryan Harris, 11 Doug Bollinger.England’s spare parts have been continuing their exodus to the shires, with Ian Bell and Ajmal Shahzad loaned out to the Lions for their game against West Indies. Another sign that an unchanged team is in prospect.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Craig Kieswetter (wk), 3 Kevin Pietersen, 4 Paul Collingwood, 5 Eoin Morgan, 6 Michael Yardy, 7 Luke Wright, 8 Tim Bresnan, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James Anderson.Pitch and conditionsEngland’s heat-wave is set to continue, despite a brief shower on Tuesday that coincided, according to a certain tabloid, with the footballers’ return from South Africa. Another win-the-toss-and-bat wicket is in prospect – except, of course, that isn’t Andrew Strauss’s style right now …Stats and Trivia England’s run of three ODI wins in a row equals their best in recent times against Australia – their improbable revival under Andrew Flintoff during the CB Series in 2006-07. But they’ve still got a way to go to better the five in a row they achieved between 1995 and 1999, a run that included another 3-0 home scoreline in the 1997 Texaco Trophy. England have won 17 of their 31 ODIs at The Oval, but it’s not been their happiest hunting ground of late. They’ve won just two of their last eight fixtures, one against Bangladesh in 2005, and another against South Africa in 2008.Quotes”We’d love to stop them, 5-0 would be devastating. But we’ve just got to go out there and do everything properly and hopefully win the next two.”
“It’s important that we keep the momentum going and confidence going in this game and not look too far ahead. It’s been a great series win but I don’t think we’re finished.”
Michael Yardy wants England to complete the job they’ve started
