West Indies must be wary of losing focus

Both Netherlands and West Indies are searching for their first victory at the World Cup and this game is not the foregone conclusion it may appear

The Big PictureThese two teams began their World Cup campaigns with contrasting defeats. Netherlands’ loss against England can safely be bracketed in the ‘heroic’ category, but West Indies’ insipid performance against South Africa was depressingly familiar. This contest may not be the mismatch that the two line-ups suggested it should be.On the evidence of their opening game, West Indies are going to find themselves fighting it out for the fourth qualifying spot from Group B alongside England and Bangladesh. Therefore this match is one they can’t afford to take lightly especially after Netherlands showed they have the ability to make the major sides stand up and take notice.Netherlands will fancy making another mark because they’ll face a thin West Indian attack stripped down even further by the absence of Dwayne Bravo. If Ryan ten Doeschate can lead a display of similar resilience as they showed against England, setting a decent target, or chasing one down, may not be out of reach for the Dutch. However, like England’s class with the bat eventually came through against Netherlands’ weak bowling resources, the same should apply to West Indies. Even with the loss of Bravo snr there is considerable batting power available led by Chris Gayle followed by the hugely talented Darren Bravo. But the tournament hasn’t had an upset yet and West Indies will have to be careful they don’t become the first victims.Form guide(completed matches, most recent first)
Netherlands LLLWL
West Indies LLLLLWatch out for…Alexei Kervezee isn’t a man short of confidence. He has announced his ambition to play for England and his performances for Worcestershire suggest that isn’t out of reach. He didn’t quite get going against his possible future team-mates in Nagpur before top-edging a pull to depart for 16 off 25 balls but he remains one of Netherlands’ key batsmen. The Dutch can’t rely on ten Doeschate to score hundreds each time he bats and Kervezee has the advantage of opening the batting, the ideal position for a strokemaker on the subcontinent. He’ll want to leave a mark sooner rather than later.West Indies are short on wicket-taking bowlers but in Kemar Roach they have one of the fastest on show at the World Cup. He’s quicker than anything Netherlands faced against England and will test their courage and skill. It is vital to West Indies that Roach can take regular wickets during the tournament because there isn’t much strike power behind him. A decent haul in this match would boost his confidence ahead of bigger challenges to come.Team newsThe indications are that Netherlands will stick to the eleven that pushed England so close last week even though the bowling was exposed. It’s the lack of wicket-takers that is the biggest problem for a number of Associates and the pressure will be ten Doeschate with ball as well as bat. Pieter Seelaar, the left-arm spinner, looked reasonably handy in the opening game.Netherlands (probable) 1 Alexei Kervezee, 2 Wesley Barresi (wk), 3 Tom Cooper, 4 Ryan ten Doeschate, 5 Bas Zuiderent, 6 Tom de Grooth, 7 Peter Borren (capt), 8 Mudassar Bukhari, 9 Pieter Seelaar, 10 Bernard Loots, 11 Berend WestdijkWest Indies are going to be forced to make at least one change after Dwayne Bravo was ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury. The suggestion is they will strengthen the spin-bowling department with a recall for left-armer Nikita Miller. The other option would be to bring in the pace of either Ravi Rampaul or Andre Russell.West Indies (possible) 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Devon Smith, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 5 Shivnarine Chanderpaul, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Devon Thomas (wk), 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Sulieman Benn, 10 Nikita Miller, 11 Kemar RoachPitch and conditionsOttis Gibson, the West Indies coach, said he was surprised the pitch didn’t slow up more against South Africa. There are also contrasting views on how important the dew factor will be – Peter Borren believes it will be a significant issue, but Darren Sammy is less bothered.Stats and trivia The two teams have only met once before at ODI level and West Indies cruised to a 10-wicket victory on neutral turf in Dublin in 2007. Chris Gayle needs 81 runs to reach 8000 in ODIs Ryan ten Doeschate has the highest ODI average of all time of 71.21, 13 runs ahead of the next best Hashim Amla.Quotes”It’s pretty big sport in Holland, football. Some people were surprised that they made the final. It’ll be nice if we could emulate that. It might be a bit more of a surprise if we did it.”
“Everyone in the team is responsible for our performance. I’m one of the allrounders and I should put my hand up and put in a good performance on the field.”

Australia leave World Cup plans to last minute

Australia’s one-day team is still being assembled four days from the naming of the World Cup squad

A crane sits atop Cricket Australia’s head office in Melbourne, and scaffolding surrounds the building. It’s somehow fitting that after the Ashes debacle, even the physical structure of the organisation is being reviewed, along with the internal workings. More pressing are the modifications to Australia’s one-day team, which is still being assembled four days from the naming of the World Cup squad. On Sunday at the MCG, several men will have 100 overs to prove they should be part of the World Cup defence. It’s hard to fathom that after four years of preparation, the selectors could be so undecided that one match could influence their decisions. But Andrew Hilditch said as much when he named the 14-man squad for this game against England, the first in a seven-match series. What have the selectors been doing for the past year if not finetuning their one-day side for the World Cup? David Hussey hasn’t played ODI cricket in 15 months, but has suddenly been thrust in for one game and told that he could earn a World Cup place. If the selectors didn’t want him for the 50-over tour of India in October, why is he considered now, when his domestic one-day form is poor? And what of Callum Ferguson and Shaun Marsh, who appeared to be groomed for this world event? There are even more questions over the make-up of the attack Australia will take to the subcontinent. Brett Lee is back from injury and fighting for a place, Shaun Tait is in with a shot, and together with Mitchell Johnson they could form a fearsome, but potentially expensive, pace trio at the World Cup. That leaves Australia’s defensive bowling options thin, but the stand-in captain Michael Clarke believes the mix can work.”I definitely think you could get the overs out of your spinners, Watto [Shane Watson] and your part-timers,” Clarke said in Melbourne ahead of the first ODI against England. “Dave Hussey adds to our bowling as well, bowling his part-time off-spin. I certainly see those three guys [Tait, Johnson and Lee] as quite attacking wicket-taking bowlers.”As you saw last night, Mitchell, Brett and Shaun, when they’re bowling well they can also dry the runs up, especially once the ball gets a little bit older. If you get any sort of reverse-swing with a bit of protection for the guys, they can also do that role of bowling pretty fast and straight and dry the runs up. Any time the ball is coming over 140kph or 150kph at you, it’s hard to start against.”The job of tying up an end has often been filled over the past year by the medium-pacer James Hopes, the seamer Clint McKay or the offspinner Nathan Hauritz. But for some reason, Hopes appears to be out of favour and will battle to win a World Cup spot, despite having played 17 ODIs over the past year. McKay is injured and Hauritz is competing with Xavier Doherty, although there is a slim chance both spinners could make the 15-man squad. It was also odd that the selectors bothered choosing 14 men for Sunday’s game against England, especially when all along they were intending to leave Hauritz out. Hussey, Lee, Tait and Doherty need to play to press their claims, meaning that Mitchell Johnson and Peter Siddle will have to rest. Rarely have individual performances mattered more in a single game.”I don’t think it will compromise my captaincy or the team’s performance as such,” Clarke said. “We’ve got a squad here, we’ve got one game tomorrow. It’s the last opportunity for players to be looked at before the World Cup selection. That will play a part in selection for this game. But our goal is to win every game we play and to definitely win this series.”The squad for the remaining six games will be chosen after the opening match, and it will almost certainly be the World Cup group minus Ricky Ponting, who is recovering from surgery on his finger. Along with Ponting, Tim Paine is likely to make the World Cup squad, meaning at least one man in the 14-strong group for the first ODI will be axed.By Wednesday, construction of the World Cup side will be finished. But the work at Cricket Australia headquarters is only just beginning.

Aston Villa: Update on Chukwuemeka’s future

Aston Villa midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka “could leave” Villa Park this summer, with a host of European clubs reportedly on alert.

What’s the word?

That’s according to super-journalist Fabrizio Romano who claims that the 18-year-old midfielder may well depart Steven Gerrard’s side this summer.

According to the Italian: “His recent lack of game time has put a host of European clubs on alert – with Germany a likely destination as he enters the final year of his contract.”

Romano added to his Twitter post: “Bundesliga clubs are already exploring this possibility.”

Gerrard fuming

Considering the sheer amount of potential that the young prodigy has expressed, losing him this summer would surely come as a big blow to the Villans.

Back in March of this year, Gerrard spoke of Chukwuemeka’s contractual status, as per Birmingham Mail, saying this: “We’ve done everything we can from our side to try and make progress.

“I’m not sure where that’s up to at the moment.”

And when fellow academy graduate Jacob Ramsey signed a new deal at the Villans just last week, Gerrard was again asked for an update on Chukuemeka’s renewal status at the club: “No, I have no update on Carney’s situation” said the Villa boss, as per Birmingham Mail.

With the latest reports from Romano stating that the England U19s starlet “could leave”, it shows that no progress has been made over a new contract and as it stands, would see him depart in the summer for free.

The No.33 has not seen much action again this season, making just nine appearances in the Premier League, with his cameos accumulating to just 188 minutes on the pitch.

Despite limited opportunities for Gerrard’s side, the 18-year-old has managed to produce an assist during that time and has primarily featured as a central midfielder. Though he has also been played slightly higher up in an attacking midfielder role in the Carabao Cup game against Barrow.

His versatility and potential will have the reportedly interested German sides licking their lips, and with Carney still no closer to signing a new deal, he may look to mimic the likes of Jaden Sancho and Jude Bellingham who braved the move to the Bundesliga in a bid to fast-track their development.

Should he live up to their careers so far, Villa will surely look back on this situation with an enormous amount of regret.

West Ham insider makes Raphinha claim

West Ham United insider Claret & Hugh have shared a promising transfer update out of Rush Green involving Leeds United and Premier League star Raphinha.

The Lowdown: Hammers make move…

Hammers boss David Moyes, according to reports, was heavily interested in signing the Brazilian playmaker over winter.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

West Ham apparently made a move for Raphinha in January but to no avail with the South American coming as yet another marquee target GSB couldn’t bring in for the club.

Their bad luck in the last transfer window has even lead to doubts surrounding head of recruitment Rob Newman, according to Claret & Hugh again, with the Irons chief now facing a pivotal summer window.

As Newman aims to take his next set of opportunities to land key targets, C&H have shared an update on Raphinha and West Ham’s interest.

The Latest: Newman could launch ‘cut-price’ move…

According to their information, West Ham, and by extension their transfer chief Newman, are keeping a ‘close eye’ on Leeds’ situation in case they’re relegated.

The club insider goes on to say that the Whites’ drop down to the Championship could allow West Ham to ‘launch cut-price moves’ for Raphinha and another target in Kalvin Phillips.

C&H add that ‘deals will surely be there to be done’ if Jesse Marsch’s side go down.

The Verdict: Promising update…

Signing a player of Raphinha’s calibre for a bargain fee would be pretty special, especially given his serious links to La Liga giants and footballing heavyweights Barcelona.

The 25-year-old has been a revelation at Elland Road and one of their most pivotal figures, with ex-top flight goalkeeper and pundit Paddy Kenny claiming he has been ‘unbelievable’.

Raphinha’s sensational numbers back his obvious quality with the Whites superstar averaging more shots at goal, key passes and successful take-ons per 90 than anyone in Marsch’s squad this season (WhoScored).

If Leeds do indeed drop a division, we believe West Ham shouldn’t hesitate in making a bargain move for the attacker.

Leeds: Joe Rodon update emerges

Tottenham are reportedly willing to sell Leeds-linked defender Joe Rodon this summer.

The Lowdown: Leeds interest

Rodon, labelled as ‘flawless’ and ‘special’ in a Wales shirt by journalist Ian Mitchelmore, was linked with a move to Elland Road in the January window.

Victor Orta and co. were keen on his services in a potential loan deal alongside Newcastle, however, the Wales international remained in north London.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-42/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Antonio Conte is yet to use the 24-year-old in the Premier League, and it looks as if a Spurs exit will be discussed once again over the coming months given he is so far down the pecking order.

The Latest: Rodon update

TEAMtalk relayed an update from The Telegraph, suggesting that Conte is willing to green-light an exit for the centre-back this summer.

Their report claims that Leeds and Newcastle are once again on alert regarding the Wales centre-back and both could be interested in a summer swoop.

The Verdict: Orta target?

Jesse Marsch currently has five centre-back options, however, he has taken over the league’s leakiest defence and is thought to be planning a defensive overhaul.

Robin Koch has been linked with an exit in recent weeks, so should he depart this summer, a new centre-back would more than likely be on his radar.

Orta clearly wants Rodon at Elland Road given the interest under two different managers, so a move could be one to keep a close eye on, providing Leeds remain in the Premier League.
