For most of the Mumbai A players, the first-class game against England XI is an opportunity to push for Ranji Trophy selection. For 22-year-old medium-pacer Javed Khan, however, it was more than that as he took the field on the first day. Javed’s father, Mohammad Jayish Khan, had died the night before while undergoing an open-heart surgery.Javed, who played two Ranji Trophy games for Mumbai in 2010-11 but has been ignored by the selectors since then, skipped his father’s burial and decided to turn up for the game at the Dr DY Patil Stadium on Saturday. He had a fruitful day, dismissing Jonathan Trott and the centurion Jonny Bairstow. He was not required to bowl on Sunday morning.”By 5 am, we advised him to play the match. He was crying the whole night and was in a state of shock,” Javed’s coach Raju Pathak told . “But this match against England was a big opportunity for him. His father was keen to see him bowl against England. So he did what his father would have wanted him to do.”Most of his teammates in the dressing room did not know that Javed had lost his father. And those who knew didn’t want to talk about it because they thought it would affect Javed. It was very brave of him to come out and play today.”

In-form Durham finished their campaign with a fifth win in six games after beating Sussex by five wickets with a day to spare. Michael Richardson struck 58 and Ben Stokes a quickfire 45 as Durham chased down their victory target of 165 after dismissing Sussex for 180 in their second innings.Despite their superb form at the end of the season, Durham had to settle for a sixth-placed finish in Division One after a miserable start to the campaign which saw them fail to win any of their first 10 matches. Sussex, meanwhile, remain 10 points ahead of them and will hang on to the fourth-place prize money unless Nottinghamshire win tomorrow.Durham skipper Paul Collingwood, who took over the four-day captaincy in mid-season, hailed the spirit in his side: “I couldn’t have asked for anything more in the second half of the season. We were in a dire situation but the players have shown a lot of pride and determination. Every single one of them has made a crucial contribution at some point.”Durham seamer Chris Rushworth took the last four Sussex wickets in the morning to achieve career-best figures for the third time this season, finishing with 5 for 38. Luke Wells failed to add to his overnight 51, falling to the 16th ball of the day when he edged Stokes to Phil Mustard, who claimed his 500th first-class victim. Rushworth did the rest, swinging the ball both ways to claim two lbw verdicts and a gully catch before last man Monty Panesar lobbed a catch to mid-on.Durham needed 165 to win and Mark Stoneman got them off to a fluent start, but Keaton Jennings made only one before fending a steeply-rising ball from Lewis Hatchett to second slip. Hatchett also skidded one through Stoneman’s back-foot defensive shot to bowl him for 24 before Stokes emerged at 34 for 2 and immediately cracked him for three fours.Stokes made 45 off 49 balls before lifting Panesar to long-on, then Richardson took over. He pulled Hatchett for his fifth four to reach 50 off 123 balls just before Dale Benkenstein was bowled by Panesar with 27 needed. The target was down to 15 when Hatchett straightened one off the pitch to have Richardson lbw, but previous captain Mustard easily picked off the remaining runs in partnership with his successor Collingwood.”We had a bit of a chuckle as we came off,” Collingwood said. “Phil has been magnificent and the struggle in the first half of the season was not down to his captaincy. It was a blip and it was a shock to us all, but I think the future is very bright.”

Lancashire crumble after draining Clarke ton

Lancashire lost five wickets with just 54 on the board and are already staring at defeat after Warwickshire amassed 557 for 6

Unless the weather takes a drastic turn for the worse, it is impossible to see Lancashire escaping another confidence-sapping defeat after finishing five wickets down and still the small matter of 347 runs shy of even avoiding the follow-on.This was in reply to a Warwickshire total that was more than five sessions in the making, which was significant in itself in that it left Lancashire weary and dispirited and not in the best of shape, in terms of physical and mental readiness, to face a Warwickshire bowling attack with 25 overs in which to bend their backs and put pressure on a batting unit already short of confidence.Glen Chapple, whose absence from the bowling attack clearly eased the way for Warwickshire’s batsmen, spoke boldly of having players at his disposal with the quality to build partnerships. So far, though, apart from the 31 runs Paul Horton and Stephen Moore managed to put on before everything began to unravel, no combination has managed more than 14 and Lancashire are already down to Ashwell Prince and the wicketkeeper, Gareth Cross, with only the wounded Chapple and the explosive Ajmal Shahzad to come before the genuine tailenders, Gary Keedy and Simon Kerrigan.Their dreadful start to the season, therefore, shows little sign of getting better very soon. Warwickshire’s dominance of the opening day simply carried forward into the second. Chapple, who will have a scan on Monday to ascertain whether his side strain is a short-term problem or something more inconvenient, had to leave the first overs, with the ball still fairly new, in the hands of Luke Procter and Shahzad. But the latter, who had bowled well without much luck on Wednesday, did not have the same control this time, giving away too many cheap runs.Keedy and Kerrigan, therefore, were pressed into tandem service inside the first hour and barely rested from then on. Kerrigan’s 49 overs represented the heaviest workload of his career so far. Keedy wound up bowling 50, which he has done before but not as a 37-year-old.By the end they were understandably weary, their sterling efforts at least to restrict Warwickshire’s progress interrupted from time to time by Rikki Clarke letting rip with one of his four sixes. They had found some turn, but not to a degree that troubled anyone much. When the declaration came, perhaps a little later than it might have, Warwickshire’s attack, in form and bolstered by the return of Chris Woakes, scented blood.Woakes had not played since damaging ankle ligaments in March but you would not have known it. Confidence tuned up after hitting half a dozen boundaries in an unbeaten 43, he ran in with purpose and took a wicket with his 10th ball, adding a second in the penultimate over, at which point Lancashire were 54 for 5.Earlier, he had persuaded umpire Michael Gough that he had Karl Brown caught off the glove with a ball that spat off a length, rocking Lancashire on their heels at 32 for 2 after opener Horton had been leg-before to a full length delivery from the left-armer Keith Barker, who was being assessed by one of England’s talent spotters, Geoff Arnold. Then Barker’s new-ball partner, Chris Wright, who had switched ends after giving way to Woakes at the Birmingham End, took two wickets in four balls, beating Moore for pace with one that plucked out his off stump, then having Steven Croft caught behind with another that found some venomous bounce.Clarke, who had an escape on 57 when Kerrigan failed to hang on to a difficult return catch, finished unbeaten on 123, having batted for more than three and a half hours with a level of discipline and self-restraint that reflects a more mature approach to his game.He put on 147 for the sixth wicket with Tim Ambrose, who was within sight of his first century for three years when he chipped to short midwicket for 96. The only other wicket to fall, after half an hour of the opening session, had been that of Darren Maddy, who miscued Keedy to be caught at mid-off.

Rehman set for Somerset move

Abdur Rehman, the Pakistan left-arm spinner, is set to join Somerset for the latter part of the season subject to being granted a visa

Abdur Rehman, the Pakistan left-arm spinner, is set to join Somerset for the latter part of the season subject to being granted a visa. If the move is confirmed he will provide cover for George Dockrell who is due to be on international duty with Ireland.Rehman has become a key part of Pakistan’s Test attack, forming a spin partnership with Saeed Ajmal, and took 19 wickets in the whitewash against England earlier this year. The current Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo is his 17th but he is not part of Pakistan’s Twenty20 set-up which should make him available for the remainder of the English season.”Contracts have been signed with Rehman and a no objection certificate has been sent to us by the Pakistan Cricket Board,” director of cricket Brian Rose told Somerset’s website. “It just remains for Abdur to sort out a visa and, once that is done, we hope he will be with us in time for our championship game with Warwickshire at Taunton, starting on July 18.””We looked at other possible targets, but he was always high on the list,” he added. “He has an excellent first-class record, with a bowling average not dissimilar to Murali Kartik’s. Rehman also bats reasonably well, going in around number eight, so that was also a plus point when it came to signing him.”The other positive is that he is not currently in Pakistan’s T20 side, so once he joins us he should be available for the remainder of our season.”Somerset have tried and failed to secure the services of a host of overseas players this season including Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Roelof van der Merwe and Faf du Plessis. They currently have the South Africa pair of Richard Levi and Albie Morkel for the Friends Life t20. Somerset will be crossing their fingers about Rehman as a number of players have struggled to obtain visas this season.

Ashraf downs Derbyshire

Moin Ashraf was the star of the show as Yorkshire claimed their second Friends Life t20 victory against a Derbyshire side who lost for the first time in the North Group

18-Jun-2012
ScorecardMoin Ashraf was the star of the show as Yorkshire claimed their second Friends Life t20 victory against a Derbyshire side who lost for the first time in the North Group.Ashraf, the 20-year-old pace bowler, took 4 for 18 in a 41-run victory under the Derby floodlights after Gary Ballance had launched a late onslaught with an unbeaten 47 off 35 balls to lift Yorkshire to 150 for 5.Former Yorkshire spinner David Wainwright had bowled superbly to take 2 for 14 but Ballance struck three sixes as 32 came from the last two overs and the Falcons crumbled to 109 with Rich Pyrah claiming three for 21.After the teams observed a minute’s silence in memory of Surrey batsman Tom Maynard, Yorkshire’s innings started well, stalling briefly when Wainwright came into the attack before finishing with a flourish as Ballance finally found his range to take the total past 150.Although Phil Jacques went cheaply, Andrew Gale was looking dangerous until Wainwright removed his former skipper with his second ball when the opener got under a drive and was caught at deep mid off for 39 off 26 balls.Wainwright landed another body blow two balls later when he found some sharp turn to have South African batsman David Miller caught at slip and Yorkshire’s scoring rate dipped dramatically with only 39 coming from eight overs.Joe Root was caught behind for 36 trying to reverse sweep Rana Naved-ul-Hasan and when Pyrah was bowled off his pads, the visitors were 107 for 5 in the 17th over. Ballance had struggled to get the ball away but after swinging Rana for the first six of the innings, he pulled Mark Turner for two more as 17 came off the penultimate over.Rana bowled Ballance with a no-ball that gave Yorkshire a free hit from the final delivery and Ballance took advantage by hitting his third four to give his side a competitive total.Derbyshire’s chase was starting to gain momentum when Mitchell Starc removed his fellow Australian Usman Khawaja when a top-edged pull ended in the gloves of Gerard Brophy and Ashraf trapped Wes Durston lbw in the next over.Ashraf then bowled Wayne Madsen with another straight and full ball and the force was with Yorkshire when a drive was deflected into the stumps to run out Dan Redfern. With the asking rate climbing to above nine an over, Ross Whiteley was bowled swinging wildly at Pyrah who yorked Chesney Hughes and had Tom Poynton caught at long off before Ashraf cleaned up the tail.
