Rahul Dravid and Adam Gilchrist have praised the Rajasthan Royals bowlers for tying down the Kings XI Punjab batsmen towards the end of their innings in Mohali on Thursday. Kings XI were 105 for 2 in the 15th over but were restricted to 145 for 6, Royals allrounder Kevon Cooper leading the way with 3 for 23 from four overs. Ajinkya Rahane then made his third successive half-century as Royals recorded their ninth win of the season with eight wickets and an over to spare.Dravid, the Royals captain, said death bowling had been a “major concern” for his side, and something that had been discussed among the players. “We have been discussing the issue in the team meetings, working out ways on how to improve our bowling at the death. We actually had a chat with two to three bowlers,” Dravid said. “We came out with a few ideas and some plans. The bowlers have been implementing those plans for the last couple of games. I think the bowlers, particularly Kevon and James Faulkner, performed really well.”Gilchrist, the Kings XI captain, said his batsmen should have made more runs in the last five overs but also credited the Royals attack. “The middle-order batsmen didn’t capitalise on the start,” Gilchrist said. “But full credit to the Rajasthan bowlers. They worked out how to bowl at the death on that wicket. They had the perfect variations and took pace off the ball.”The pitch was slower than usual. And that made it difficult for the batsmen to hit boundaries. That took the steam out of our batting. We wanted to set a target of around 160, which would have been competitive on this wicket. We had a good foundation but the middle-order batsmen failed to launch themselves.”Despite the early loss of Dravid in the chase, Rahane formed big partnerships with Shane Watson and Sanju Samson as Royals motored to victory. “We timed the chase perfectly,” Dravid said. “It could have been a tricky chase, especially because of the slow wicket. They have got very good bowlers in their line-up as well. But Watson and Rahane had a good partnership going to lay the foundation. Then Rahane and Sanju Samson finished it off quite well.”Samson, the 18-year old wicketkeeper-batsman from Kerala, has impressed in the few opportunities he’s got so far, and made an important contribution again, with an unbeaten 47 off 33 deliveries. Dravid said there was “something special” about Samson. “I hope he continues to work hard,” Dravid said. “He is a very tough customer to bowl at. If you think you can stifle him by bowling short deliveries, you are wrong. He actually plays the short ball quite well. He can play shots and is a very good player of spin.”Cooper, the Man of the Match, said the slow Mohali pitch suited his bowling. “I wasn’t bowling well in the last few games,” Cooper said. “I knew I had to do well here. So it feels really nice to contribute to the team’s win. The wicket was a bit slow. Actually, it suited my bowling. I just tried to take the pace off the ball and it worked out well for me. We bowled well in partnerships. That’s very important in T20 cricket.”

Kings XI batsmen need to step up

Preview of the match between Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders in Mohali

Big PictureOn paper, Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab appear mismatched on one count- the batting. Kings XI were not tested in their opening game, chasing a paltry 100, but in their next two managed under-par scores of 138 and 124, losing both. A look at their batting line-up explains their apathy. Their captain Adam Gilchrist is struggling for runs, and in trying to break free played a poor shot on Sunday against Rajasthan Royals. Their middle order comprises uncapped Indian players in Manan Vohra, Mandeep Singh and Gurkeerat Singh and expectations from them will always be low, though all have potential. It leaves a heavy burden on David Hussey, who, not surprisingly, was their top scorer in their last two games. Azhar Mahmood is their most experienced player after Gilchrist, but Kings XI cannot afford to leave everything to their middle order and below to bail them out. The top order needs to step up, and give their bowlers a decent total to defend.Knight Riders in contrast have a stronger top order and it makes a difference when the captain fires. While Gilchrist has been under par, his counterpart Gautam Gambhir hasn’t, already piling on 175 runs from four matches. Jacques Kallis’ experience is unmatched, and with Brendon McCullum fit, Knight Riders will find it hard to leave out either Kallis or Eoin Morgan to accommodate him. Having piled on 180 in their last match, against Sunrisers Hyderabad, and winning by 48 runs, it is unlikely they will want to tinker with their line-up, unless they have to.Players to watchSachithra Senanayake played his first IPL match on Sunday, and Knight Riders didn’t regret picking him. The Sri Lanka offspinner opened the bowling and finished with miserly figures of 4-0-18-1. His spell didn’t allow Sunrisers to get away to a strong start chasing a big target. Knight Riders will want to retain him for at least another game. It’s good news for Kings XI that Adam Gilchrist’s wicketkeeping reflexes haven’t waned, having pulled off two difficult takes against Royals. It will be better news for them if he can score more runs, and improve on his scores of 15, 9 and 0. As a captain and an overseas player, he picks himself. Explosive starts from Gilchrist will be crucial for Kings XI going forward.Stats and trivia Jacques Kallis needs two wickets to become the second-highest wicket-taker for KKR in the IPL. Sunil Narine is first (31) and Rajat Bhatia is second (26). Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh hold the record for the highest partnership in the IPL. They added 206 runs for Kings XI against Royal Challengers Bangalore in May 2011. Gautam Gambhir is the third highest run-getter in the IPL against Kings XI Punjab with 312 runs from 9 matches at an average of 52.Quotes”Last year, trying to get into a winning side was very difficult. I hope I get to play as many games as possible for KKR this year.”
“We did not play our full quota of 20 overs so that did make a difference. Maybe we could have added 12-15 runs in those balls.”

Carrasco do Goiás, Alan Mineiro é arma do Vila Nova no estadual

Bangladesh board didn't follow protocol – PCB

The PCB has said the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the organisers of the BPL had not followed the correct procedures with regards to signing Pakistan players

Umar Farooq16-Jan-2013ICC regulations on domestic cricket events

Clause 32A.4 reads: “Each Member shall ensure, to the greatest extent permitted by applicable law (as determined in the reasonable opinion of the Member), that no foreign player participates in any domestic cricket event under the jurisdiction of the Member unless such foreign player holds a valid no-objection certificate from the relevant Member.
And for the avoidance of any doubt, the relevant Member is the only body capable of granting a no-objection certificate for a foreign player. Accordingly, all such applications must be made directly to the relevant Member and not to any other third party.”

The PCB has said the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the organisers of the BPL had not followed the correct procedures with regards to signing Pakistan players, and has given that as the reason for their non-participation in Bangladesh’s Twenty20 league. The Pakistan players, the PCB said, had been auctioned in Dhaka without permission and without any intimation from the BCB.”There are great embarrassments when boards are bypassed and players approached directly,” a PCB spokesman said. “This was regrettably felt by BCB when they approached PCB at the last moment for release of the players for their league.”As per practice and procedures in vogue, a home board has to approach the visiting players’ parent board seeking release of its players for their domestic cricket competitions. In BPL’s case, BCB, their representatives or the players’ agents were in contact directly with the Pakistan players and PCB was kept out of this process. Even the auction of Pakistan players at BPL was done without PCB’s prior permission or intimation.”As many as 60 Pakistan players registered for the BPL auction but only 26 were sold to the seven franchises, but without the necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs) from the PCB. The players had submitted their applications with an NOC from their department team instead. However, apart from the issues with protocol, the withdrawal of Pakistan players is also centred on the standoff over a Bangladesh tour to Pakistan.”The BCB committed to tour Pakistan in March 2012, this initiative was also supported by ICC,” the PCB said. “But in an incident unprecedented in the history of world cricket, a court issued stay orders against a mutually agreed tour. The BCB promised again to tour Pakistan on January 10 but backed off once again. The BCB needs to take a step forward in reciprocation.”The PCB, historically, has been extremely supportive of BCB. On request of BCB the PCB released its players for the first edition of BPL in 2012. The PCB also supported Mustaf Kamal’s candidacy as vice president of ICC.”

Peter van der Merwe, the former South Africa captain, has died at the age of 75 in Port Elizabeth. He had been in poor health, Cricket South Africa said.Van der Merwe played 15 Tests for South Africa, from 1963 to 1967, and captained in eight of them, leading the team to a series victory in England in 1965 and their first ever series victory over Australia in 1966-67. He was originally a left-arm spinner and later developed into a middle-order batsman. After retiring, he served as South Africa’s chairman of selectors when they were re-admitted to international cricket in 1991, for the tour of India and the 1992 World Cup. He also served as an ICC match referee from 1992 to 1999.Jacques Faul, the acting CSA chief executive, said van der Merwe had played a vital role as a cricketer and administrator. “Peter made an immense contribution to South African cricket both on and off the field,” he said. “He played a major role in changing the mindset of South African cricket from a defensive to an attacking style of play. He was hugely popular with and respected by his players.”The Eastern Province Cricket Board president Graeme Sauls also paid tribute: “I was very sad to hear that Peter van der Merwe had passed away after a long illness. It is ironic that I have just finished reading the autobiography of Peter Pollock and he speaks fondly of his former shrewd South African captain who led South Africa to series wins against England in 1965 and against Australia in 1966-67. Peter, of course, also represented and captained EP during his playing days and I would like to on behalf of everyone involved in Eastern Province Cricket to extend our heartfelt condolences to Peter’s family.”

'Take it out of our hands' – Harris

Ryan Harris, the Australia fast bowler, admits bowlers can’t be left to determine own fitness

Daniel Brettig15-Jan-2013

Ryan Harris: “The scheduling is very difficult as it is, the amount of cricket we’re playing, and guys have to rest”•AFP

Man of the match in Barbados last year, Ryan Harris was the most furious man in the Caribbean when in Trinidad he became the first of three Australian pacemen to be omitted for preventative reasons over the past 12 months.A few days later, the anger had cooled. Now, in the final stages of his recovery from shoulder surgery with the Ashes in mind, Harris admits that the current environment of insane schedules and diverse formats means players cannot be left to decide their own readiness: the instinctive desire to play as much as possible will invariably overrule common sense. If the issue of rested cricketers regaining their places ahead of others who have performed in the interim sits heavily with Harris, he has agreed that for the moment there is unlikely to be a better way to preserve Australia’s fast bowlers for the battles to be fought in India and England later in 2013. Like the national selector John Inverarity, Harris pointed that the lack of pre-season training is affecting the longevity of pacemen, who he stresses are otherwise as fit as they could possibly be.”The scheduling is very difficult as it is, the amount of cricket we’re playing, and guys have to rest,” Harris told ESPNcricinfo. “What the bowlers are not getting is time to build up their strength, no pre-season. With the amount of bowling they do they don’t have time for that. They do what we call priming sessions, light sessions. But they don’t have enough time to get in and build up strength, because they’re bowling and bowling and bowling, losing weight, losing strength. It’s tough to get those sessions done, and that’s why I think guys are falling over at times.”With the rotation, we’ve got guys who can come in and do the job. If you rest the guys now, when we come to India and the Ashes when we really need our frontline bowlers, they pick the best four or five to go through those series and they do really well and they’re rested and strong, that’s when people are going to realise the system’s warranted. If it means getting the Ashes back, people are going to understand.”Recalling the circumstances around his omission from the Trinidad Test XI, Harris demonstrated the range of factors that do not always make it into public view. Not only was Harris’ speckled injury history a part of considerations, there was also the fact he had fought a stomach bug while notching a match-turning half-century and nipping out five wickets to help Australia prevail on a dead pitch at Kensington Oval.”I had bowled a lot of overs, as we all did. I batted a bit as well and I actually was crook during that Test. So I barely ate anything and I’d lost four or five kilograms during that Test match, and was out there the majority of the time,” Harris said. “We went to Trinidad and I was hurting, I was really sore and fatigued, and Mickey [Arthur] came to me and said ‘how you feeling?'”I said ‘I’m okay, in two or three days I should be okay and I’ll be ready to go’. That’s when he said ‘we’re thinking about resting you’ and I said ‘I’m not keen on that’ because I’d missed a bit of cricket. It got to the day before and he came to me and he said ‘we’re going to rest you’. I wasn’t that happy, but the fact is if I’d have played that Test I would’ve struggled.”Even though I was thinking I could’ve bowled the first day, the later overs in the second, third, fourth or fifth day would’ve really tested me. So that was a decision where I sat back and said to Mickey later ‘I wasn’t happy when you rested me but I understand now, because of the way I’m feeling’. If I’d gone into that Test match, I would’ve potentially done a lot of damage. In that situation it was out of my hands and needed to be.”Having been through that episode, Harris understood Mitchell Starc’s anger and confusion when he was left out of the Boxing Day Test, a long-standing ankle problem this week revealed to have been a factor. But he conceded that the alternative would be to let fast bowlers dictate their own readiness, which would likely lead to longer-term injuries as enthusiastic cricketers kept going until worn joints and limbs snapped completely.”It was the same thing as me in the West Indies, where he was saying ‘no I’m right to play’, but he’s been sore, and they’ve taken it out of his hands,” Harris said. “That’s the tough thing about it, you come up to a Boxing Day Test, a childhood dream to play for Australia let alone on Boxing Day so it is a big decision to leave him out. The players don’t want to be rested, but it’s got to be taken out of our hands, because if you could help it, you’d play every Test. There’s just times when if they’re going to do it, they’ve got all the data, so it has to be taken out of our hands.”As for the question of appropriate training and sufficient fitness, a popular topic for agitation by numerous former Australia fast bowlers during the current times of heavy injuries, Harris spoke compellingly of the standards maintained in 2013. “Our bowlers are that fit it’s not funny,” he said. “Pete Siddle and James Pattinson are unbelievably fit, Pat Cummins is fit. When I’m at my peak I’m fit. You can’t knock guys for not being fit, and not bowling enough.”Everyone keeps bringing up ‘the boys are told to bowl only a certain amount of balls’. If I want to bowl 15 overs in a net session I will bowl them. If I want to bowl six balls, I’ll bowl six balls. They give us a guide on what to bowl, but if I’m not feeling good or need to bowl more to get things right, I’ll bowl as many as I want. It’s not all about sports science running the game, it’s individuals as well, individuals choosing what they do leading into games and into training.”
