AVB – lets see the Tottenham XI you ‘could have signed’

Being linked with just about every player under the sun isn’t something that will come as any particular surprise to supporters of Tottenham Hotspur. But even by their standards, this summer’s transfer window saw the speculation that usually circles the North London club go into absolute overdrive.

A combination of a new manager, a new formation and £30million-rated departure saw Tottenham dominate the gossip columns and Daniel Levy requiring an auditor to sort out his phone bill. Seemingly no player was safe from being rumoured with a move either in or out of N17 and as always in North London, the crux of the business was left down to the last minute.

It is far, far too early to judge how the acquisitions that have been brought in will prosper, but such is the scale of players mooted with a move to White Hart Lane, we thought we’d have a look at those that haven’t made their way to Spurs; and decided to make a rival starting XI to boot.

We are at pains to disclaim that if Daniel Levy had acquired all of these players all at once, Spurs would probably be in financial trouble quicker than you could say ‘Peter Ridsdale’ and the balance of this team is more Football Manager 2012 than Villas-Boas reality.

But seeing as we’re all such gluttons for punishment, here is Tottenham’s 2012 failed transfer XI. Lining up in a shamelessly copycat 4-3-3, it’s dubious as to how they’d cope away to Stoke City, but they’re certainly a talented bunch.

If there was one game that summed up his Tottenham tenure, it was last night…

Nothing encapsulated a farcical few months for Tottenham any better than last night’s festivities under the lights at White Hart Lane. It had been such a drama filled day for those in and around the club that it was perhaps easy to forget that there was a Premier League game last night at all.

Off-field uncertainty and the brutal undermining of his position on a near daily basis has dominated Tim Sherwood’s tenure. The news that the Englishman would likely be leaving his position in the summer hardly came as a huge surprise, but the manner of it left a bitter taste in the mouths of many. Whatever you think of a Sherwood as a manager, his treatment whilst in charge of the club has been pretty disgraceful.

As much as he tried to bat away the sympathisers it was difficult not to feel sorry for a man that looked broken even after leading his side to a romping 5-1 victory over relegation threatened Sunderland:

“I can’t comment about my employment – you’ll have to ask my employers,’” he said.

“I don’t know whether it (speculation) does anyone any favours. We’ve just got to get on with it. There has been an opportunity to manage this great club and I’ve done well. I think my win percentage is higher than any Tottenham manager.”

“I don’t want anyone to feel sorry for me and it’s been a great opportunity.”

Even after what appeared to be a despondent farewell speech it was still uncertainty that dominated the mood last night. The club were quick to write off the stories as ‘speculation’ and there doesn’t seem to be any definitive decision on Sherwood’s future as yet. He continues to be a man precariously placed on the edge of the footballing precipice.

The off field antics aside, it was actually the 90 minutes at White Hart Lane last night that truly summed up everything about Sherwood’s reign at Spurs.

We had it all. There was remonstrating with the fourth official, fans and basically anyone else that would listen to Sherwood’s bursts of fiery passion. He may be tactically misguided but the drive and determination was still there for all to see last night.

The performance was typically Spurs-like; a farcically gifted opener for Sunderland followed by 50 odd minutes of drab monotony, alarm bells ringing once more. This wasn’t a game for the purist by any means, but Spurs certainly did offer fans a bit of respite from week after week of disappointment in the second half. Christian Eriksen again showing why he was the coup of the summer’s transfer window and why Spurs should be building their side around him for years to come.

It wouldn’t have been a Sherwood victory without a couple of goals from his adoptive son Emmanuel Adebayor, complete with the usual salute.

5-1 seems emphatic, but some were left unconvinced by a performance that at times lacked a certain degree of conviction. Both Paulinho and Chadli looked abject, Lennon largely anonymous and both wing backs well out of their depth at this level.

Even in victory Sherwood’s sides struggle to win everyone over.

You can lump me in with the rest that have supposedly conspired against Sherwood, but last night was not just symptomatic of his tenure, more so Spurs over the course of the whole season.

There has yet to be a game where the whole side has clicked, two or three players maximum at a time have carried Spurs over the line and this has got to be a worry going forward.

An evening dominated by passion and drama; even Sherwood’s staunchest critics would have left the game last night having at least seen the man go out with a bang.

Nothing more than a folly for some greater grand design at Spurs, it is difficult not to be sympathetic towards the departing Englishman after last night.

Otago cruise to third successive win

Otago Volts completed their victorious run in the Champions League T20 with their third comprehensive win, against Sunrisers Hyderabad

The Report by Vishal Dikshit20-Sep-2013

Otago Volts completed their victorious run in the Champions League T20 qualifiers with their third comprehensive win, against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Both teams had already made the main draw of the tournament. Otago’s bowlers first stifled the Sunrisers top order before JP Duminy took them to 143, and then their deep batting line-up was barely stretched as they won with 22 balls to spare. The victory was set up by the McCullum brothers: Nathan dismissed both Sunrisers openers during an economical spell with the new-ball and Brendon’s 33-ball fifty spurred Otago to their 13th consecutive T20 win, which brought them joint second with Surrey, behind Sialkot Stallions’ 25 successive victories.Otago were given a brisk start by openers Hamish Rutherford and Neil Broom, who attacked Ishant Sharma in his first over. Dale Steyn, however, kept it tight from the other end and had Broom caught behind for 16 in his second over. Sunrisers’ introduction of spin in the fourth over did not work, with Rutherford taking Karn Sharma for consecutive fours. Darren Sammy was introduced next and Brendon McCullum pulled him for six first ball.Rutherford’s brisk innings was also ended by Steyn, as he tried to pull down the leg side and gloved to the keeper. Amit Mishra gave Sunrisers hope when he bowled the in-form Ryan ten Doeschate with a googly, but No. 5 Jimmy Neesham eased the nerves by attacking the two legspinners over midwicket, bringing the required run rate under six.Sunrisers were running out of bowling options as Ishant, Karn Sharma and Sammy were being carted around the ground. After surviving a stumping, Brendon McCullum virtually ended the chase in the 15th over, when he clobbered Ishant for 22, reducing the equation to 8 from 30 balls. Both Brendon McCullum and Neesham were later dismissed but an Otago victory was a formality.Though they were without frontline quicks Ian Butler and James McMillan, Otago had ended Sunrisers’ prolific batting form in the tournament. Nathan McCullum opened the bowling and stifled the openers Parthiv and Shikhar Dhawan, aiming for the stumps from round the wicket. He trapped Dhawan twice in front of the stumps in his first two overs but the umpire turned both the appeals down. He was rewarded later, bowling Parthiv for 12 and getting Dhawan caught at mid-on as the batsman tried to clear the in-field.Biplab Samantray also survived two appeals, off successive deliveries, when Neil Wagner struck him in front of the stumps. He soon holed out against Michael Bracewell at long-on, where Bracewell caught the ball, threw it up, stepped over the boundary and back into play to catch it again.Sunrisers were 45 for 3 and JP Duminy and Cameron White, who came in for Thisara Perera, revived the innings with a 40-run stand. Duminy found gaps regularly and rotated the strike with White, who departed for 25 before Sammy gave them another push with two sixes in the 17th over.Duminy made a 35-ball fifty, and helped score 52 from the last five overs, but Sunrisers needed a lot more to challenge Otago.

Liverpool fans laud Mohamed Salah against Southampton

Liverpool were once again triumphant this weekend.

Southampton travelled to Anfield having won seven of their last 11 matches in the Premier League, but they were no match for the Reds in the end. Jurgen Klopp’s side won 4-0, and it now means that they have a 22-point lead at the of the table.

Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

Mohamed Salah was on top form as well. He scored twice, whilst also providing three key passes. As you can imagine, the Liverpool supporters were delighted with his display, and they took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

With a SofaScore rating of 8.9, the Egypt international led the way amongst all of the players involved on the day.

Many fans were impressed with his link-up play and his teamwork rather than just his goal-scoring credentials.

In the past the 27-year-old has been accused of being far too selfish, but here that clearly changed. It seemed that the goals gave him the freedom to concentrate on setting up his teammates as well.

With 14 goals to his name in the top flight, he may even be looking to retain the Golden Boot that he shared with Sadio Mane and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last season.

Elsewhere, Liverpool are to listen to offer for this man in the summer.

Lancashire confirm Buttler signing

Lancashire have signed England’s limited-overs wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler

Lancashire have signed England’s limited-overs wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler. The move had been widely expected after Buttler announced his decision to leave Somerset to pursue more opportunities as a keeper last week.Although he has established himself for England in ODI and T20 cricket, his progress with the gloves had been hindered by the presence of his international predecessor, Craig Kieswetter, at Somerset. The club were unwilling to guarantee Buttler the role of first-choice wicketkeeper in all formats and he was faced with a choice of playing as a specialist batsman or moving away from the county where he came through the ranks. The move will also give Buttler the chance to work with former England coach, Peter Moores, who was responsible for guiding Matt Prior, England’s Test wicketkeeper, in the early stages of his career at Sussex.Buttler said he was keen to develop his skills as a wicketkeeper batsman at Lancashire, who released Gareth Cross last week. “They have a strong squad and are very ambitious to build on this season’s achievement,” Buttler said. “The club has an exceptional coaching staff which will help me to continue to develop as a keeper-batsman.”Buttler came up through the Somerset academy system and made his first-class debut in 2009 against Lancashire. In 80 List A games, he has scored 2296 runs at an average of 51.02 and taken 74 catches. In first-class cricket, he has 2031 runs at 31.73 and has taken 82 catches. He made his ODI debut in February 2012 and has since played 19 games, scoring 298 runs and taking 30 catches and one stumping. He scored two eye-catching half-centuries in the recently completed one-day series against Australia, confirming his potential as an international batsman. In 25 T20 internationals, Buttler has scored 286 runs, since making his debut in August 2011.”It is great news Jos will be joining us and he will become part of a highly competitive squad,” Moores said. “His style of cricket will add value to the team in all formats of the game and his potential as a player is very exciting.”
