Celtic now facing instant problem in chasing key manager target Nicky Hayen

Continuing their search for their next manager, Celtic have already been hit with a problem in pursuit of Club Brugge manager Nicky Hayen, who has impressed the Bhoys during his time in Belgium.

The last thing Celtic need is a managerial saga, but they may have no choice. The Scottish Premiership champions must get their next appointment right and silencing the noise to do exactly that will be key.

That is, of course, easier said than done with several candidates already shortlisted and the likes of Chris Sutton already having their say on the vacant position.

The former Celtic star believes that Ange Postecoglou is the “obvious” choice and it’s easy to see why. The Australian won five trophies out of a possible six during his last spell at the club and is currently a free agent after lasting just 39 days at Nottingham Forest.

There will be some concerns about his recent performances in the dugout, but the Bhoys know more than anyone just how quickly Postecoglou can create success.

Another name on the reported shortlist is Kieran McKenna. The Ipswich manager took the Tractor Boys from League one all the way to the Premier League in back-to-back promotions, before suffering relegation from England’s top flight last season.

Although he has endured a tough year at Portman Road, his reputation remains intact and managerial ability clear for all to see. Whether Celtic would be able to lure him away from Ipswich remains to be seen, however, and that’s a problem they face with another candidate.

Celtic already facing Nicky Hayen problem

According to Sky Sports, Celtic are now tracking Club Brugge manager Nicky Hayen, who held Brendan Rodgers’ side to a 1-1 draw in the Champions League last November.

Rodgers upgrade: Celtic have "kamikaze" title-winning manager on the radar

Celtic have a manager on their radar who could come in as a big upgrade on Brendan Rodgers.

ByDan Emery Oct 29, 2025

The 45-year-old has impressed in Belgium and would have no trouble convincing those at Celtic Park that he’s the right man for the job after smashing Rangers 9-1 on aggregate in the Champions League qualifiers back in August. Alas, there still lies one problem.

Luring Hayen away from Brugge could yet prove to be a difficult task and that instantly hands Celtic an obstacle that they’ll have to overcome if he emerges as their top choice.

Celtic already watched on as Rangers endured managerial chaos and may choose to avoid taking a similar path. If that does prove to be the case, then Hayen could become an unlikely candidate.

It’s clear why Brugge will be so desperate to keep their young manager, too. Speaking to The Guardian in January, the owner of Haverfordwest, Rob Edwards, who worked with Hayen at the Welsh club before he set off for Belgium said: “He’s a workaholic and that rubs off on players, it rubs off on staff and it gets everyone behind you if you lead from the front.

“I always knew he was going to go off somewhere else. We didn’t have him that long, but to see what he’s achieved since then makes us all really proud.”

Konstas, Peake, McSweeney named in Australia A squad for India tour

Ashes hopefuls Weatherald, Harris, Bancroft, Renshaw not included as the squad is a look towards the 2027 Test tour of India, with Connolly, Murphy and Rocchiccioli included as spinners

Alex Malcolm07-Aug-2025Sam Konstas’ bid to retain his Test place this summer will begin in India as he was named in the 14-man Australia A squad that will play India A in two red-ball four-day matches in Lucknow in September, albeit the squad has been selected with an eye towards Australia’s 2027 Test tour rather than the upcoming Ashes.Konstas was named alongside fellow Test opening candidate Nathan McSweeney and fellow teenager Oliver Peake in the squad. Promising Victoria opener Campbell Kellaway was also included among the batting group. Jake Weatherald, Jason Sangha and Kurtis Patterson, who all featured and performed well in the recent Australia A series against Sri Lanka A, were not included.Australian openers with previous Test experience, Marcus Harris, Cameron Bancroft and Matt Renshaw, were also not included in the squad. Renshaw has been on two Test tours to India previously while Bancroft has previously toured India with Australia A including making 150 in an unofficial Test in Chennai in 2015 against an India A team that featured nine Indian Test players.Related

Konstas will play for Australia again, but will he play the Ashes this year?

It is highly unlikely that performances in India against India A in September will have any bearing on Ashes selection with the national selectors already on record saying that the first three Sheffield Shield rounds will be of most relevance. The squad has clearly been selected with a longer-term view of giving younger players experience in Indian conditions with Australia due to tour there for a five-match Test series in January-February of 2027, when the composition of Australia’s top six may look slightly different with Usman Khawaja very unlikely to still be playing by that point while Steven Smith turns 38 in June 2027.”The subcontinent provides many unique challenges and the opportunity to utilise different skills with bat and ball,” chairman of selectors George Bailey said.”We hope repeated experiences in these conditions will assist players in developing an effective method and understanding of their game for future sub-continent tours.”Test offspinner Todd Murphy was included in the squad having taken 14 wickets in four Tests in India in 2023, including a seven on Test debut in Nagpur. Fellow offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli will also get a chance to impress having been to the MRF Academy last year and played for Australia A previously. Both men missed the recent series against Sri Lanka A due to short-term stints in county cricket in England.Left-arm-spinning allrounder Cooper Connolly, who made his Test debut in Sri Lanka earlier this year, will get the chance to gain some valuable subcontinent experience. Fraser-McGurk is being developed as a back-up wicketkeeper for the T20I team having worked on his keeping with Australia’s fielding/keeping coach Andre Borovec on recent tours.Captains have yet to be named but there are a host of options given three state captains in McSweeney, Edwards and Sutherland will tour while Hardie has also previously led Australia A in a first-class game in New Zealand and captained Perth Scorchers.Australia A four-day squadXavier Bartlett, Cooper Connolly, Jack Edwards, Aaron Hardie, Campbell Kellaway, Sam Konstas, Nathan McSweeney, Lance Morris, Todd Murphy, Fergus O’Neill, Oliver Peake, Josh Philippe, Corey Rocchiccioli, Liam ScottAustralia A one-day squadCooper Connolly, Harry Dixon, Jack Edwards, Sam Elliott, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Aaron Hardie, Mackenzie Harvey, Todd Murphy, Tanveer Sangha, Liam Scott, Lachie Shaw, Tom Straker, Will Sutherland, Callum Vidler

Players Gave Aaron Judge, Cal Raleigh the Most Votes for MLB All-Star Game

The 2025 MLB All-Star Game rosters are set, and now we know who the league's players voted for.

The results of player balloting have been released and there are few surprises, especially at the top.

Players overwhelmingly voted for New York Yankees star Aaron Judge to get in, as he garnered the most votes with 898. Second in player voting is a man having an unbelievable season, Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh, who checked in with 823 votes. Third was Cleveland Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez (746), and fourth was Minnesota Twins center fielder Byron Buxton (700).

In the National League, Chicago Cubs phenom Pete Crow-Armstrong led the way with 636 votes, while Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte was second (653), and Los Angeles Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani was third (564). It's crazy to not see Ohtani in first place.

On the pitching side, players gave Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal the most votes (365), while Pittsburgh Pirates righty Paul Skenes led voting in the National League (289).

The full voting results are below.

The 2025 MLB All-Star Game will take place on July 15.

'There he is!' – Maya Jama cheers on boyfriend Ruben Dias as Man City beat Liverpool after viewing £4m mansion with Portuguese defender

Maya Jama was among those in attendance at the Etihad Stadium as Manchester City claimed an impressive 3-0 victory over Liverpool. The TV presenter was in the crowd to cheer on boyfriend Ruben Dias. The Portuguese defender helped Pep Guardiola’s side to a clean sheet on home soil having recently been spotted viewing a £4 million mansion with Jama.

A-list fan: Jama cheers City to victory over Liverpool

City moved to within four points of table-topping Arsenal as they picked up three precious points against their modern-day rivals. Erling Haaland, Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku were on target for the Blues as they piled more misery on the reigning Premier League champions.

Jama was given plenty to cheer in the stands, with the Love Island host taking in another trip to the Etihad. She has been a regular at City matches this season, with Dias taking in 15 appearances across all competitions. He has now reached another international break and will be heading off on 2026 World Cup qualifying duty with Portugal.

AdvertisementHouse hunting: Jama ready to move in with Dias

Jama, who posted a video on social media of City and Liverpool players emerging from the tunnel ahead of their crunch clash and could be heard saying “there he is” as Dias lined up on the field, may decide to take in another Portugal fixture having been spotted watching the defender in international action, too. A date with the Republic of Ireland in Dublin is next on the agenda for them.

A break in club action for Dias could also provide him with more time to check out houses with Jama. According to , they have already taken a look around a stunning mansion in Cheshire that was the top prize in an Omaze draw.

The 6,300 square foot, four-bedroom abode boasts panoramic views, landscaped gardens and a “luxury indoor leisure suite”. The house would not come cheap, if renting or buying, but Dias and Jama are looking to put down roots together – with the latter ready to move out of London and head north.

Famous neighbours: Mansion is in swanky Cheshire

A source has told The Sun: “It's the third time Ruben and Maya have looked at the property. They spent about two hours there on Wednesday. It's quite a long time to spend on a viewing, but the house is very captivating.

“Ruben arrived in his Lamborghini and Maya came separately in a chauffeur-driven Mercedes. They looked deep in thought when they left together. The house is up for rent at around £20,000 a month, but also up for sale if the price is right. They are very happy together and want to move into a place together which they can call home.”

Emily Ward, who won the mansion in question from a £25 Omaze ticket, said of the property that she is looking to sell: “The house is spectacular — I can see why it’s so popular with millionaire footballers. It will be quite surreal popping out to buy a pint of milk and bumping into Wayne or Coleen Rooney.” Alongside the Rooneys, Alderley Edge has also been home down the years to David and Victoria Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kyle Walker and Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

Getty/GOALRomantic breaks: Dias & Jama met at MTV awards

Dias recently told of his relationship with Jama – who he met at the MTV European Music Awards in November 2024 – and whether life in the public eye is a problem: “No, I think that's the last thing you think about. We are just both aware of it, and there's no way around it. But at the end of the day, you don't make it about it. You make it about everything else, and then that's an extra you have to deal with and, obviously, be smart with it.”

Dias and Jama have enjoyed a number of romantic breaks together and are ready to take their relationship to the next level, with an insider having previously told The Sun: “Maya loves the down-to-earth nature of Manchester, as well as the glamour of the football and WAG scene. Bristol and London will always be special to her, but she is loving spending more time in Manchester with Ruben.”

Five Most Glaring Needs for National League Contenders Before the Trade Deadline

The All-Star break is behind us and the 2025 MLB season is heading for the home stretch. With 15 teams legitimately in contention for Wild Card spots, the race to the finish could get hectic, which might make this one of the most active trade deadlines in recent years.

Over the next few weeks contenders will attempt to position themselves for the stretch run by making deals to fill needs. What follows is a look at the five most glaring holes National League contenders have as we head toward the deadline.

Los Angeles Dodgers: Starting Pitcher

Despite a rash of injuries to their pitching staff, the Dodgers still look like a juggernaut capable of repeating as World Series champions. With Tyler Glasnow back, Blake Snell close to returning and Shohei Ohtani working himself back into shape, things are beginning to look much better for their starting rotation. But can they trust it? L.A.'s rotation pieces all have lengthy injury histories and there's a pretty good chance they don't remain healthy for the rest of the season. With a ton of organizational depth and a stock farm system, the Dodgers can aim high at the deadline.

Prices will be sky-high for good rotation pieces, but the Dodgers can pay whatever it takes to improve. If they want to become the first back-to-back World Series champions since the Yankees won three straight from 1998 to 2000, they should be willing to add to their rotation.

Philadelphia Phillies: Bullpen Help

The Phillies reached the break with a 1/2-game lead over the New York Mets for supremacy in the NL East, and those two teams should be slugging it out for the rest of the season. If Philadelphia wants to prevail, it must address its biggest weakness. The Phillies' bullpen currently ranks 23rd in ERA (4.38) and has blown 17 saves in 44 opportunities. None of the team's relievers has an fWAR of 1.0 or better. The team's revolving door at closer hasn't helped things.

There will be relievers aplenty to go around, but they won't be cheap. That said, after watching helplessly as the Mets scored 19 runs in the sixth inning or later during their NLDS series in 2024, the Phillies can't enter the postseason with a weak bullpen.

Chicago Cubs: Starting Pitcher

The Cubs have one of MLB's best offenses and come out of the break a game up on the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. The team's starting rotation, which has a Justin Steele-sized hole. With Steele out for the year following elbow surgery, Chicago's rotation has had its ups and downs. Matthew Boyd and Shota Imanaga have been excellent, but the team's starters rank 18th in baseball in ERA (4.06) and have allowed the second-most home runs (84).

It's highly likely the Cubs only have Kyle Tucker for the next few months, as he's set to seek an enormous contract in free agency. While he's still in town and they have an elite offense, the franchise should go all-in. Netting a top-tier starting pitcher could be the difference between the Cubs making a run to the World Series or suffering an early exit in the postseason.

New York Mets: Center Fielder

Yes, the Mets could use another starting pitcher, but the rotation looks much healthier now, led by Kodai Senga, David Peterson, and Clay Holmes. The real issue is the team's lack of production from center field. Tyrone Taylor has played 85 games in center and has an OPS of .580. There isn't a good option to replace him on the roster, so New York needs to go shopping.

Steve Cohen didn't give Juan Soto $765 million to have a flawed roster, the team's owner is almost certain to go all-in during his superstar's prime. There are a number of center fielders out there the Mets could make offers on, with Luis Robert and Cedric Mullins leading the list.

San Diego Padres: Catcher

While left field is also a major hole for the Friars, nothing is more pressing than San Diego finding a catcher that can hit. So far this season, Padres catchers have a combined WAR of -0.9, worst in baseball. The combination of Elias Diaz and Martin Maldonado has been a flop, and something has to change at the position. General manager A.J. Preller is always looking to wheel and deal, and he'll earn his paycheck if he can find a reliable backstop.

Catchers who can hit are a rare commodity in baseball these days and finding one won't be cheap. But even a league-average catcher would be a massive improvement for the Padres at this point.

'We have to talk to Lionel Messi first' – Former Barcelona star reveals how club legend 'had the power' to stop his shock transfer

Former Barcelona star Kevin-Prince Boateng revealed how Lionel Messi "had the power" to block his shock transfer to the Catalan club. The Blaugrana signed the striker from Sassuolo in January 2019, initially on loan with an €8 million option to buy. Now, speaking on the YouTube podcast Unscripted, Boateng has revealed that the transfer only went ahead after Messi gave his blessing.

Under scrutiny at Barcelona

When Boateng arrived in Spain, he was already under the scanner. Old quotes resurfaced suggesting he had grown up admiring Real Madrid, and had even said years earlier that he could have played for Los Blancos had he applied himself more diligently. However, he quickly brushed those aside during his first press conference.

"I am a Barcelona player and Lionel Messi is the best player in this world and every world," the Germany-born former Ghana international told reporters. "Why are you laughing? That's the truth, he has shown that with all that he has won in the last 10 years. It's a great honour [to be at Barcelona] because Messi is the best player in the world, and Luis Suarez the best striker in the world. They play amazingly and being able to play by their side is a great gift."

He added: "At my age, the number nine role is perfect for me, but for a coach, I think a player like me is a plus because I can play in different positions, but I feel very good as a number nine. I have not talked to the coach [Ernesto Valverde], but I know I have not come to play in the starting line because there are incredible players in this team. I'm here because of my experience and to help. I'm here to play well and sign on for more years here, that's my goal."

AdvertisementGetty Images Sport"If Messi said no, it was over"

Now, Boateng has described in vivid detail the moment the near-finalised transfer was abruptly paused. All the principal decision-makers at the club, president Josep Maria Bartomeu, manager Ernesto Valverde, and both sporting directors, including Eric Abidal, had given full approval. Everything appeared ready for Boateng to put pen to paper. But then came the shock.

"If Messi had said no, the transfer wouldn't have happened," he asserted on the YouTube podcast . "At the time, there were two sporting directors. One of them was Eric Abidal, and he said, 'Yes, we want you.' The other sporting director said, 'We want you'. The president (Bartomeu) wanted me, the coach (Valverde) too, so I said, 'Perfect, let's sign tomorrow!' They replied, 'No, we have to talk to Leo first.' He had that power. I went to sleep hoping Messi would approve my signing. If he had refused, I wouldn't have signed for Barcelona."

The Real Madrid "lie" and a carefully managed image

Speaking later to Rio Ferdinand on , Boateng revealed that Real Madrid had been his favourite club growing up, but insisted that saying so upon arriving in Catalonia would have been impossible.

On being asked which was his favourite club, he said: "I supported Hertha Berlin, where I grew up and then, sorry, Blaugrana…Barcelona fans gonna hate me now, but Real Madrid. I couldn't say that in the press conference [when I signed for Barcelona]. They told me I could never say that. Because otherwise we can't play you."

He added: "Two years before, when I was at Las Palmas, they asked me in a press conference who was the best player in the world and I said 'in this world Ronaldo, in the galaxy Messi' and then they asked me my favourite club and I said 'Real Madrid'. Then, the first question was who is your favourite club, I said ‘Barcelona’. I think anyone would have done the same, I wanted to pull on that shirt one time at Camp Nou. It's one of the biggest lies I've ever told."

Ferdinand, himself no stranger to football politics, responded: "Footballers lie…we lie all the time, man."

AFPShort spell but a big achievement

Boateng’s on-field impact for Barcelona was limited to just four appearances, none of them particularly memorable. But he did finish the season with a La Liga winners’ medal. For a player who had journeyed through Las Palmas, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Sassuolo, it was an extraordinary late-career chapter.

Changing of the guard: Pune 2024 a window into New Zealand's future

Under new captain Latham, the likes of O’Rourke and Ravindra have shown what they can do, and there are others knocking on the door

Deivarayan Muthu27-Oct-20245:09

Latham: Immensely proud moment for this group

At 3.55pm local time in Pune on Saturday, Tom Latham’s New Zealand did the unthinkable by beating India in India in a Test series. Before 2024, New Zealand had visited India for 12 Test series across 69 years without ever winning one. Before 2024, they had two Test wins in India in 36 years. Now, in a space of less than two weeks, New Zealand have doubled that tally and made history. After Tim Southee coolly took the winning catch at the edge of the long-on boundary to dismiss Ravindra Jadeja, Latham sprinted all the way from leg slip to embrace him. Having stepped down as captain ahead of the Test series in India, Southee was no longer a certain starter in spin-friendly Indian conditions. But, as it turned out, he had the first say under cloudy skies in Bengaluru and the final say under cloudless skies in Pune.More than three years ago, when Ross Taylor hit the winning runs for New Zealand in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against India in Southampton, he exchanged hugs and glove-punches with Kane Williamson. This image of the pair walking off the ground together became iconic, with the New Zealand public even suggesting it should be immortalised as a statue at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.ESPNcricinfo LtdThe bear hug between Latham, Southee and Daryl Mitchell in Pune was perhaps just as iconic, with their screams of joy reverberating around the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium, where more than 20,000 Indian spectators were stunned into silence.Southee was the only fast bowler from both teams to have taken a wicket in Pune. Latham was the only batter from both sides to have scored more than 80. The pair is the last link to New Zealand’s golden generation. Kane Williamson, who missed the first two Tests of the ongoing India series with a groin injury, has knocked back his New Zealand central contract, as have Trent Boult, Devon Conway, Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham. Meanwhile, Taylor, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling and Colin de Grandhomme have all retired from international cricket.Related

Transitions are always tricky and New Zealand have a limited talent pool, but they have found ways to invest in their next line of players. And it felt like Pune 2024 marked the beginning of a new era, with some old, familiar faces still around to oversee the transition.”I guess in cricket teams you have times where you’re grouped together a long time,” Latham said at his post-match press conference. “I guess around that World Test Championship, the group had been together for a long time and we obviously had guys retire, we’ve had guys move on. We’ve obviously seen a new wave of players come through and I think for them to come in and perform straightaway has been the most pleasing thing. You’ve obviously still got a mix of older guys or more experienced guys and some youth, which is awesome.”I guess the likes of Will O’Rourke and Rachin [Ravindra], those two guys are going to play a lot of cricket for New Zealand. It’s obviously really special for them to come here and be in this position. Certainly really proud of this group and everyone’s proud of each other.”Everybody wants a bit of Mitchell Santner•AFP/Getty ImagesLatham and Mitchell beamed with pride every time they spoke to the Indian reporters about their Canterbury team-mate O’Rourke’s potential. In his first Test in India, O’Rourke, 23, took out Virat Kohli for a duck on his way to match figures of 7 for 114. Kohli’s dismissal had New Zealand’s planning written all over it. They placed their best fielder Glenn Phillips at leg slip and had their tallest bowler bouncing him out in Bengaluru. They were braced for the conditions changing in Pune and once again made a percentage call by bringing in Mitchell Santner and that paid off handsomely too.Everything has to come together perfectly for wins like these and they did, which is having quite an effect back home.

Latham himself was left searching for words when asked for his immediate reactions. Peter Cader, the only travelling reporter from New Zealand for the Pune Test, broke into a dance at the press conference to celebrate the team’s unprecedented success.Geoff, one among a handful of travelling fans from New Zealand – he had come over from Thames, a small town southwest of Auckland – was also left overwhelmed with emotion. “Earlier in May, I’d made up my mind to follow this New Zealand team in India,” he said. “I’m staggered to witness this. The other great game I remember watching from the ground was the win around 1980 [1978], when we beat England at the Basin Reserve.”This ranks well above that. Beating England in Wellington is great but beating India in India is far above that. I will go back, sit in the hotel, grab a beer and reflect on the special evening. I feel very privileged to be here.”New Zealand fan Geoff felt “privileged” to see his team win a Test series in India•ESPNcricinfo/Deivarayan MuthuIt will take a while to sink in for everyone, what this team has achieved. But the Black Caps assembly line will not stop whirring in the background, searching for talent that can take their success forward. Ravindra has already made it to the big time. Auckland’s Ben Lister has been tipped to fill the Boult-sized void in white-ball cricket, while Wellington’s tearaway Ben Sears, who was ruled out of this Test series in India, is capable of becoming the next Lockie Ferguson.Tim Robinson, who recently made his New Zealand and Caribbean Premier League (CPL) debuts, has the type of explosive power that made Guptill a force at the top in limited-overs cricket. Nathan Smith could potentially perform the all-round role that Colin de Grandhomme used to do. And now all of them will believe that anything truly is possible, thanks to what Latham and his men have done in India.

Forget Haaland & Foden: 41-touch star had "his best game in a Man City shirt"

Manchester City picked up another three points in the Champions League with a 4-1 home win over German side Borussia Dortmund.

Pep Guardiola’s side scored twice in either half to propel themselves up to fourth in the table and maintain their unbeaten record.

City got into their groove pretty quickly at the Etihad Stadium. It took just 22 minutes for them to take the lead, with Phil Foden firing home from outside the penalty area into the bottom left corner.

Just seven minutes later, City had their second, and to nobody’s surprise, it was Erling Haaland who bagged the goal. Criminally, the Norwegian centre-forward was given acres of space in the box by his old side, slamming home his effort after Jeremy Doku pulled the ball back across the box.

Foden had his second goal just before the hour mark, once again tucking his effort into the bottom left corner. Dortmund pulled one back in the 72nd minute, but Rayan Cherki’s stoppage-time goal off the bench sealed the win for the Cityzens.

It was a strong showing from City, with Haaland and Foden two of the standouts for Guardiola’s side.

How Haaland and Foden downed Dortmund

Is there anyone who can stop Haaland? Well, his former side couldn’t, as he scored his 18th goal of the season in just 14 games. The striker, who captained City on the night, has bagged five times in the Champions League already this term.

His performance clearly impressed Simon Bajkowski, chief City journalist for the Manchester Evening News. He gave the Citizens number 9 a post-match rating of 8/10, and said his night’s work was “brilliant again.”

As for Foden, his two goals, which were carbon copies of each other, perfectly encapsulated what makes him so good.

Operating in the right half-space, the England international showed great technical ability to carve out both chances, which he took with great poise.

His stats from the game are a great reflection of how well he played. City’s number 47 was constantly involved, having 71 touches and creating three chances. He also worked hard off the ball, making five recoveries.

The City duo were standouts for Guardiola’s side on Wednesday, but one of their teammates also shone.

Man City star is as important as Foden & Haaland

Guardiola will surely be pleased to see such a big win against an opponent who could have proved to be a tough test. The performances from Haaland, Foden and Cherki off the bench are encouraging signs for the Citizens.

It was not just those three who impressed, though. Midfielder Tijjani Reijnders put in a strong showing at the Etihad Stadium. He set up both of Foden’s goals, pulling the strings from an advanced midfield position.

The Dutchman also has some impressive numbers from the game. Like Foden, Reijnders created three chances and looked after the ball well in midfield with a pass accuracy of 88%. He also won two out of three ground duels and made things tough for the visitors when they had the ball in the centre of the park.

It was a superb performance from Reijnders, which stood out to Citizens fan page over on X, City Chief. They described it as a “masterclass” in the midfield, and said it was “easily his best performance in a City shirt so far.”

After a night’s work as good as that from the 27-year-old, it is easy to see why he can be as important as Haaland and Foden. He brings plenty of control and helps City sustain attacks.

On top of that, the Netherlands international has a good relationship with another great technical player, Foden. According to Squawka, it is the first time the England international has bagged twice in the Champions League match, and the first time Reijnders has assisted two in a game in the same competition.

That is surely no coincidence. That relationship, plus the creative influence and technical quality, Reijnders adds to the City side, makes him one of their most important players, as he showed against Dortmund.

De Zorzi and Stubbs – SA identify their horses for Asian courses

Both batters have been good against spin in Pakistan and give South Africa hope ahead of tours to India and Sri Lanka

Firdose Moonda21-Oct-2025International cricket tours are not research trips but if they were, South Africa would mark the Pakistan Tests as a success because of what it has taught them about their batters. Especially Tony de Zorzi. With a century in Lahore and 55 in Rawalpindi, as things stand, de Zorzi is the series’ leading run-scorer and has kept South Africa in the game in both first innings. Remarkably, de Zorzi has a much higher Test average in the subcontinent – 70.50 – than he does on home soil, where he averages just 14.53. Both his Test hundreds and one of his three fifties have come in Asia and one other in the West Indies, where conditions are also slow and low. It’s all a bit of an anomaly given that de Zorzi grew up on the Highveld and spent the early parts of his career playing on pacy, bouncy strips but has developed a game plan that works in Asia and it’s an obvious one: “Tony is a really good player of spin. He sweeps well, reverse sweeps well and uses his feet well,” Ashwell Prince, South Africa’s batting coach, who has also coached de Zorzi at domestic level, said.He is also willing to be patient, as evident from his early engagements in his innings in Rawalpindi. The first ball he faced, from Sajid Khan, whizzed past the shoulder of his bat as he hung back in his crease in defence. From then, de Zorzi tried to get forward to defend as much as possible and scored only five runs off the first 22 balls he faced. In that, was one that should have got him out. Pakistan did not review an Asif Afridi delivery that was shorter in length, kept de Zorzi on his back foot and spun into his pad. They appealed for a catch at short leg but a review on the lbw would have meant this story may have been about something else entirely. But luck is part of the game and what players do with it can be more important than whether they have it. De Zorzi made it work for him.Three overs after the non-dismissal, he saw an opportunity to change tempo, walked across his stumps and hit Sajid through deep backward square for four. South Africa were scoring at the pedestrian rate of 2.35 runs an over before that shot, and they were closer to three runs an over by the end of the day.Related

Whether de Zorzi got it right when it came to his balance between attack and defence is a matter of opinion. Prince’s is that de Zorzi, in just his 15th Test, is still discovering how to do things but is learning fast. “I don’t think with three days to go it’s necessary to go a lot quicker but the important thing is for every batter who goes out there to find his natural rhythm of play,” Prince said. “What we try and emphasise is finding your tempo and marrying strong defence with good scoring opportunities. It’s important for all of them to know where their singles are and to understand which kind of boundary options they may be looking at but as far as time is concerned I don’t think there’s any rush.”De Zorzi main scoring shot is the sweep – and according to ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball data, he has scored 35.1% of his 423 runs in Asia using that shot – and he scores mostly square of the wicket. In this innings, 36 off his 55 runs came between point and covers or short fine and midwicket and he scored them off 21 balls. His is a contrasting wagon wheel to his partner – Tristan Stubbs’ – an off-side dominant batter, who is the other player that has passed on the South African report card. Before this Test, Stubbs had got into double figures only once in his last nine Test innings and appeared completely out of sorts. He had been shifted from No. 3 – a position given to him in August last year and then taken away in December – to No.4 to No.5 and his role was unclear. With Wiaan Mulder left out of his Test to accommodate the left-arm seam-bowling allrounder Marco Jansen, Stubbs was pushed back up to No. 3 and showed determination just to stay there. Can Tristan Stubbs become South Africa’s long-term No. 3?•AFP/Getty ImagesHe scored 13 runs off the first 60 balls he faced before de Zorzi played that shot off Sajid and Stubbs followed shit when he shimmied down the pitch to hit Sajid through the covers. Though he still accumulated at a conservative pace, Stubbs found runs when he moved his feet: lunging forward and lowering one knee to sweep Asif over square leg, and occasionally when he advanced on bowlers. The pillar of this innings, though, was defence. Stubbs faced 140 dot balls, only eight fewer than in the knock he played against Sri Lanka in Durban, when he scored 100. This is already his third-longest Test innings by balls faced, 14 short of his knock in Chattogram, where he also scored a century. There will be pressure on him to convert this into three figures too but that isn’t the only goal.At this stage of his career, Stubbs just needs to make a case for where he should bat in the Test team and why and this could be the innings that does that. “He showed great character,” Prince said. “He was a little clearer in his game plan, understood his scoring opportunities and obviously was strong on defence. He’s also been quite positive in terms of his footwork, back and forth and using the crease and when he wanted to hit the ball in the air, there was commitment in that so he’s gone pretty well.”Prince said Stubbs sees being back at No. 3 as a “great opportunity,” but that it doesn’t mean he has the spot back permanently. “We’ve always seen him as a player who’s got a pretty decent game against spin. Whether he continues in that position in the future will be determined by where we play and the conditions that we face.”And that may be South Africa’s biggest lesson about their batting from this trip. Just as Lungi Ngidi was left out of this series so South Africa could stack their squad with spinners, the same thinking can apply to South Africa’s batting line-up and the way they are talking suggests it could. “The No. 3 position would fluctuate in terms of where we are playing,” Prince said. “We have to marry people in terms of horses for courses approach.”In that case, two of the horses for this kind of course have been identified. Given that between the Chattogram Test last year where de Zorzi scored his first hundred and the Lahore one, he had only crossed 30 once in nine Test innings, there is a case to be made that when South Africa play in the subcontinent, de Zorzi should be in the XI but when they are in SENA countries, he may not be. Instead, someone like David Bedingham, who has sat on the bench this series, could be considered then. The same could apply to Stubbs and the inclusion of captain Temba Bavuma, when he becomes available post-injury could then be another talking point. All this information South Africa can use for future trips to the subcontinent, and there are two more of them in this WTC cycle, which makes it valuable. What they will wish is that is what they already had coming into this contest. For Prince, there is still time for South Africa to show they can apply what they have learnt in this match and maybe, to spring a great surprise. “One more big partnership – something close to 100 runs brings us close to Pakistan’s score and the potential is there to get 40 or 50 runs ahead. It might not sound a lot but under these circumstances it could be a lot.”

Tottenham line up transfer kitty as Napoli set huge Scott McTominay demand

Tottenham Hotspur will look to kick on once the January transfer window opens and could be willing to put their money where their mouth is to sign Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay, but circumstances will need to align.

The Lilywhites have become a thorn in the side of many Premier League outfits this campaign due to their physicality and new-found ability to convert from set-pieces, making them a dangerous opposition to come up against on any given day.

Mohammed Kudus has shone in the forward areas and Spurs have earned a new lease of life after their domestic form last term, with Thomas Frank deserving of credit for managing to solidify the Lilywhites in all areas.

Despite his mixed start to life in North London, the Dane made clear before his side took on Chelsea that Xavi Simons is another figure he expects to come to life in the heart of his side.

He said: “Yes. No doubt about that. I’m not in doubt that Xavi will perform very well for us. That is down to him, to me, to the team, to everyone to get it done. The one thing you don’t have in football is time, but it will take time.

“It’s completely natural. Sometimes we can’t talk about processes and time and all that, but the reality is you need it, everyone needs it. I’m confident. I’m sure it will happen.”

Frank’s outfit appear to be solid from middle to front, that much is true, but there is always room for improvement when you are eyeing a slot in the Champions League places.

With that in mind, Spurs are now plotting a January bid for a star who they may be set to put their large transfer kitty towards.

Tottenham line up Scott McTominay amid huge Napoli demands

According to Football Insider, Tottenham will look to put their sizeable transfer kitty towards signing Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay, who could be at the centre of an intriguing saga involving both parties.

Fabio Paratici has set his sights on the Scotland international and the money on offer could be a lure for the former Manchester United man to return to the Premier League. However, Pete O’Rourke believes it would take a ‘huge’ statement of intent from Spurs to push a deal over the line.

He said: “Napoli won’t want to weaken their squad by losing such an important player like Scott McTominay. He’s under contract until 2028, so, to even consider selling him would be a huge fee as well.”

Intriguingly, the same report has floated the idea of Kobbie Mainoo joining Napoli, which could pave the way for movement to take place elsewhere, albeit that remains unlikely for now.

Tottenham are also eyeing another Serie A goalscorer

Still, McTominay has been a titan since joining the reigning Serie A champions in 2024 and has continued that form into this term, placing seven of his 16 shots taken on target, per Fotmob, hence why Frank is keen to do a deal.
