The Lowdown: Conte going shopping

The Lilywhites are expected to be busy in the summer transfer market. A point against Norwich City in Sunday’s Premier League finale would book their place in the Champions League next season, meaning Antonio Conte will need to strengthen his squad.

As many as six new signings are likely to come in, and while much of the focus is said to be on acquiring a new centre-back, the Lilywhites are a little light in the playmaker department.

According to Pedulla, writing on his personal Twitter account, Mkhitaryan wants to extend his contract at Roma, which expires this summer.

However, a ‘surprise’ move could be on the cards if that doesn’t happen, as the journalist says to ‘watch out’ for Inter and Napoli in Italy and Tottenham and Aston Villa in England.

The Verdict: Sneaky good signing?

Things may not have worked out for Mkhitaryan during his last stint in England, but he still managed to provide 22 goals and 24 assists across 122 appearances with Manchester United and Arsenal, even drawing praise for ‘dominating’ the competition from Red Devils teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Back in Italy, the 33 year-old has gone from strength to strength, racking up 57 goal involvements for Jose Mourinho’s side in 116 games, and he has also been crowned Armenia’s player of the year a whopping ten times.

Creating over a chance per game in Serie A this season, the experienced 95-cap man, while not a long-term solution, would add a different kind of threat to Conte’s side along with years of experience across domestic and European competitions.

Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa is set to miss the opening weeks of the 2022/23 Premier League season after sustaining a knee injury last weekend against Crystal Palace that will keep the Englishman sidelined for 12-16 weeks.

What’s the latest?

As tweeted by Birmingham Live’s Ashley Preece following Steven Gerrard’s pre-Burnley press conference, the 24-year-old has sustained a “serious” knee injury and will miss all of pre-season as well as the opening stages of the next Premier League campaign.

The Villa boss stated: “We’re quite relieved because we thought we were dealing with an ACL” whilst also revealing that Emi Martinez picked up an injury in training and Robin Olsen could be set for his Villa debut in between the sticks.

The Villans have just two matches left this campaign, this evening’s home clash with the Clarets before a trip to Manchester City on Sunday.

However, the injury has come at an awful time for Konsa who will have to work extra hard to catch up for when the new season comes around given him missing out on pre-season training.

Bad news

Although the West Midlands outfit have been frustratingly inconsistent at times this season, Konsa has had a decent campaign this term.

The Englishman has won 64% of his duels in the Premier League whilst averaging 0.5 interceptions, 0.9 tackles and 2.8 clearances a match in 29 top-flight appearances.

However, the injury could trigger long-term issues for Konsa’s Villa tenure.

There have been reports that the 24-year-old could depart Villa Park this summer with Gerrard planning a major squad overhaul, particularly in defence with his side conceding 50 times in 36 matches this season.

Therefore, Villa may still go ahead and sign new defenders that will beat Konsa to a starting spot whilst the Englishman is now unlikely to be bought this summer given his injury and the uncertainties that could bring.

It’s a major blow for the defender and could lead to an even greater predicament that will surely have supporters gutted.

Celtic are back in action for the final time this season on Saturday as they take on Motherwell in their first game since being crowned Premiership champions in midweek.

Their 1-1 draw against Dundee United at Tannadice was enough to seal the league title and officially reclaim domestic superiority from their Glasgow arch-rivals.

Giorgos Giakoumakis put the Hoops ahead less than 10 minutes into the second half on Wednesday, only for the home side to find an equaliser later on. Despite this slight hiccup, a point was all that was needed to confirm Celtic’s status as league champions.

Looking ahead to tomorrow’s clash, it seems as though the Hoops may have been handed a potential boost which could improve their chances of securing another victory in front of their home fans before the campaign draws to a close.

What’s the news?

Speaking in his latest press conference on Friday ahead of the clash, Motherwell manager Graham Alexander was discussing the current situation regarding his squad.

He said: “We’ve had a few calls in between Wednesday and today, with a couple more players dropping out with illness, which has been going around for a couple of weeks now.

“Unfortunately, it has been contagious and people have been breaking down with it, so we’ll have to wait until tomorrow morning to see who is OK and sort of pick a team from that, really.”

Taking this into account, it turns out that the Motherwell squad are not in the best shape, with some players potentially out of tomorrow’s game through illness, which is not an ideal situation for the travelling side.

In the three league games that Celtic have played against the Well this season, Ange Postecoglou’s side have won every time, scoring seven goals and keeping a clean sheet in all three.

Not knowing who may or may not be available to play would be a big concern for Alexander and his side, who presumably will be looking to rain on Celtic’s parade by picking up a draw or a win.

On the flip side, this could well play into the hands of Postecoglou the Hoops, who may now have a smoother game ahead of them to end their impressive season, which would surely delight the Parkhead faithful on what will be a day of celebration.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla – There it is. 

That is what the footballing world wanted, and what MLS perhaps needed. Messi has his first MLS Cup. If there was ever a shred of doubt about Messi’s MLS legacy – if the records, the MVP award (with another likely on the way), and the résumé weren’t convincing enough – then Saturday offered the definitive answer.

The biggest trophy this league can give now sits in his hands, and soon after, above his head. Florida has its first MLS champion. 

And it was deserved. The Argentine provided three decisive moments of magic in a 3-1 win over a resilient Vancouver Whitecaps side.

Give Vancouver some credit here. They are a good football team that plays the game in the right way. But this was Miami’s day. There are such things as narratives in soccer. They seldom pan out. But this was one that came together handsomely. Miami steadily improved over the course of the season. They lost, sometimes embarrassingly, and learned from those defeats. And when it came to it, an otherwise flawed and inexperienced manager in Javier Mascherano, made some gutsy and correct decisions. For that, he deserves immense credit. Still, in the final game at a strange skeletal stadium that they have called home for three years, Miami claimed the thing that they have coveted since the second Messi stepped his foot in the United States. 

This was also about Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, who ended their careers, appropriately, with trophies. It might also be the end for Luis Suarez – at least in Miami, who proved in omission that he may not be needed here anymore. Yet the lasting image will be of Leo, lifting that trophy, a beaming smile across his face. Legacy secured.

Sometimes the narrative just has to win. Messi had one of those late-career Messi games. 

For long stretches, you barely noticed him, and he was rarely involved. He spent most of his time strolling around and shielding passing lanes as Vancouver controlled possession. However, there were two decisive moments in the game, and Messi set up both. He was instrumental in the first goal with his shuffle and through ball to Allende. He set up the second with a silly feed. And he provided the pass for the killer third, too. It was his 63rd goal contribution for Miami this season. This was major trophy number 48, and it wasn't the easiest. Vancouver made it tough. But it is the Argentine's prerogative to decide games. And he managed to make that happen yet again.

Football can be so, so cruel. Ocampo has been the model of consistency for the Whitecaps this season, playing almost every game and being just about as solid a full back as MLS can offer. He keeps it tidy, seldom makes mistakes, and offers stability for a well-balanced side. But finals are decided in moments, and Ocampo was on the wrong end of two of them. The obvious slip-up was his ill-timed dart across the box to cover Allende's pass. Instead of cutting it off, he deflected the ball into his own net. He was also slightly culpable on the Miami third, failing to hold the defensive line and allowing Allende to run in behind and seal the game for good. One to forget, on the biggest of stages. 

GettyWINNER: Rodrigo De Paul

He's always been far more than just "Messi's bodyguard." De Paul has far more attacking quality and soccer smarts than he gets credit for. That is partially, of course, because his role is so distilled to the idea of simply protecting Miami's main man. Yet De Paul showed off all sides of his game here. This was a scrappy one, full of hard tackles that didn't get called, and cheeky shoves that did. De Paul was up for both. He kept his composure on the ball, sprayed it around when needed, and, crucially, scored the winning goal.

But more valuable than all of that, perhaps, were the seconds squeezed out of the game in between. He stayed down for a few extra moments after every heavy challenge. He took his time on throw-ins. He picked up – and then miraculously recovered from – a series of injuries over the course of the 90 minutes. De Paul is always the unsung hero. Today felt more like main character energy.

How things can change in a year. This time in 2024, the Whitecaps had fired a popular coach in Vanni Sartini and were in the process of selling the team. This was a broken side dealing with rumors of a potential relocation. Yet the Whitecaps rallied, generated a real energy behind a city that seemed to have forgotten, at times, that it has a soccer team. They made it to multiple finals and the fanbase was reinvigorated once again. Then the club was buoyed by the arrival of a global star in Thomas Muller. 

This is, in fact, a bit cruel. The Whitecaps gave pretty much everything for their city. Canadian soccer still deserves its third MLS club. Yet the team is for sale; their lease at BC Place is up. Vancouver certainly has enough passion to embrace a team. This one just might not be around for much longer. 

In a sentence that would have seemed outrageous last week, three-time All-Star Rafael Devers belted his first home run as a member of the San Francisco Giants against the team he was employed by just six days ago before the trade that sent shockwaves through MLB.

Facing Red Sox righthander Brayan Bello in the bottom of the third inning at Oracle Park on Saturday, Devers took a four-seam fastball down the middle for strike one, then saw the same pitch in almost the exact same location. This time, Devers crushed it 105.5 MPH the other way to left field for a 370-foot home run.

It would have been a home run in 25 out of 30 ballparks, including Devers's former home, Fenway Park. Devers currently has a home run, a double, three RBI and a pair of walks in five games with the Giants.

Sinclair – also an offspinner – struck a vital 50 and then 14 not out, both from No. 7, in a tight eight-run win. He bowled just eight overs, all in Australia’s first innings which sandwiched his batting efforts, but was able to snare Usman Khawaja for 75. Replicating Sinclair’s impact rather than Lyon’s is a far easier task and would favour Jacks.It will be these cues from day-night affairs in Australia, and England’s own learnings from the seven they have played, that will continue to be disseminated among the group over the coming days. The entire top five played in England’s last pink-ball Test – against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui in 2023 – but Jamie Smith, for instance, will be playing his first of any kind.”We’ve spoken with the guys who have played some pink-ball games, and had a look at some of the pink-ball games that have been played in Australia in the past four or five years,” Carse said. His only day-night match happened to be in this country for England Lions against Australia A at Melbourne in January 2020.”On an evening, it does seem to do a little bit more, especially if you have a slightly newer ball, which I’m sure we’ll take into consideration throughout the game. Carragher name-drops Marco Silva as pressure grows on Frank

Thomas Frank should be pleased that his side showed some resilience to complete their comeback against Newcastle United late on in midweek, but it was ultimately another attacking performance to forget. The Lilywhites found themselves relying on Cristian Romero brace to salvage a point as their frontline once again struggled to create.

The pressure is certainly growing on Frank, who is quickly losing the backing of supporters thanks to his pragmatic style. It remains to be seen whether ENIC pull the plug so early into the manager’s tenure, but that didn’t stop Jamie Carragher from suggesting a manager that he’s always seen heading to Spurs.

The Sky Sports pundit and Liverpool legend said: “I actually think he was the one manager Everton should have stuck with. I’ve always seen Silva at Tottenham, I’m not saying Tottenham as in change Thomas Frank put Marco Silva in.

“The point I’m trying to make is not quite go from Fulham to like you know a Liverpool or Manchester City you think going to sort of compete for the league but sort of that sort of level just belong with it trying to get you know Champions League maybe, you know Aston Villa, that type of team that would almost be the next step for him in the Premier League.”

Of course, if Spurs are to make a decison then it should come before the January transfer window, when they could look to sign a defensive addition.

Tottenham eyeing Van Hecke bid

According to TeamTalk, Tottenham are now eyeing a bid to sign Jan Paul Van Hecke in 2026 following the defender’s impressive start to the campaign for Brighton. Like Romero in midweek, Van Hecke netted an unlikely brace for the Seagulls, highlighting his surprising goalscoring threat in a dramatic 4-3 defeat against Aston Villa.

That said, Van Hecke’s set-piece threat is unlikely to be the main reason for Tottenham’s interest. Instead, their focus will be on his defensive prowess – especially as Frank continues to experiment with an occasional back three.

In Romero, Micky van de Ven and Van Hecke, the Lilywhites would suddenly have a solid trio to choose from in a back three. That, in itself, would go a long way towards turning things around for Frank.

Brighton rarely make things easy for buying clubs, however, and the praise of manager Fabian Hurzeler suggests that the Seagulls will be keen to keep hold of their man.

"We're getting a close-up!" O'Neil then exclaimed as the camera focused on Raleigh's backside.

"I don't know if we need that guys. Goodness," Kay continued. "In Seattle they sell No. 29 jerseys with the name Big Dumper on the back."

Serie A giants AC Milan are tracking Arsenal star Gabriel Jesus ahead of a potential January swoop as the forward finally makes a comeback from injury. The Brazil star spent almost a year on the sidelines after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in January this year. Jesus returned to action in the Champions League earlier this week against Club Brugge before appearing in the Premier League on Saturday.

Jesus happy to be back after long injury lay-off

Earlier this week, Jesus finally returned to action for Arsenal after almost a year as he came on as a substitute in the Champions League fixture against Club Brugge. The Brazilian forward played for the final 30 minutes of the match but looked impressive on his return. Following his return to competitive football, Jesus had told Arsenal.com: "In the first three months, I had a lot of doubts in my head, and then I could be more focused on what God wants from me. Everyone was expecting me to score. and obviously, I wanted to score. I had some opportunities, but even with that, I'm so happy and so pleased, because to come back and then to have some touches that I had tonight, and then the way I could move, the way I could keep the ball. So with 11 months of helping myself and then feeling scared to come back different, maybe with some limitations, just to walk outside and then play with the boys, I'm so pleased. I feel more than ready. So, I'm here to say God saved my life."

Mikel Arteta was also pleased to welcome his star striker back as the manager said: "I think he brings something else, and I was really happy to see that. Gabi has a really special quality, which is that he suddenly connects everybody around him, and that’s something that we as a team need, and it will make us better. So happy for him, I think you can see how much we all love him. It's been a very, very difficult and long journey. For 11 months he's been fighting against another very difficult injury and to see him back with that smile, with that energy and with that quality in his first performance with us is something really impressive and we're all delighted for him."

Per , AC Milan have set their sights on the returning Gunners star as they look to sign the forward on loan in the January transfer window. A permanent transfer is out of the question for the Italian giants, who have their own financial constraints, while a temporary move also looks difficult, considering Jesus' current salary. 

The Selecao international presently earns €16 million gross per year at Emiratest Stadium, which is way more than what AC Milan can afford to offer to Jesus. 

While the wages could become a hindrance in the transfer, it is also true that Jesus will remain hungry for more game, with only a few months left for the 2026 World Cup in North America. With Viktor Gyokeres on their side and Mikel Merino's ability to often shine as a makeshift forward, Jesus may decide he needs to move for more opportunities.

Jesus tipped to move out of Arsenal?

Last month, Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn had suggested that Gabriel Martinelli and Jesus, along with Ben White and Ethan Nwaneri, should be allowed to leave Arsenal in January. Speaking in association with , GOAL, when asked if Martinelli and Jesus will move on, the club icon said: “I don’t personally think they will leave. Because, for me, what you want to see from a squad on matchday is a starting XI but then look at the bench when things are not as comfortable as you want them to be, what player can come on and make an impact – whether that is defensively or an attacking option? I would suggest that Mikel Arteta, for the rest of this season with the games that we have got, will want everybody back fit. Jesus is a terrific option to have. I don’t see any of our players leaving in January. Maybe next season, but I don’t see anybody leaving in January.”
