Recent reports have pointed towards Jurgen Klopp's shock return to football management, with Real Madrid desperate to sign the ex-Liverpool boss — currently Global Head of Football at Red Bull — to replace the under-fire Carlo Ancelotti. Klopp's words when he announced his departure from Liverpool last year could further fuel the speculation regarding a potential managerial role at Santiago Bernabeu next season.

While announcing that the 2023-24 season would be his final one at Anfield last January, Klopp left the door open to a return to management, but promised that he would never manage another club in England, leading to speculation that the German manager could be tempted to join Los Blancos.

"I will not manage a club or a country at least for a year, that’s not possible, I cannot do that and I don’t want to. That’s all. What I know definitely – I will never, ever manage a different club in England than Liverpool, 100 per cent. That’s not possible."

Many believe that Ancelotti could be enjoying his final few months as Real Madrid manager. His future has come under risk after a string of poor results; the Merengues have conceded nine goals over two defeats against Barcelona, while they also succumbed to a 3-0 defeat in the quarter-final first leg of the Champions League against Arsenal last week.

Amidst all the uncertainty regarding Ancelotti's future, Real Madrid have been constantly linked with Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso, who is heavily tipped to take over from Ancelotti either this summer or the next one.

Brook and Duckett sparkle before Wood fires England to big win

Record fourth-wicket stand sets up unassailable total as Pakistan implode in chase

Alan Gardner23-Sep-2022England landed all the telling blows in another pulsating contest in Karachi, riding on the back of a century stand between Harry Brook and Ben Duckett before a searing return to national colours from Mark Wood helped torpedo the Pakistan reply. A total of 221 for 3 was the highest conceded by Pakistan in T20Is, the 63-run margin of defeat their heaviest against England.Brook and Duckett both notched maiden T20I fifties during a record fourth-wicket stand for England in the format, the pair belying their relative inexperience at this level to add 139 from just 69 deliveries. Brook’s form was particularly scintillating, as he carved eight fours and five sixes to finish not out on 81 from just 35 deliveries – a strike rate of 231.42. Duckett produced his best innings in an England shirt with an unbeaten 70 from 42.Having reeled in 200 while barely breaking sweat the night before, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan were the key men for Pakistan as they attempted what would have been a record chase. But Wood and Reece Topley, two of England’s three changes to the XI, removed both openers for single-figure scores and Pakistan quickly careened out of contention at 28 for 4 in the final over of the powerplay.Shan Masood and Khushdil Shah put on 62 for the fifth wicket to prevent the scoreline becoming a rout, Masood going on to record a maiden T20I half-century of his own, but Adil Rashid struck twice and Wood finished with 3 for 24 as England regained the series lead with a thumping win.Wood fires the defence
Although England piled up the runs after being inserted, another raucous crowd watched on expectantly as Babar and Rizwan walked out together, barely 24 hours on from the record, unbroken 203-run opening stand that had levelled the series. But hopes of an encore were quickly scotched, as England’s reshaped attack ripped out the cream of Pakistan’s batting. The first cut was the deepest, as Wood immediately set about cranking up the pace to levels none of his compatriots can match. His fourth delivery was back of a length in the channel outside off, encouraging Babar to open up the shoulders – but with 147kph/91mph of heat on the ball, Pakistan’s batting bellwether could only manage a thick edge that soared down to deep third, where Topley calmly held a head-high catch. Silence descended on the National Stadium as Babar trudged off.Mark Wood bowled with extreme pace on his return to action•Getty ImagesTopley then removed Rizwan in the next over with a slower delivery that pinged leg stump, and Wood had his second a ball later as Haider Ali spliced another rocket to square leg. Wood’s last senior appearance in any format came during the Antigua Test in March, his summer wrecked by two elbow operations; but any doubts that he could still be a potent weapon at the T20 World Cup were immediately dispelled by a spell in which he was clocked at 156.2kph/97mph, the value of his extra gas rarely more explicit.England’s new-look engine room
Coming into this series, it was far certain that both Brook and Duckett would play in the middle order. The latter is not in England’s T20 World Cup squad and hadn’t been capped in any format since 2019, while Brook benefited from the absence of Liam Livingstone and Ben Stokes in Pakistan to add to his four previous appearances. Both showed glimpses of what they were capable of in the first two T20Is, before kicking things up a notch here. They came together in the ninth over, after Will Jacks’ sparky debut innings of 40 off 22 ended with a catch in the deep. As in the second T20I, Duckett stuck closely to his brief of trying to take down spin during the middle overs, bringing out an assortment of sweeps and paddles – both orthodox and reverse – while Brook relied on a more textbook technique to produce an array of eye-catching shots. His fifth and seventh balls, bowled by Usman Qadir, were sent over the ropes, the first straight down the ground and the next over extra cover as the bowler tossed it up wide of the stumps. Haris Rauf, a sometime team-mate with Yorkshire and Lahore Qalanders, for whom Brook scored the second-fastest PSL hundred earlier this year, was hooked brusquely for six, as England began to track at ten an over with plenty of time left in the innings. Shahnawaz Dahani’s third over went for 16 as Brook raced to a 24-ball fifty.Duckett notched his own half-century, from 31 balls, in the next and Rauf briefly stopped Brook in his tracks with a bouncer that lodged in the grille of his helmet. But they were off again, as Duckett swatted Mohammad Hasnain over deep square leg and Brook showcased both power and precision, drilling Dahani for a straight six and then deftly steering a follow-up yorker wide of the keeper. Dahani finished with 0 for 62, the second most-expensive analysis by a Pakistan bowler in T20Is.Masood massages the margin
With Babar and Rizwan ensconced at the top of the order, Masood has had to take his chance wherever he can find a space. The 32-year-old made 7 off 7 batting at No. 4 on debut in the first T20I, and appeared ill-suited to the demands of trying to nail down a spot in Pakistan’s ever-changing middle-order roster, where the openers’ methodical run-plundering often requires those who come after to tee off straight away.It may have come in a lost cause, but Masood’s performance on this occasion suggested he has the wherewithal to survive. He played freely against England’s two spinners, twice dumping Rashid over the ropes and going to a 28-ball fifty with another six off Moeen Ali, outscoring both of his partners, Khushdil and Mohammad Nawaz, during consecutive 50-plus stands that lifted Pakistan away from ignominy. And perhaps his canniest move was making sure to only face three balls from Wood.

West Ham thinking about signing ÂŁ20m Premier League ace alongside Brobbey

West Ham United are now thinking about signing a Premier League player alongside their move for Brian Brobbey, with the Hammers widely believed to be in serious talks over a deal for the latter as Graham Potter looks to reinforce his attacking options.

West Ham in negotiations to sign Brian Brobbey on loan

On Friday morning, a piece in De Telegraaf shared news of West Ham’s “serious” attempt to sign Brobbey on loan with an obligation to buy.

The Netherlands international has emerged as a top target for West Ham, despite previous reports that their most likely striker signing of the window was RB Leipzig ace Andre Silva (ExWHUemployee), but Potter’s side were also believed to be looking at alternatives to the 29-year-old.

“We had continued our talks with Andre Silva over a loan move to the summer,” said club insider Ex (via West Ham Way).

“The loan deal would potentially have an option at the end of it to make the deal permanent. Talks will continue today but at the moment other options are being considered as well. As I’ve been saying for a while now, I think this is the easiest deal to complete, and one we may chose to do as a temporary measure that could turn out to be a bargain.”

One of those alternatives in Brobbey is now being really coveted by West Ham, with De Telegraaf reporter Mike Verweij writing that the east Londoners have made a proposal to sign him on loan with an obligation to buy outright after contacting both the player and Ajax.

Fabrizio Romano backs West Ham’s strong interest in signing Brobbey, claiming that Tottenham have backed out of the race and Potter’s side are very keen on snapping up the 22-year-old.

However, Brobbey isn’t their only potential January incoming, as West Ham want a new defender to.

West Ham considering January deal for Adam Webster

According to reliable journalist Jack Rosser, formerly of The Evening Standard, Brighton’s Adam Webster is now a target for the Irons at centre-back.

Indeed, it is believed that West Ham are considering a January move for Webster, who cost the Seagulls ÂŁ20 million to sign from Bristol City. It remains to be seen what Fabian Hurzeler’s side would demand for the Englishman, but he has just 18 months remaining on his deal.

Webster could be a solid option for Potter, who worked with the 30-year-old during their time together at the Amex, but it is worth noting that he’s barely featured this season due to thigh problems.

Sheffield Wednesday eye defender who’ll be free 72 hours before deadline

Sheffield Wednesday are “keen to get a deal done” for the January signing of a player who has impressed Danny Rohl, according to reliable journalist Joe Crann.

Latest Sheffield Wednesday news

Owl supporters are continuing to dream big this season, staying in touch with those battling for a place in the Championship playoffs. So often in recent years, the club have either been in League 1 or battling to stay in the second tier, but things feel more promising this time around.

Rohl is doing an excellent job, guiding Wednesday to 10th place in the table and only three points adrift of the playoff places, and while still arguably outsiders to finish in the top six, they do feel in the mix currently.

New signings will only aid the Owls in their quest to return to the Premier League for the first time since 2000, and they have been linked with fresh faces in the current transfer window. Former Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong is one such figure, with the 32-year-old now playing for Vancouver Whitecaps in Canada.

Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest striker Emmanuel Dennis has also been seen as an option, having played no part in a brilliant season for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side. A loan move to Hillsborough has been mooted for the 27-year-old.

Sheffield Wednesday want to seal free left-back signing

According to a new update from The Star‘s Crann on X, Sheffield Wednesday are pushing to sign Vissel Kobe left-back Ryo Hatsuse in the January transfer window, having caught the eye of Rohl during a spell training with his side.

“Understand SWFC are keen to get a deal done to make Ryo Hatsuse an Owl once his Vissel Kobe deal expires – the Japanese defender has impressed Danny Rohl. All parties eager to wrap things up, but other clubs also interested. He’s no longer training.”

With the Japanese season starting and ending at different times of the year to the norm in European football, Hatsuse’s contract will expire on January 31st, just 72 hours before the closure of the January transfer window.

Hatsuse may not be a household name, but the fact that Rohl likes him immediately suggests that he could be a good option for Wednesday, seemingly doing enough to convince him in training in a short space of time.

The 27-year-old is a former Japan Under-21 international, winning 12 caps at that level, and he has also represented his country at Under-20 and Under-19 level, highlighting his pedigree during his younger days.

With Marvin Johnson now well into his 30s, Rohl could see Hatsuse as a longer-term option at left-back or left wing-back, providing more competition for Max Lowe in the process.

The fact that his contract expires within the window is an added bonus for Wednesday, allowing them to sign him on a free transfer and also allowing a short window to go for other signings if this one falls through.

Craig Overton tightens Somerset's grip in bid for crucial victory

Will Young resists with 85 but hosts take control to inch away from bottom two

ECB Reporters Network21-Sep-2022Craig Overton marked his return to LV= County Championship cricket with four wickets as Somerset took control on the second day of the match with Northamptonshire at Taunton.Having extended their first-innings total from an overnight 271 for four to 389 all out, the hosts reduced their opponents to 184 for six in reply, Overton ending the day with four for 25 from 13 overs.Off-spinner Rob Keogh had claimed four for 99 and seamer Jack White three for 84 in a carefully compiled Somerset innings, which occupied 137.3 overs. But both were upstaged by Overton, who worked up good pace from the Marcus Trescothick Pavilion End, having missed the last two Championship matches through international duty and then a back problem. Will Young kept Northamptonshire in the game with a defiant 85, but found little support of the rest of his team’s top six, who mustered just 37 between them.Somerset began the day cautiously at the Cooper Associates County Ground, showing no inclination to chase the 79 runs in 14 overs that would have yielded four batting points.Lewis Goldsworthy had not added to his overnight 22 in 6.4 overs when edging a defensive shot to first slip off White with the total on 284.James Rew finally broke loose with successive boundaries off White to bring up the 300 and a third bonus point in the 107th over. The young wicketkeeper fell lbw to Tom Taylor on 32 and Overton also departed in the morning session, stumped advancing down the pitch to Keogh, having made 13.At lunch, Somerset were 362 for seven, having scored 91 in 31 overs. Lewis Gregory was 27 not out and added five after the interval before being pinned leg before on the back foot by White.Sajid Khan and last man Kasey Aldridge perished in the bid to accelerate, skying shots to White and Josh Cobb respectively, who both held testing catches. The Northants reply had reached 16 when Emilio Gay feathered a catch to Rew off Josh Davey, who quickly followed up by having Luke Procter pouched by Overton at second slip.Davey almost claimed a third wicket when Cobb chipped a catch to mid-on, but had overstepped and was called for a no-ball.Overton had not been given the new ball, but his introduction to the attack soon reaped dividends as Cobb fended a sharply rising delivery to short leg to make in 29 for three. The visitors were in a hole eight runs later when Keogh was caught behind off Overton trying to withdraw his bat.But Young held firm and was unbeaten on 40 at tea, which was taken at 73 for four. The Northamptonshire skipper moved to an excellent fifty, off 88 balls, with 10 fours.Overton had resumed the attack at the start of the final session and produced a quick delivery to have Ricardo Vasconcelos, on 17, caught behind by Rew reaching above his head. The England seamer, perhaps still mindful of his recent back spasms, was then immediately replaced by the expensive Aldridge, whose first seven overs, in two spells, went for 42 runs.Somerset’s grip appeared to be loosening as Saif Zaib helped Young add 63 for the sixth wicket. But back came Overton for a third spell to claim another key scalp.Having faced 153 balls and extended his boundary count to 15, Young edged a defensive push to second slip where Tom Abell held a comfortable catch. At 158 for six, Northants still needed 82 to avoid the prospect of following on. Zaib survived a testing examination from Overton to be unbeaten on 27 at the close, with Taylor 19 not out in a stand worth 26.

Chivas icon RamĂłn Morales has voiced his worries regarding the performance and direction of Guadalajara – a team he once captained and helped lead to glory.

Morales, known for his leadership and deep connection with the club, hopes to see – currently managed by Gerardo Espinoza, though it's unlikely he'll remain in charge next season – return to the top tier of Mexican football.

“Because of its history and everything it represents, Chivas should always be competing, fighting for the top spots,” Morales told TUDN. “Being in the Liguilla. The fact that the team is now fighting just to get into a Play-In – that’s not what the fans want. It leaves them sad, angry, or disappointed.”

Chivas sit just outside the top 10 with one match left to play in the Clausura 2025 regular season – a high-stakes showdown against Atlas, a team that has beaten them in their last two encounters. The outcome will decide whether Chivas sneaks into the postseason or faces another year of questions and frustration.

Matchday 17 of the Clausura 2025 still carries major implications. While Toluca has already secured the top seed, several clubs are aiming to either solidify their place in the Final Phase or improve their seeding.

Nine of the 10 postseason spots have been secured. The final one will be decided this weekend between Chivas and Pumas.

Chivas will face Atlas at Estadio Jalisco, but their fate isn’t in their control – they’ll need Pumas to drop points when they visit Tigres.

Both matches will be played simultaneously on Saturday, with the final playoff spot hanging in the balance.

Fakhar 109, Babar 74 help Pakistan clinch run-fest

Vikramjit, Cooper, and Edwards brought the hosts close, but could not take them over the line

Danyal Rasool16-Aug-2022
Pakistan were nearly made to pay for leaving a few runs out there in the first innings, but sensational death bowling from their three pacers bailed out the batters and saw the visitors close out a 16-run win over Netherlands. The foundation for the victory was laid by a 168-run partnership between Fakhar Zaman, who stroked a majestic 109, and Babar Azam, who chipped in with 74.Netherlands started their pursuit of 315 brightly but were always hampered by regular loss of wickets. Half-centuries from Vikramjit Singh and Tom Cooper kept them in the hunt, and Scott Edwards’ fourth successive fifty ensured Pakistan were made to sweat. But with the skipper not finding support from the other end, Pakistan’s bowling was a touch too good for the home side to match an ever-ballooning asking rate. While Pakistan had started off sedately, Netherlands knew any chance of victory would involve significant risk-taking. They brushed aside the early losses of Max O’Dowd and Wesley Barresi – the latter a picture-perfect dismissal as he left a Rauf inswinger that clattered into off stump. Cooper injected impetus into the innings as Vikramjit anchored, but before long, both began to take the attack to the bowlers.Vikramjit Singh, along with Tom Cooper, showed resistance after Netherland lost early wickets•PCBPakistan found success whenever they pitched it up full, with debutant Naseem Shah the pick of the lot. He was the one who went full most frequently, always threatening – and often hitting – the pads and keeping lbw in the game. But as the Cooper-Vimkramjit partnership grew, Netherlands found themselves well ahead of where Pakistan were at the corresponding stage. Significantly outnumbered by Pakistani fans, a small pocket of Dutch supporters began to dream in Rotterdam. But just as the stand approached a hundred, Rauf undid Cooper with a perfectly disguised slower ball which the batter top-edged to Babar at mid-off. With Vikramjit Singh miscuing a sweep soon after, the Netherlands found themselves having to rebuild. With a 55-run sixth wicket stand, they did just that, with in-form batter Edwards continuing where he left off against England. A six and a four off Nawaz had the Netherlands believing once more, and it was followed up by successive boundaries against Shadab Khan. But Pakistan had the pace trio of Wasim, Naseem and Rauf with overs up their sleeves, and the raw pace and high skill began to demonstrate the gulf between the two sides. Where Pakistan had been allowed to score 88 in the final eight, Netherlands found getting the fast bowlers away significantly harder. Logan van Beek gave Edwards stellar support, but when he holed out against Rauf, it was essentially Edwards against Pakistan. Despite the captain’s quality, that, in the end, was too hot to handle.Earlier, on what looked a particularly tempting surface to bat on – both Babar and Scott Edwards said they fancied setting a target – Pakistan won the toss and went in first. They began excessively cautiously, scoring just three runs in the first four overs, and slipped to 10 for 1 when an off-colour Imam-ul-Haq was trapped in front by Vivian Kingma.Babar Azam joined Fakhar Zaman to add 168 runs in 170 balls•PCBBabar’s arrival settled some nerves, though he, too found it difficult to start, with Bas de Leede, by some distance the best Dutch bowler on the day, beating the outside edge on a couple of occasions. Once set, however, three fours in the tenth over gently tugged the momentum towards Pakistan.Netherlands looked particularly toothless in the middle overs – though in fairness, most bowling sides do against Pakistan’s top three. Fakhar displayed ominous rhythm, and when he heaved Kingma over the on side for the game’s first six in the 26th over, only for Babar to follow it up with one in the next over, the huge score Pakistan were tipped to post looked a formality. That would change when an ill-timed hit from Babar over mid-off off Logan van Beek found Tom Cooper, the Pakistan captain falling 26 short of another hundred. Fakhar made no mistake in getting his in the next over, smashing Aryan Dutt for three fours, only for an ill-judged bit of running to send him back for 109. With Pakistan’s shaky middle order exposed, de Leede and Tim Pringle were able to establish a modicum of control. But Shadab had other ideas for the death. Capitalising on Netherlands’ sloppiness both with ball and in the field, he smashed four fours and a pair of sixes en route an unbeaten 28-ball 48 as Pakistan struck 88 off the last eight overs. Only de Leede was spared punishment, as the bowler’s unrelenting accuracy and control was difficult to get away from even in the 50th over, in which Pakistan squeezed out just seven. It gave them just about a good enough score to keep the home side at bay, though in the remaining two games, the bowlers might ask the batters to leave them a little more breathing room.

Basic points

Starting simple on how many points a squad member would earn your team for getting on the pitch.

Well, under 60 minutes is 1 point, whereas over an hour brings in 2 points. Easy, right?

Defensive points

As they say, a winning team is built on a solid foundation at the back, and goalkeepers and defenders can bring in plenty of points across the campaign.

Should a shot-stopper or defender keep a clean sheet, that would result in 4 points, whereas midfielders also get 1 point for a clean sheet. Also, for every three shots saved by a goalkeeper, that would bring in 1 more point, and if they save a penalty, that’s 5 points.

Attacking points

Essentially, goals and assists should play a big part in your thinking when picking your squad and making transfers.

For every goal your striker scores, you’ll collect 4 points. If your midfielder bags, 5 points, and if a defender scores a rare goal, 6 points. If somehow your goalkeeper scores, that would bring in a whopping 10 points.

Assists are a simple 3 points, no matter which member of your squad gets one. Players will also be rewarded with an assist should they win a free kick or penalty that is subsequently scored.

Every Premier League club's penalty-taker

Here’s who you can expect to be lining up from 12 yards.

ByBarney Lane Nov 15, 2024 Losing points in FPL

You can also lose points in FPL on the pitch – and for plenty of things, too. The costliest deduction is for a red card, which will see 3 points taken off your score, whereas a yellow card will result in a 1-point deduction.

If any of your players score an own goal or miss a penalty, that will see a -2 on your record, and for every two goals conceded by a goalkeeper or defender, be prepared for a -1.

Bonus points

If all those points weren’t enough, FPL also has a bonus points system in place, which rewards the three standout performers from each Premier League fixture.

The highest-scoring player will be awarded 3 points, 2 to the second-best and 1 to the third.

Players with the most FPL bonus points this season

Bonus points are a key feature in FPL, but which players are the best at picking them up?

ByBarney Lane Nov 1, 2024 Bench points

Unfortunately, if you benched a player who scored a hat-trick and all 11 of your starting lineup featured in some capacity, there is no way to get those points on the pitch – unless you’ve used the Bench Boost chip, of course.

However, if a player(s) from your starting XI is injured and didn’t play, the substitute(s) you selected will come on and score you points.

Assistant Manager chip

The new Assistant Manager chip allows FPL bosses to use the Premier League’s managers to get them more points. The chip can be activated once from 1st February and will come on board as your ‘assistant’ manager, scoring points for three successive games. However, they will come at a cost, with assistant managers ranged between ÂŁ0.5 and ÂŁ1.5m.

But how do the likes of Arteta, Guardiola and Slot score points? Well, they will earn 6 points for a win, 3 points for a draw, 2 points for a clean sheet and 1 point for every goal scored by that team.

There is also a tempting bonus on offer. If your chosen manager beats a team ranked five places higher in the Premier League table, you will get a bonus 10 points, rewarding those who are backing the managers outside the European places.

A summer move is highly unlikely. Saliba is under contract until 2027, and Arsenal will probably pursue a renewal before the 25/26 season. It is believed Madrid will make a bid in 2026, or will pursue a free transfer if the centre back doesn't put pen to paper in North London.

Real Madrid have already shipped 64 goals this term, 14 more than they conceded in the entirety of the 23/24 season.
